※ 세 천국이 있다

세 천국이 있습니다. 첫 번째 천국은 선한 영들이 지내는 뎁니다. 두 번째는 천사적 영들, 세 번째가 천사들의 천국입니다. 영들, 천사적 영들 및 천사들은 모두 천적, 영적으로 구별됩니다. 천적인 사람들은 사랑을 통해 주님으로부터 신앙을 받은 사람들입니다. 앞에서 다룬 태고교회 사람들처럼 말이지요. 영적인 사람들은 신앙의 지식을 통해 주님으로부터 체어리티를 받은 사람들이며, 자기들이 받은 것을 가지고 행하는 사람들입니다. There are three heavens: the first is the abode of good spirits; the second, of angelic spirits, and the third, of angels. Spirits, angelic spirits, and angels are all distinguished into the celestial and the spiritual. The celestial are those who through love have received faith from the Lord, like the men of the most ancient church treated of above. The spiritual are those who through knowledges of faith have received charity from the Lord, and who act from what they have received.

※ 주님의 천국 말고 또 다른 천국이 있을 것이라 생각하는 악한 영들

악한 영들은 종종 주님의 천국 말고 또 다른 천국이 있을 것이라 생각합니다. 그래서 그들은 주님의 허락으로 자기들이 할 수 있는 한, 어디든 돌아다녀 봅니다. 하지만 결국은 어디서도 무슨 다른 천국을 찾지 못하고는 당혹해하지요. 악한 영들은 주님을 향해 품고 있는 증오 및 지옥의 고통이라는 이 둘로부터 사악함 속으로 돌진, 그런 환상에 사로잡히기 때문입니다. Evil spirits have sometimes supposed that there is another heaven besides that of the Lord, and they have been permitted to seek for it wherever they could, but to their confusion they could never find any other heaven. For evil spirits rush into insanities both from the hatred they bear against the Lord, and from their infernal suffering, and catch at such fantasies.

이 세상에서 저세상으로 건너가는 거의 모든 사람이 지옥은 모두에게 같으며, 천국 또한 그럴 것이라고 생각합니다. 그러나 실제로는 양쪽 모두 무한한 다양성(diversities)과 다양함(varieties)이 있습니다. 어떤 한 사람의 천국도, 그리고 지옥도 다른 사람의 그것과 똑같지 않습니다. 마치 어떤 사람이나, 영, 천사도 다른 사람이나 영, 천사와 똑같은 경우가 없는 것처럼 말입니다. 제가 거기에 똑같거나 동등한 둘이 있다 그저 생각만 했을 뿐인데도 그곳 영들의 세계와 천사들의 천국에 있는 구성원들은 공포에 사로잡혔습니다. 그들은 말하기를, 모든 사람은 각각 수많은 컴포넌트의 하모니로 형성되어 있다고, 그런 게 하모니요, 그런 게 하나 됨이라고, 낙동강 오리알처럼 자기 혼자 툭 튀어나와 스스로 존속하는 것은 불가능하다고, 오직 모든 컴포넌트들의 하모니의 결과로만 존재하는 것이라고 했습니다. 그렇게 천국 모든 소사이어티가 하나를 형성하며, 그렇게 모든 소사이티들이 하나를, 즉 유니버설 천국을 이룹니다. 그리고 이것은 오직 홀로 주님으로부터, 사랑을 통해서 이루어집니다. 어떤 천사가 영들, 곧 일층천 천국 영들의 기쁨을 가장 유니버설한 것으로만 속(屬, genus, ※ 생물 분류 단계) 단위로 세어보았더니 대략 사백일흔여덟(478) 가지 정도가 되었습니다. 이걸 보면, 유니버설 속보다 훨씬 세부적이고, 또 각 속에 속한 종들은 또 얼마나 엄청날까요? Almost all who pass from this world into the other life suppose that hell is the same for everyone, and that heaven is the same for everyone. And yet in both there are endless diversities and varieties, and neither the heaven nor the hell of one person is ever exactly like that of another; just as no man, spirit, or angel is ever exactly like another. When I merely thought of there being two exactly alike or equal, horror was excited in the inhabitants of the world of spirits and of the angelic heaven, and they said that everyone is formed by the harmony of many components, and that such as is the harmony, such is the one, and that it is impossible for anything to subsist that is absolutely a one, but only a one that results from a harmony of component parts. Thus every society in the heavens forms a one, and so do all the societies together, that is, the universal heaven, and this from the Lord alone, through love. A certain angel enumerated the most universal only of the genera of the joys of spirits, that is, of the first heaven, to about four hundred and seventy-eight, from which we may infer how innumerable must be the less universal genera and the species in each genus.

일층천 천국에 이렇게나 많은 기쁨이 있는 걸 보면, 천사적 영들의 천국, 곧 이층천 천국의 행복의 종류는 얼마나 무한할지, 그리고 더욱 천사들의 천국인 삼층천은 또 얼마나 더 그럴까요! And as there are so many in that heaven, how illimitable must be the genera of happinesses in the heaven of angelic spirits, and still more so in the heaven of angels.

최고의 교육을 받은 그들 모두는 말하기를, 천국의 기쁨은 체어리티의 선을 행하는 삶은 좀 부족해도 대신 오직 주님을 찬양하고, 영광 돌리기만 하면 되는 것이며, 이런 게 활발한 삶이라고 했습니다. 그러나 그들이 들은 말은, 주님을 찬양하고 축하하는 것은 액티브 라이프가 의미하는 게 아니라 그런 삶의 효과일 뿐이라는 것, 주님은 찬양은 굳이 필요로 하지 않으시는 대신, 그들이 체어리티의 선 행하는 건 원하신다는 것, 그들이 주님으로부터 받게 될 행복은 이에 비례할 것이라는 그런 내용이었습니다. 그러나 여전히 이들 최고의 교육을 받은 사람들은 이들 체어리티의 선 행함에 관해 무슨 노예 상태라는 생각말고는 아무런 기쁨도 느낄 수 없었습니다. 그러나 천사들은 증언하기를, 그런 삶은 가장 자유로운 삶이며, 말로 표현할 수 없는 행복과 결합하는 것이라고 했습니다. The best instructed of them all said that heavenly joy consists solely in praising and glorifying the Lord, being a life destitute of any doing of the goods of charity, and that this is an active life. But they were told that praising and celebrating the Lord is not such an active life as is meant, but is an effect of that life; for the Lord has no need of praises, but wills that they should do the goods of charity, and that it is according to these that they will receive happiness from the Lord. But still these best instructed persons could form no idea of joy, but of servitude, in doing these goods of charity. But the angels testified that such a life is the freest of all, and that it is conjoined with happiness unutterable.

세상에서 말씀에 관하여 가장 많이 배운 사람이 있었는데, 그가 생각하는 천국의 기쁨이란, 영광의 빛, 곧 태양 광선이 어떤 황금빛 색조로 나타날 때와 같은 그런 빛, 그래서 그로 하여금 천국 기쁨이란 안락한 삶으로 이루어진다 굳게 믿게 하는 그런 것이었습니다. 그가 착오 가운데 있음을 스스로 알 수 있도록 그에게 그런 빛이 비쳤고, 그 빛 가운데서 그는 자기가 말한 대로, 정말 자기가 천국에 있는 듯 무척 즐거워했습니다. 그러나 그는 그 빛 가운데 오래 머무를 수가 없었습니다. 그 빛은 점점 그를 지겹게 했고, 급기야 하나도 기쁘지 않게 되었기 때문입니다. One who in this world had been most learned in regard to the Word, had the idea that heavenly joy consists in being in a glorious light, like that which exists when the solar rays appear of a golden hue, so that he too supposed it to consist in a life of ease. In order that he might know himself to be in error, such a light was granted him, and he, being in the midst of the light, was as delighted as if he were in heaven, as indeed he said. But he could not remain long in it, for it gradually wearied him and became no joy at all.

어떤 영들은 생각하기를, 천국은 안락한 삶, 다른 사람들의 섬김을 받는 그런 삶으로 이루어진다고 말이지요. 그러나 이들은 다음과 같은 말을 듣게 됩니다. 행복의 수단으로 안락하기만 한 그런 행복은 전혀 불가능하다는, 너무나 많은 사람들이 타인의 행복을 지류삼아 자신이 행복하기를 원하기 때문인데, 모든 사람이 그런 걸 원하면 아무도 행복할 수 없을 것이라는 그런 말들입니다. 그런 삶은 활발한 삶이 아닌 게으른 삶이며, 그렇게 사는 사람들은 무기력해질 겁니다. 비록 생각은 그렇게 해도 실제로는 그들 역시 활발한 삶 없이 행복할 수는 없다는 걸 알고 있을 겁니다. 천사의 삶은 쓰임새의 삶 및 체어리티의 선으로 구성됩니다. 천사들은 다음과 같은 일을 하는 것보다 더 큰 행복이 없음을 알고 있는데요, 이를 테면, 세상에서 막 도착한 영들을 가르치고 교육하는 일, 사람들을 섬기며, 악한 영들로 하여금 그 정해진 바운더리를 넘지 못하게 하고, 선으로 사람들을 격려하는 일, 그리고 영원한 삶을 향해 죽은 자를 일으키며, 그때 그 영들이 돌봄이 가능한 영들이면 그들에게 천국을 소개하는 일 등입니다. Some think that heaven consists in a life of ease, in which they are served by others; but they are told that there is no possible happiness in being at rest as a means of happiness, for so everyone would wish to have the happiness of others made tributary to his own happiness; and when everyone wished this, no one would have happiness. Such a life would not be an active life, but an idle one, in which they would grow torpid, and yet they might know that there is no happiness except in an active life. Angelic life consists in use, and in the goods of charity; for the angels know no greater happiness than in teaching and instructing the spirits that arrive from the world; in being of service to men, controlling the evil spirits about them lest they pass the proper bounds, and inspiring the men with good; and in raising up the dead to the life of eternity, and then, if the souls are such as to render it possible, introducing them into heaven.

From all this they perceive more happiness than can possibly be described. Thus are they images of the Lord; thus do they love the neighbor more than themselves; and for this reason heaven is heaven. So that angelic happiness is in use, from use, and according to use, that is, it is according to the goods of love and of charity. When those who have the idea that heavenly joy consists in living at ease, idly breathing in eternal joy, have heard these things, they are given to perceive, in order to shame them, what such a life really is, and they perceive that it is a most sad one, that it is destructive of all joy, and that after a short time they would loathe and nauseate it.

어떤 영들은 천국에 대한 생각을 너무 뭉뚱그려 하는 바람에 천국을 그저 단순히 허락만 있으면 되는 곳으로, 실제로 그곳은 문이 있어 입장 허락만 받으면 들어갈 수 있는 곳이요, 문은 열려 있고, 문지기가 있어 문지기의 허락만 받으면 들어갈 수 있는 그런 곳인 줄 압니다. Some entertain so gross an idea of heaven that they suppose it to be mere admission, in fact that it is a room into which they are admitted through a door, which is opened, and then they are let in by the doorkeepers.

저는 천국과 천국의 기쁨은 가장 큰 자가 되는 걸로 이루어진다고 여긴 영들과 대화한 적이 있습니다. 그들은 그러나 천국에서는 가장 작은 자가 가장 큰 자라는 말을 들었습니다. 가장 작은 자가 가장 큰 행복을 누리며, 결과적으로는 가장 큰 자가 되기 때문인데, 가장 큰 자 되는 것이 가장 행복한 자 되는 게 아니라면 가장 큰 자 된다는 게 대체 뭐란 말인가요? 힘을 가진 자는 힘을, 부유한 자는 부를 추구하는 이유가 바로 이것, 곧 행복입니다. 더 나아가 그들은 듣기를, 천국은 가장 큰 자 되기 위해 가장 작은 자 되는 걸로 이루어지지도 않았다는 것, 그건 실제로는 가장 큰 자 되기를 열망하고, 간절히 원하는 것이기 때문이라는 것, 반대로 천국은 이것, 곧 마음에서 우러나 우리 자신보다 이웃을 더 사랑하는 것, 그들의 행복 증진을 위해 그들에게 봉사하기를 원하는 것, 그리고 이것을 절대 이기적 목적이 아닌, 사랑으로 하는 것 등으로 이루어진 나라라는 말을 들었습니다. I have conversed with spirits who supposed heaven and heavenly joy to consist in being the greatest. But they were told that in heaven he is greatest who is least, because he who would be the least has the greatest happiness, and consequently is the greatest, for what is it to be the greatest except to be the most happy? It is this that the powerful seek by power, and the rich by riches. They were told, further, that heaven does not consist in desiring to be the least in order to be the greatest, for in that case the person is really aspiring and wishing to be the greatest; but that heaven consists in this, that from the heart we wish better for others than for ourselves, and desire to be of service to others in order to promote their happiness, and this for no selfish end, but from love.

A certain spirit, who during his life in the body had possessed authority, retained in the other life the desire to exercise command. But he was told that he was now in another kingdom, which is eternal; that his rule on earth was dead; and that where he was now no one is held in estimation except in accordance with the good and truth, and the mercy of the Lord, in which he is; and further, that it is in that kingdom as it is on earth, where everyone is rated according to his wealth, and his favor with his sovereign; and that there good and truth are wealth, and favor with the sovereign is the Lord’s mercy; and that if he desired to exercise command in any other way, he was a rebel, seeing that he was now in the kingdom of another. On hearing this he was ashamed.

최초의 형제들 (2)

부자 베르나르도는 곧 말씀대로 실천했는데, '재산을 최후의 한 점에 이르기까지 급히 팔아버렸다.' '잔 꽃송이'에는 퀸타발레의 베르나르도는 산 죠르죠 성당의 광장에 서서 양식을 구하려고 모여 오는 가난한 사람들에게 자기의 재산 전부를 나눠 주었다고 했다. 그날 재산 분배를 받으려는 가난한 사람들보다는 자기 재산을 처분하고 있는 베르나르도 편이 더 급하게 서두르는 것 같았다. 베르나르도는 마치 타작 마당에서 곡식 퍼주는 농부처럼 자기 외투자락 밑에서 쉴 새없이 금화를 꺼내서는 원하는 사람에게 손에 잡히는 대로 쥐어 주었다.

식사 후에 프란치스코는 에지디오에게도 자기네와 똑같은 옷을 입히려고 아씨시로 데리고 갔다. 도중에 늙은 거지 여자가 그들에게 달려와 구걸했다. 프란치스코는 곁에 선 에지디오에게 "사랑하는 형제여! 이 불쌍한 노인에게 당신의 멋진 외투를 벗어 드리시오." 했다. 그는 시키는 대로 복종했다. 에지디오는 뒷날 이때 일을 회상하면서 그때 자기가 벗어준 외투가 하늘까지 날아 올라가는 듯이 여겨졌다고 고백했다. 그리고나서 프란치스코가 입혀 준 허술한 수도복을 입었을 때, 그의 행복감은 절정에 이르렀다.

가난한 작은 형제들의 이같은 쾌활한 정신 때문에 초기의 박해에도 불구하고 점점 많은 회개자들이 생겨났다. 프란치스코의 설교보다 그들 형제들의 감동적 생활이 그대로 새로운 종교의 소식으로, 또는 새 복음으로 여겨졌다. 나중에는 새로운 문젯거리로 화제에 오를 정도였다.
