The spiritual are they who in the Word are in various places compared to the stars, and this owing to the knowledges of good and truth which they have; but the celestial are not so compared, because they have not knowledges but perceptions; moreover the stars illumine the night, and the spiritual have a light of night (as from the moon and stars) in comparison with the light of day in which the celestial are. It is perfectly well known in heaven, but not so well in the world of spirits, whence comes the light that is so great, namely, from the Lord; and it is a remarkable fact that the Lord appears in the third heaven to the celestial angels as a sun, and to the spiritual angels as a moon. The very origin of the light is this and this alone. But the angels have light in proportion to what is celestial and spiritual with them, and the quality of this determines the quality of their light. Thus the Lord’s celestial and spiritual manifests itself before their external sight by means of light.

The heat and light in the natural world arise from the sun of the world; but spiritual heat and light, or love and faith, arise from the sun of heaven. The sun of heaven is the Lord; the heat which comes from him as a sun is love, and the light which comes from him as a sun is faith. That the Lord is light is evident from these words in John:

That this signifies natural good and natural truth is evident from the signification of the “sun” as being celestial good (n. 1529, 1530, 2120, 2441, 2495, 3636, 3643, 4060); and from the signification of the “moon” as being spiritual good, or truth (n. 1529, 1530, 2495). The “sun” in the supreme sense signifies the Lord, because he appears as a sun to those in heaven who are in celestial love; and the “moon” also in the supreme sense signifies the Lord, because he appears as a moon to those in heaven who are in spiritual love; all the light in heaven is thence. Therefore the light from the sun there is the celestial of love, or good, and the light from the moon there is the spiritual of love, or truth; in the present passage therefore the “sun” is natural good, and the “moon” natural truth, because they are predicated of Jacob and Leah, as is evident from verse 10, where Jacob says, “Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?” for by Jacob is represented natural good, and by Leah natural truth, as before occasionally shown. The Divine which comes from the Lord is in the supreme sense the Divine in him; but in the relative sense is the Divine from him. The Divine good from him is what is called celestial, and the Divine truth from him is what is called spiritual. When the rational receives these, the good and the truth of the rational are what are signified; but when the natural receives them, the good and truth of the natural are what are signified. Here they are the good and truth of the natural, because they are predicated of Jacob and Leah.

That this signifies the last period, which is called the last judgment is evident from the signification of the “rising of the sun,” when the subject treated of is the times and states of the church. That in the internal sense the times of the day, and also the times of the year, signify the successive states of the church, has been shown before (n. 2323); and that the dawn or morning signifies the Lord’s advent, that is, the approach of his kingdom (n. 2405) so that in the passage before us the rising of the sun, that is, his “going forth upon the earth” signifies the Lord’s presence itself; and this for the reason that both the “sun” and the “east” signify the Lord. (As to the “sun,” see n. 31–32, 1053, 1521, 1529–1531, 2120; as to the “east,” n. 101.)

 

[2] The reason why the Lord’s presence is the same as the last period, which is called the judgment is that his presence separates the good from the evil, and results in the good being elevated into heaven, and the evil casting themselves down into hell; for in the other life the Lord is the sun to the universal heaven (see n. 1053, 1521, 1529–1531), for it is the Divine celestial of his love that so appears before their eyes and actually makes the very light of heaven. Insofar therefore as the inhabitants of the spiritual world are in celestial love, so far are they elevated into that celestial light which is from the Lord; but insofar as they are remote from celestial love, so far do they cast themselves away from this light into infernal darkness.

 

[3] This therefore is the reason why the “rising of the sun,” by which is signified the presence of the Lord, involves both the salvation of the good and the damnation of the evil; and this is why it is now said for the first time that “Lot came to Zoar,” that is, that they who are here represented by Lot were saved; and presently that “Jehovah caused it to rain upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire,” that is, that the evil were damned.

 

[4] To those who are in the evils of the love of self and of the world, that is, to those who are in hatreds against all things of love to the Lord and of charity toward the neighbor, the light of heaven actually appears as thick darkness; on which account it is said in the Word that to such the “sun was blackened”; by which is signified that they rejected everything of love and charity, and received everything that is contrary thereto. As in Ezekiel:

 

7내가 너를 불 끄듯 할 때에 하늘을 가리어 별을 어둡게 하며 해를 구름으로 가리며 달이 빛을 내지 못하게 할 것임이여 8하늘의 모든 밝은 빛을 내가 네 위에서 어둡게 하여 어둠을 네 땅에 베풀리로다 주 여호와의 말씀이니라 (겔32:7-8) When I shall extinguish thee, I will cover the heavens, and make the stars thereof black; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not make her light to shine; all the luminaries of light in the heavens will I make black over thee, and will set darkness upon thy land (Ezek. 32:7–8).

 

Everyone can see that by “covering the heavens,” “blackening the stars,” “covering the sun,” and “blackening the luminaries of heaven,” other things than these are signified.

 

[5] In like manner in Isaiah:

 

하늘의 별들과 별 무리가 그 빛을 내지 아니하며 해가 돋아도 어두우며 달이 그 빛을 비추지 아니할 것이로다 (사13:10) The sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine (Isa. 13:10).

 

And in Joel:

 

2곧 어둡고 캄캄한 날이요 짙은 구름이 덮인 날이라 새벽 빛이 산 꼭대기에 덮인 것과 같으니 이는 많고 강한 백성이 이르렀음이라 이와 같은 것이 옛날에도 없었고 이후에도 대대에 없으리로다, 10그 앞에서 땅이 진동하며 하늘이 떨며 해와 달이 캄캄하며 별들이 빛을 거두도다 (욜2:2, 10) The sun and the moon are blackened, and the stars withdraw their shining (Joel 2:2, 10).

 

It is therefore evident what is signified by the Lord’s words in Matthew, where he is speaking of the last period of the church, which is called the judgment:

 

그 날 환난 후에 즉시 해가 어두워지며 달이 빛을 내지 아니하며 별들이 하늘에서 떨어지며 하늘의 권능들이 흔들리리라 (마24:29) Immediately after the affliction of those days, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven (Matt. 24:29);

 

where by the “sun” is not meant the sun; nor by the “moon,” the moon; nor by the “stars,” the stars; but by the “sun” are signified love and charity; by the “moon,” the faith thence derived; and by the “stars,” the knowledges of good and truth; which are said to be “obscured,” to “lose their light,” and to “fall from heaven,” when there is no longer any acknowledgment of the Lord, nor any love to him, nor any charity toward the neighbor; and when these have become nought, the love of self with its falsities takes possession of the man; for the one thing is a consequence of the other.

 

[6] Hence we read also in John:

 

8넷째 천사가 그 대접을 해에 쏟으매 해가 권세를 받아 불로 사람들을 태우니 9사람들이 크게 태움에 태워진지라 이 재앙들을 행하는 권세를 가지신 하나님의 이름을 비방하며 또 회개하지 아니하고 주께 영광을 돌리지 아니하더라 (계16:8-9) The fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and it was given unto him to scorch men with fire, and men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God (Rev. 16:8–9);

 

where also the last times of the church are treated of, when all love and charity are being extinguished; or, speaking according to the common mode, when there is no longer any faith. The extinction of love and charity is meant by the “pouring out of the vial upon the sun”; so that it was the love of self and its yearnings by which men were then “scorched with fire,” and “scorched with great heat”; and from which came the “blaspheming of the name of God.

 

[7] By the “sun” the ancient church understood nothing else than the Lord and the Divine celestial of his love; and therefore they were accustomed to pray toward the sun rising, while not thinking at all about the sun. But after their posterity had lost this also, together with the rest of their representatives and significatives, they began to worship the sun itself and also the moon; which worship spread to many nations, so much so that they dedicated temples to them, and set up pillars; and because the sun and the moon then took on an opposite signification, they came to signify the love of self and of the world, which are diametrically contrary to heavenly and spiritual love. Hence in the Word by the “worship of the sun and the moon” is meant the worship of self and of the world.

 

[8] As in Moses:

 

또 그리하여 네가 하늘을 향하여 눈을 들어 해와 달과 별들, 하늘 위의 모든 천체 곧 너희의 하나님 여호와께서 천하 만민을 위하여 배정하신 것을 보고 미혹하여 그것에 경배하며 섬기지 말라 (신4:19) Lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the army of the heavens, and thou be driven to bow down unto them, and serve them (Deut. 4:19).

 

3가서 다른 신들을 섬겨 그것에게 절하며 내가 명령하지 아니한 일월성신에게 절한다 하자, 5너는 그 악을 행한 남자나 여자를 네 성문으로 끌어내고 그 남자나 여자를 돌로 쳐죽이되 (신17:3, 5) If he have gone and served other gods, and the sun and the moon, or any of the army of the heavens, which I have not commanded, then thou shalt stone them with stones, and they shall die (Deut. 17:3, 5).

 

Into such idolatry was the ancient worship turned when they no longer believed that anything internal was signified by the rites of the church, but only what was external.

 

[9] In like manner in Jeremiah:

 

1여호와의 말씀이니라 그 때에 사람들이 유다 왕들의 뼈와 그의 지도자들의 뼈와 제사장들의 뼈와 선지자들의 뼈와 예루살렘 주민의 뼈를 그 무덤에서 끌어내어 2그들이 사랑하며 섬기며 뒤따르며 구하며 경배하던 해와 달과 하늘의 뭇 별 아래에서 펼쳐지게 하리니 그 뼈가 거두이거나 묻히지 못하여 지면에서 분토 같을 것이며 (렘8:1-2) At that time shall they spread out the bones of the kings of Judah, of the princes, of the priests, of the prophets, and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, before the sun and the moon, and all the army of the heavens, which they have loved, and which they have served (Jer. 8:1–2).

 

The “sun” here denotes the love of self and its yearnings; their “spreading out the bones” signifies the infernal things that belong to such worshipers.

 

그가 또 애굽 땅 벧세메스의 석상들을 깨뜨리고 애굽 신들의 신당들을 불사르리라 하셨다 할지니라 하시니라 (렘43:13) He shall break the pillars of the house of the sun, which are in the land of Egypt, and the houses of the gods of Egypt shall he burn with fire (Jer. 43:13).

 

The “pillars of the house” denote the worship of self.

That this signifies the time and the state before the consummation is evident from the signification of “the sun.” In the internal sense “the sun” signifies the Lord, and thence it signifies the celestial things which are of love and charity, consequently love itself and charity (spoken of above, n. 30–38, and n. 1053). From this it is evident that the “going down of the sun” denotes the last time of the church, which is called the consummation, when there is no longer any charity. The Lord’s church is also compared to the times of the day; its first period to the rising of the sun, or to the dawn and the morning; its last to the setting of the sun, or to the evening and the shades then prevailing, for the two things are similarly circumstanced. The church is also compared to the times of the year; its first period to the spring, when all things are in bloom; that which is before the last to the autumn, when they begin to become inactive. It is even compared to the metals; its first period is called golden; its last, iron and clay; as in Daniel (2:31–33).

From all this it is evident what is signified by “the going down of the sun,” namely, that it signifies the time and the state before the consummation, seeing that the sun had not yet set. In what follows, the state of the church when the sun has set is treated of, in that there was then thick darkness and the smoke of a furnace, and that a torch of fire passed between the pieces.

It is perfectly well known in heaven, but not so well in the world of spirits, whence comes the light that is so great, namely, from the Lord; and it is a remarkable fact that the Lord appears in the third heaven to the celestial angels as a sun, and to the spiritual angels as a moon. The very origin of the light is this and this alone. But the angels have light in proportion to what is celestial and spiritual with them, and the quality of this determines the quality of their light. Thus the Lord’s celestial and spiritual manifests itself before their external sight by means of light.
