저는 신체적 감각에 있어 어떤 무감각 상태로 가라앉았고, 그래서 거의 죽어가는 사람의 상태가 되었지만, 그러나 저의 내적 생명(interior life)은 손상되지 않았고, 생각하는 능력과 생명을 위한 충분한 호흡은 유지할 수 있었으며, 마침내 어떤 암묵적 호흡(a tacit breathing) 가운데 있을 수 있었는데요, 이는 저로 하여금 죽은 사람들에게 무슨 일이 일어나며, 어떻게 깨어나는지를 지각하고 기억할 수 있도록 하시기 위해서였습니다. I was reduced into a state of insensibility as to the bodily senses, thus almost into the state of dying persons, retaining however my interior life unimpaired, attended with the power of thinking, and with sufficient breathing for life, and finally with a tacit breathing, that I might perceive and remember what happens to those who have died and are being resuscitated.
