저는 오늘날(18세기 중엽 유럽) 사람들 사이에 만연한 일반적인 생각들에 관하여 영들과 담론을 나눈 적이 있습니다. 그것은 사람들이 영의 존재를 믿지 않는다는 것인데, 그 이유는, 그들이 영이라는 것을 두 눈으로 볼 수도, 그들이 가진 머릿속 지식으로 이해할 수도 없기 때문이며, 그래서 그들은 영이 확장, 곧 무슨 외연을 가진다는 것을 부인할 뿐 아니라, 영이 일종의 실체라는 것도 부인한다는 것입니다. 실체가 무엇이냐를 가지고도 다투면서 말이지요. 영이 외연을 가진다는 것을 부인하며, 또 영의 실체에 관해 다투기 때문에, 그들은 또한 영은 어떤 곳, 곧 사람 몸 안에 있다는 사실을 부인합니다. 그러나 대부분의 단순한 사람들은 여전히 자기의 혼 또는 영이 자기 몸 안에 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 제가 이런 얘기들을 하자 훨씬 더 단순한 사람들이었던 그 영들은 현대인들이 그토록 어리석다는 사실에 무척 놀랐습니다. 그리고 ‘부분들 없는 부분들’ 같은, 그리고 다른 말들을 가지고 다투고들 있다는 말을 들었을 때, 그들은 그런 걸 우스꽝스럽다, 터무니없다, 웃음거리다고 하며, 그런 걸로 마음을 채우면 안 된다고, 안 그러면 지혜의 길이 닫힌다고 하였습니다. I have discoursed with spirits concerning the common opinion that prevails among men at the present day, that the existence of the spirit is not to be credited because they do not see it with their eyes, nor comprehend it by their memory-knowledges [scientias], and so they not only deny that the spirit has extension, but also that it is a substance, disputing as to what substance is. And as they deny that it has extension, and also dispute about substance, they also deny that the spirit is in any place, and consequently that it is in the human body; and yet the most simple might know that his soul or spirit is within his body. When I said these things, the spirits, who were some of the more simple ones, marveled that the men of the present day are so foolish. And when they heard the words that are disputed about, such as “parts without parts,” and other such terms, they called them absurd, ridiculous, and farcical, which should not occupy the mind at all, because they close the way to intelligence.
