14여호와 하나님이 뱀에게 이르시되 네가 이렇게 하였으니 네가 모든 가축과 들의 모든 짐승보다 더욱 저주를 받아 배로 다니고 살아 있는 동안 흙을 먹을지니라 And Jehovah God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above every beast, and above every wild animal of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life. (창3:14)

242. ‘여호와 하나님이 뱀에게 이르시되’로 상징되는 것은, 자기들의 감각 파트가 바로 (자기들의 추락의) 원인이었음을 그들이 지각하였다는 것입니다. By “Jehovah God said unto the serpent” is signified that they perceived their sensuous part to be the cause [of their fall].

‘네가 모든 가축과 들의 모든 짐승보다 더욱 저주를 받아’가 상징하는 것은, 그들의 감각 파트가 자신을 하늘의 일로부터 고개를 돌려 육체의 일을 향하게 하였고, 결국 저주를 자초하게 하였다는 것입니다. “The serpent cursed above every beast and above every wild animal of the field” signifies that their sensuous part averted itself from that which is heavenly, and turned itself to that which is of the body, and thus cursed itself;

여기 ‘가축’과 ‘들의 짐승’은 앞에서처럼 어펙션들을 상징합니다. the “beast,” and the “wild animal of the field” here signify affections, as before.

‘배로 다니고’가 상징하는 것은, 그들의 감각 파트는 더 이상 하늘의 일들을 올려다 볼 수 없고, 대신 육체와 땅의 일들을 향해서 내려다만 볼 수 있게 되었다는 것입니다. The “serpent going upon its belly” signifies that their sensuous part could no longer look upward to the things of heaven, but only downward, to those of the body and the earth.

‘살아 있는 동안 흙을 먹을지니라’가 상징하는 것은, 그들의 감각 파트는 오직 육체와 땅에 속한 것들로만 살아가는, 다시 말해서, 지옥을 경험하는 그런 것이 되었다는 것입니다. Its “eating dust all the days of its life” signifies that their sensuous part became such that it could not live from anything but that which is of the body and the earth, that is to say, it became infernal.

243. 천적 인간이었던 태고인들에게 있어, 몸과 관련된 감각적인 것들은 그들의 속 사람을 따르고 순종하는 그런 캐릭터들이었고, 심지어 그들은 그런 것에는 아예 관심도 갖지 않았습니다. In the most ancient celestial men the sensuous things of the body were of such a character as to be compliant and subservient to their internal man, and beyond this they did not care for them.

그러나 그들이 자신들을 사랑하기 시작하고나서부터 그들은 감각에 관한 것들을 속사람보다 앞세웠고, 그러더니 그렇게 그것들은 분리되고, 육체가 되었으며, 그렇게 저주 아래 놓이게 되었습니다. But after they had begun to love themselves, they set the things of sense before the internal man, and therefore those things were separated, became corporeal, and so were condemned.

244. ‘여호와 하나님이 뱀에게 이르시되’라는 표현은, 앞서 밝힌 대로, 그들이 자기들의 감각 파트가 자기들의 추락의 원인임을 깨달았다는 상징으로, 여기에 대해서는 뭐, 더 설명할 게 없지 싶습니다. Having before shown that by “Jehovah God speaking to the serpent” is signified their perceiving the sensuous part to be the cause of their fall, no more need be said in regard to these words.

245. ‘네가 모든 가축과 들의 모든 짐승보다 더욱 저주를 받아’가 상징하는 것은, 그들의 감각 파트가 자신을 하늘의 일로부터 고개를 돌려 육체의 일을 향하게 하였고, 결국 저주를 자초하게 하였다라는 것임은 말씀의 속뜻을 보면 명료해질 것입니다. That “he said to the serpent, thou art cursed above every beast, and above every wild animal of the field” signifies that the sensuous part averted itself from that which is heavenly, turned itself to that which is of the body, and thus cursed itself, may be clearly shown from the internal sense of the Word.

여호와 하나님, 곧 주님은 결코 누구를 저주하시는 분이 아닙니다. Jehovah God or the Lord never curses anyone.

주님은 절대로 누구에게 화를 내시거나, 절대로 누구를 시험하시거나, 절대로 누구를 벌하시거나, 절대로, 절대로 누구를 저주하시는 분이 아닙니다. He is never angry with anyone, never leads anyone into temptation, never punishes anyone, and still less does he curse anyone.

이 모든 것은 지옥의 영들로 말미암는 것입니다. 이런 일들은 결코 무슨 자비나 평화, 선한 의도 등에서 나오는 게 아니기 때문입니다. All this is done by the infernal crew, for such things can never proceed from the fountain of mercy, peace, and goodness.

이 말씀을 비롯, 성경의 여러 다른 데들에서 위와 같은 표현들, 곧 여호와 하나님이 얼굴을 돌리시고, 화를 내시며, 벌하시고, 시험하신다고, 뿐만 아니라 죽이시고, 심지어 저주하신다는 표현들이 기록되어 있는 이유는 사람들로 하여금 이 온 우주 안 모든 것을 다스리시고, 모든 것을 정하시는 분, 심지어 악 자체는 물론, 형벌, 시험들까지도 모두 다 다스리시는 분이 바로 주님이심을 믿을 수 있게 하려는 것입니다. The reason of its being said, both here and in other parts of the Word, that Jehovah God not only turns away his face, is angry, punishes, and tempts, but also kills and even curses, is that men may believe that the Lord governs and disposes all and every thing in the universe, even evil itself, punishments, and temptations;

또 그들이 이런 가장 보편적인 생각을 받아들였을 때, 나중에 배울 수 있게 하려는 것인데요, 주님이 어떻게 이 모든 것을 다스리시고 역사하시는지를, 형벌이나 시험 같은 악을 돌이켜 선이 되게 하심으로써 말이지요. and when they have received this most general idea, may afterwards learn how he governs and disposes all things by turning the evil of punishment and of temptation into good.

말씀을 가르칠 때와 배울 때, 이런 가장 보편적인 진리들이 반드시 가장 먼저 나와야 합니다. In teaching and learning the Word, the most general truths must come first;

그리고 이런 이유로, 문자의 뜻이 이런 일들로 가득한 것입니다. and therefore the literal sense is full of such things.
