6-7절, 6하나님이 이르시되 물 가운데에 궁창이 있어 물과 물로 나뉘라 하시고 And God said, Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it distinguish between the waters in the waters. 7하나님이 궁창을 만드사 궁창 아래의 물과 궁창 위의 물로 나뉘게 하시니 그대로 되니라 And God made the expanse, and made a distinction between the waters which were under the expanse, and the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so.

‘땅을 펼치며 하늘을 펴는’(To spread out the earth and stretch out the heavens)이라는 표현은 사람의 거듭남을 다룰 때, 선지서에서 흔히 말하는 일종의 관용적 표현입니다. 이사야입니다. To “spread out the earth and stretch out the heavens,” is a common form of speaking with the prophets, when treating of the regeneration of man. As in Isaiah:

 

네 구속자요 모태에서 너를 지은 나 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 나는 만물을 지은 여호와라 홀로 하늘을 폈으며 나와 함께 한 자 없이 땅을 펼쳤고 (사44:24) Thus saith Jehovah thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb; I am Jehovah that maketh all things, that stretcheth forth the heavens alone, that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself. (Isa. 44:24)

 

그리고 다시, 주의 오심(the advent of the Lord)을 드러내어 말하는 데를 보면, And again, where the advent of the Lord is openly spoken of:

 

상한 갈대를 꺾지 아니하며 꺼져가는 등불을 끄지 아니하고 진실로 정의를 시행할 것이며 (사42:3) A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench; he shall bring forth judgment unto truth; (Isa. 42:3)

 

즉, 주님은 사람들의 거짓을 멈추시지도, 탐욕을 끄지도 않으시고 대신, 그것들을 진리와 선 쪽으로 구부리십니다. 그래서 이어지는 말씀이, that is, he does not break fallacies, nor quench cupidities, but bends them to what is true and good; and therefore it follows:

 

하늘을 창조하여 펴시고 땅과 그 소산을 내시며 땅 위의 백성에게 호흡을 주시며 땅에 행하는 자에게 영을 주시는 하나님 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 (사42:5) Jehovah God createth the heavens, and stretcheth them out; he spreadeth out the earth, and the productions thereof; he giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein. (Isa. 42:5)
