※ ‘아다와 씰라’라는 이름을 가진, ‘라멕의 아내들’이라는 새 교회가 만들어진 배경

19절, 라멕이 두 아내를 맞이하였으니 하나의 이름은 아다요 하나의 이름은 씰라였더라 And Lamech took unto him two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

세월이 흐르며 황폐해진 ‘가인’이라 하는 이단의 경우도 마찬가지였는데요, 이들은 사랑을 시인해 놓고는 사랑 아닌 신앙을 머리 삼으며, 사랑보다 앞세웠습니다. 이 이단에서 유래한 후대의 이단들은 점점 더 곁길로 빠지더니 순서상 여섯 번째인 라멕에 이르러서는 아예 신앙조차 부인했습니다. 상황이 이 지경이 되자 새 빛, 곧 아침이 빛을 발하며, 여기 ‘아다와 씰라’라는 이름을 가진, ‘라멕의 아내들’이라는 새 교회가 만들어졌습니다. 그들을 일컬어 라멕의 아내들이라 하고 있습니다. 라멕이라는 교회는 아무 신앙도 갖고 있지 않았는데도 말입니다. 마치 유대인들의 내적(內的, the internal), 외적(外的, the external) 교회와 같은 경우인데요, 마찬가지로 신앙이라는 게 전혀 없었던 이들 유대인들의 두 교회를, 말씀에 보면 ‘아내들’, 곧 야곱의 두 아내, 레아와 라헬이라 하고 있으며, 거기서 레아는 외적 교회, 라헬은 내적 교회를 말합니다. 이들 교회들은 겉으로는 둘로 보이지만 사실은 하나입니다. 내적인 것으로부터 떨어져 나간, 외적인 것, 곧 표상적인 것(表象, the representative)은 단지 무슨 우상을 숭배하는 것, 곧 죽은 것인 반면, 외적인 것과 함께하는 내적인 것은 하나의 교회, 여기 아다와 씰라가 그런 것처럼 심지어 하나 된, 같은 교회를 형성하기 때문입니다. 하지만 야곱과 그의 후손은 라멕처럼 신앙이라는 게 전혀 없었기 때문에, 교회는 그들 가운데 남아 있을 수가 없어 대신 이방인들에게로 옮겨졌습니다. 이들 이방인들은 부정(不貞, infidelity) 대신 무지(無知, ignorance) 가운데 살았지요. 교회가 황폐해졌을 때, 그 가운데 진리를 가진 사람들이 남아 있을 경우는, 설령 있다 하더라도 극히 드물며, 교회는 그 경우, 진리에 관해 아무것도 모르는 사람들에게로 이동하는데요, 오히려 이 사람들이 저 사람들보다 더 쉽게 신앙을 받아들이기 때문입니다. The case was the same with the heresy called “Cain,” which in process of time was vastated, for although it acknowledged love, yet it made faith the chief and set it before love, and the heresies derived from this one gradually wandered from it, and Lamech, who was the sixth in order, altogether denied even faith. When this time arrived, a new light, or morning, shone forth, and a new church was made which is here named “Adah and Zillah,” who are called the “wives of Lamech.” They are called the wives of Lamech, although he possessed no faith, just as the internal and external church of the Jews, who also had no faith, are also in the Word called “wives,” being represented by Leah and Rachel, the two wives of Jacob—Leah representing the external church and Rachel the internal. These churches, although they appear like two, are yet only one; for the external or representative, separate from the internal, is but as something idolatrous, or dead, whereas the internal together with the external constitute a church, and even one and the same church, as Adah and Zillah do here. As however Jacob and his posterity, like Lamech, had no faith, the church could not remain with them, but was transferred to the gentiles, who lived not in infidelity but in ignorance. The church rarely, if ever, remains with those who when vastated have truths among them [apud se] but is transferred to those who know nothing at all of truths, for these embrace the faith much more easily than the former.
