And unto the man he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake; in great sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.

By the “man hearkening to the voice of his wife” is signified the consent of the man, or rational, by which it also averted or cursed itself, and consequently the whole external man, denoted by “cursed is the ground for thy sake.

To “eat thereof in sorrow” means that the future state of his life would be miserable, and this even to the end of that church, or “all the days of his life.

That the “ground” signifies the external man is evident from what was previously stated concerning “earth,” “ground,” and “field.

사람이 거듭날 때, 그를 가리켜 더 이상 ‘’이라 하지 않고, 대신 ‘지면’이라고 합니다. 천적 씨가 그의 안에 심겼기 때문입니다. When man is regenerate, he is no longer called “earth,” but “ground,” because celestial seed has been implanted in him;

그는 또한 ‘지면’으로 비유되며, 말씀 여러 곳에서 ‘지면’으로 불립니다. he is also compared to “ground” and is called “ground” in various parts of the Word.

The seeds of good and truth are implanted in the external man, that is, in his affection and memory, and not in the internal man, because there is nothing of one’s own in the internal man, but only in the external.

속 사람 안에는 선들과 진리들이 있으며, 이것들이 더 이상 안 보이면, 그 사람은 겉, 혹은 몸이 됩니다. In the internal man are goods and truths, and when these no longer appear to be present, the man is external or corporeal;

겉 사람이 마치 죽은 사람처럼 되는 상황, 가령, 시험들, 불행들, 질병들, 그리고 임종의 때와 같은, 그런 상황이 아니면 밖으로 나오지 않기 때문입니다. they are however stored up in the internal man by the Lord, without the man’s knowledge, as they do not come forth except when the external man as it were dies, as is usually the case during temptations, misfortunes, sicknesses, and at the hour of death.

래셔널은 또한 겉 사람에게 속하며(AC.118), 실상은 속 사람과 겉 사람 사이 일종의 중간역할을 합니다. The rational belongs also to the external man (n. 118), and is in itself a kind of medium between the internal man and the external;

속 사람은 래셔널을 통해 몸과 겉에 작동하기 때문입니다. for the internal man, through the rational, operates on the corporeal external.

But when the rational consents, it separates the external man from the internal, so that the existence of the internal man is no longer known, nor consequently the intelligence and wisdom which are of the internal.

That Jehovah God (that is, the Lord) did not “curse the ground,” or the external man, but that the external man averted or separated itself from the internal, and thus cursed itself, is evident from what was previously shown (n. 245).

That to “eat of the ground in great sorrow” signifies a miserable state of life is evident from what precedes and follows, not to mention that to “eat,” in the internal sense, is to live.

The same is evident also from the fact that such a state of life ensues when evil spirits begin to fight, and the attendant angels to labor.

이런 삶의 상태는 악한 영들이 주도권을 잡기 시작할 때 더욱 비참해집니다. This state of life becomes more miserable when evil spirits begin to obtain the dominion;

그때 그들은 겉 사람을 다스리고, 천사들은 단지 속 사람만 다스리는데, 속 사람 안에는 리메인스가 거의 없어, 천사들은 그 사람을 방어하는데 필요한 것을 거기서 거의 못 가져오기 때문입니다. for they then govern the external man, and the angels only the internal man, of which so little remains that they can scarcely take anything thence with which to defend the man;

죽은 사람들은 이런 비참과 염려에 거의 예민하지 않습니다. 그들이 더 이상 사람이 아니기 때문인데요, 비록 그들이 자신들을 더욱 사람으로 정말로 생각하더라도 말이지요. Dead men are seldom sensible of such misery and anxiety, because they are no longer men, although they think themselves more truly so than others;

그들은 더 이상 영적이고 천적인 것, 그리고 영원한 삶에 관해 짐승들보다 더 아는 게 없으며, 짐승들처럼 땅에 속한 것들을 향해서는 아래를, 세속적인 것들을 향해서는 밖을 바라보기 때문입니다. for they know no more than the brutes of what is spiritual and celestial, and what is eternal life, and like them they look downward to earthly things, or outward to worldly ones;

그들은 자신들의 본성에만 호의를 보이며, 래셔널의 완전한 동의 하에 자신들의 성향과 감각에만 탐닉합니다. they favor only their own, and indulge their inclinations and senses with the entire concurrence of the rational.

Being dead, they sustain no spiritual combat or temptation, and were they exposed to it their life would sink under its weight, and they could thereby curse themselves still more, and precipitate themselves still more deeply into infernal damnation:

이들은 다른 삶, 곧 지옥이지요, 거기서는 무슨 시험이나 불행 때문에 죽음에 이를 위험이 전혀 없지만, 그러나 가장 극심한 고통을 겪게 되는, 그런 삶의 입구에 이를 때까지 이런 삶을 살게 되기 때문에, 바로 이런 상태를 본문에서는, ‘땅은 저주를 받고 너는 수고하여야 그 소산을 먹으리라’로 상징한 것입니다. hence they are spared this until their entrance into the other life, where, being no longer in danger of dying in consequence of any temptation or misery, they endure most grievous sufferings, which likewise are here signified by the ground being cursed, and eating of it in great sorrow.

That “all the days of thy life” signifies the end of the days of the church is evident from the fact that the subject here treated of is not an individual man, but the church and its state.

The end of the days of that church was the time of the flood.
