‘영들의 세계’(The world of spirits)는 천국도 지옥도 아닌, 그 둘 사이 중간 장소(place) 혹은 상태(state)로서, The world of spirits is not heaven, nor is it hell, but it is the intermediate place or state between the two;
이곳은 사람의 사후(死後, after death) 맨 먼저 도착하는 장소 혹은 상태이며, for it is the place that man first enters after death;
이곳에서 적당한 시간 동안 머물다가 그가 세상에서 보낸 삶에 따라 이후 천국으로 들려 올라가거나 지옥으로 내던져지는 그런 곳입니다. and from which after a suitable time he is either raised up into heaven or cast down into hell in accord with his life in the world. (HH.421)

영들의 세계는 천국과 지옥 사이 중간 장소이며, 또한 사람의 사후 중간 상태입니다. The world of spirits is an intermediate place between heaven and hell and also an intermediate state of the man after death.
저는 지옥이 그 밑에, 천국은 그 위에 있는 걸 보고 그곳이 중간 장소임을, 그리고 사람이 거기 있는 한, 그는 아직 천국도 지옥도 아닌 상태임을 보고 그곳이 중간 상태임을 알았습니다. It has been shown to me not only that it is an intermediate place, having the hells below it and the heavens above it, but also that it is in an intermediate state, since so long as man is in it he is not yet either in heaven or in hell.
사람 안에서 선과 진리가 하나 된(conjunction)상태가 바로 그 사람의 천국이며, 사람 안에서 악과 거짓이 하나 된 상태가 바로 그 사람의 지옥입니다. The state of heaven in man is the conjunction of good and truth in him; and the state of hell is the conjunction of evil and falsity in him.
사후 영이 된 상태(a man-spirit)에서 선과 진리가 하나 될 때, 그는 천국으로 가는데요, 방금 말씀드린 대로, 그런 하나 됨이 바로 그의 안에 있는 천국이기 때문이며, 반대로 그 상태에서 악과 거짓이 하나 되는 경우, 이번엔 지옥으로 갑니다. 이런 하나 됨이 바로 그 사람 안에 있는 지옥이기 때문입니다. Whenever good in a man-spirit is conjoined to truth he comes into heaven, because that conjunction, as just said, is heaven in him; but whenever evil in a man-spirit is conjoined with falsity he comes into hell, because that conjunction is hell in him.
이런 하나 됨은 영들의 세계에서 일어나는데, 그때 사람은 중간 상태에 있기 때문입니다. That conjunction is effected in the world of spirits, man then being in an intermediate state.
이런 하나 됨을 이해(the understanding)와 의지(the will)의 하나 됨이라고 해도 되고, 선(good)과 진리(truth)의 하나 됨이라고 해도 됩니다. It is the same thing whether you say the conjunction of the understanding and the will, or the conjunction of good and truth. (HH.422)
