11-13절, 11이르시되 누가 너의 벗었음을 네게 알렸느냐 내가 네게 먹지 말라 명한 그 나무 열매를 네가 먹었느냐 12아담이 이르되 하나님이 주셔서 나와 함께 있게 하신 여자 그가 그 나무 열매를 내게 주므로 내가 먹었나이다 13여호와 하나님이 여자에게 이르시되 네가 어찌하여 이렇게 하였느냐 여자가 이르되 뱀이 나를 꾀므로 내가 먹었나이다 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And Jehovah God said unto the woman, Why hast thou done this? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

세상 학문과 지식을 가지고 신앙의 신비들을 자세히 들여다보겠다고 하는 건 마치 낙타가 바늘구멍을 통과하겠다는 것만큼이나, 그리고 갈비뼈 하나로 가슴과 심장의 극히 미세한 근육들을 움직이겠다는 것만큼이나 불가능한 일입니다. To explore the mysteries of faith by means of memory-knowledges is as impossible as it is for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, or for a rib to govern the finest fibrils of the chest and of the heart.

 

다시 너희에게 말하노니 낙타가 바늘귀로 들어가는 것이 부자가 하나님의 나라에 들어가는 것보다 쉬우니라 하시니 (마19:24)

 

거칠고 투박한 것, 네, 정말 거칠고 투박하지요! 영적, 천적인 것에 비하면 우리의 감각과 세상 학문, 과학 지식이라는 건 말입니다. So gross, yea, much more so, is that which pertains to our senses and memory-knowledge relatively to what is spiritual and celestial.

 

※ 주님의 허락으로 스베덴보리 57세 때 시작, 죽을 때까지 27년간 계속된 영계 체험을 통해서 영들과 천사들, 그리고 주님의 그 영광의 지혜와 비밀들에 대하여 알게 된 그로서는 그에 비해 이 세상 지혜와 지식, 학문적 성과라는 것들이 얼마나 초라하고 하등한 것인지가 아주 생생하게 대비되었던 것 같습니다.

 

자연의 셀 수 없이 많은 비밀을 철저히 조사하겠다고 하는 사람은 사실은 거의 단 하나도 발견하기 어렵고, 또 잘 알려진 대로, 조사하는 중에 그만 오류에 빠지곤 하는데요, 영적, 천적 삶 가운데 숨겨진 진리들을 조사하는 경우는 훨씬 더합니다. 그런 삶에는 자연적으로는 볼 수도 없는 것 하나 안에도 얼마나 많은 무수한 신비들이 존재하는지 모릅니다! He who would investigate the hidden things of nature, which are innumerable, discovers scarcely one, and while investigating them falls into errors, as is well known. How much more likely is this to be the case while investigating the hidden truths of spiritual and celestial life, where myriads of mysteries exist for one that is invisible in nature!

 

[2] 한 가지 예를 들어 살펴보면은, 사람은 스스로는 악을 행하는 것 밖에는, 그리고 주님으로부터는 등을 돌리는 것 밖에는 할 수 있는 게 없습니다. 하지만 사람이 그러는 게 아니라 그에게 와 있는 악한 영들이 그러는 것이며, 악한 영들 역시 그들 자신이 그러는 게 아니라 그들이 그동안 그걸로 자신의 오운(own)을 만들어 온 악 자체가 그러는 겁니다. 영적 실상이 이런데도, 사람은 이런 걸 모르고 자기 의지로 악을 행하며, 주님으로부터 돌아서고, 악과 거짓 가운데 있습니다. 그런데도 그는 자기가 오직 주님으로만 말미암아 산다는 걸 모르면서 삽니다. 또 한편으로, 사람은 혼자서는 선을 행할 수도, 주님을 향할 수도 없고, 오직 천사들로 말미암아 합니다. 그리고 이 역시 천사들이 하는 게 아니라 사실은 주님 홀로 하시는 건데요, 그러면서도 사람은 마치 자기가 하는 것처럼 선을 행하고, 주님을 향하는 걸 할 수 있습니다. 이런 사실들은 우리가 가진 감각이나 세상 학문과 지식, 철학 같은 걸로는 결코 이해할 수 없습니다. 이런 걸 가지고 누구더러 컨설팅을 좀 해달라 하면, 이 모든 게 사실임에도 불구, 모조리 부정될 겁니다. 모든 게 다 그렇듯 말입니다. As an illustration take this single example: of himself man cannot but do what is evil, and turn away from the Lord. Yet man does not do these things, but the evil spirits who are with him. Nor do these evil spirits do them, but the evil itself which they have made their own. Nevertheless man does evil and turns himself away from the Lord, and is in fault; and yet he lives only from the Lord. So on the other hand, of himself man cannot possibly do what is good, and turn to the Lord, but this is done by the angels. Nor can the angels do it, but the Lord alone. And yet man is able as of himself to do what is good, and to turn himself to the Lord. These facts can never be apprehended by our senses, memory-knowledge, and philosophy, but if these are consulted will be denied in spite of their truth. And it is the same all through.

 

[3] 지금까지 들으신 내용으로 분명한 사실은, 믿음의 일들을 감각적인 것들과 세상 학문과 지식으로 컨설팅하는 사람들은 필연적으로 자기 자신을 의심과 부인, 곧 깊은 흑암에 빠지게 하며, 그 결과 결국엔 모든 탐욕 가운데 빠지게 한다는 겁니다. 그 이유는 그들이 거짓된 걸 믿고, 거짓된 걸 행하기 때문이며, 또 그들은 영적이고 천적인 것은 존재하지 않으며, 대신 육체와 세상에 속한 것들만 존재한다고 믿기 때문입니다. 이렇게 저들은 자아와 세상에 속한 모든 걸 사랑하며, 이런 식으로 거짓된 것에서 샘처럼 솟아나는 모든 탐욕과 악을 행하는 것입니다. From what has been said it is evident that those who consult sensuous things and memory-knowledges in matters of belief, plunge themselves not only into doubt, but also into denial, that is, into thick darkness, and consequently into all cupidities. For as they believe what is false, they also do what is false. And as they believe that what is spiritual and celestial has no existence, so they believe that there is nothing else but what is of the body and the world. And so they love all that belongs to self and the world, and in this way do cupidities and evils spring from what is false.
