※ ‘어린이’, ‘소년’의 속뜻, 이노센스, 체어리티

23절, 라멕이 아내들에게 이르되 아다와 씰라여 내 목소리를 들으라 라멕의 아내들이여 내 말을 들으라 나의 상처로 말미암아 내가 사람을 죽였고 나의 상함으로 말미암아 소년을 죽였도다 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice, ye wives of Lamech, and with your ears perceive my speech, for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a little one to my hurt.

말씀에 나오는 ‘어린이’(little one)나 ‘소년’(little child)은 이노센스(innocence, 순진)를 의미하며, 또한 체어리티도 의미합니다. 참된 이노센스는 체어리티 없이 존재할 수 없으며, 체어리티 역시 마찬가지이기 때문입니다. 이노센스에는 세 단계가 있는데, 말씀에서는 각각 ‘젖먹이’(sucklings), 걸음마 배우는 ‘아이’(infants) 및 ‘소년’(little children)으로 구분합니다. 참된 사랑과 체어리티 없이 참된 이노센스는 없기 때문에, ‘젖먹이’, ‘아이’ 및 ‘소년’은 또한 사랑의 세 단계를 의미하는데요, 즉 엄마나 유모를 향한 젖먹이의 사랑 같은 다정한 사랑, 부모를 향한 아이의 사랑 같은 사랑, 선생님을 향한 소년의 상냥한 사랑과 유사한 체어리티입니다. 그래서 이사야에는 말하기를 A “little one,” or “little child,” in the Word, signifies innocence, and also charity, for true innocence cannot exist without charity, nor true charity without innocence. There are three degrees of innocence, distinguished in the Word by the terms “sucklings,” “infants,” and “little children”; and as there is no true innocence without true love and charity, therefore also by “sucklings,” “infants,” and “little children” are signified the three degrees of love: namely, tender love, like that of a suckling toward its mother or nurse; love like that of an infant toward its parents; and charity, similar to that of a little child toward its instructor. Thus it is said in Isaiah:

그때에 이리가 어린 양과 함께 살며 표범이 어린 염소와 함께 누우며 송아지와 어린 사자와 살진 짐승이 함께 있어 어린아이에게 끌리며 (사11:6) The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf, and the young lion, and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. (Isa. 11:6)

여기 ‘양’, ‘염소’, ‘송아지’는 이노센스와 사랑의 세 단계를, ‘이리’, ‘표범’ 및 ‘어린 사자’는 그 반대를, 그리고 ‘어린아이’는 체어리티를 의미합니다. 예레미야에 Here a “lamb,” a “kid,” and a “calf” signify the three degrees of innocence and love; a “wolf,” a “leopard,” and a “young lion,” their opposites; and a “little child,” charity. In Jeremiah:

만군의 하나님 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하셨느니라 너희가 어찌하여 큰 악을 행하여 자기 영혼을 해하며 유다 가운데에서 너희의 남자와 여자와 아이와 젖 먹는 자를 멸절하여 남은 자가 없게 하려느냐 (렘44:7) Ye commit this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and wife, infant and suckling, out of the midst of Judah, to leave you no remains. (Jer. 44:7)

‘남자와 여자’는 이해와 의지에 속한, 곧 진리와 선에 속한 것들을, ‘아이와 젖 먹는 자’는 사랑의 첫 번째 단계들을 의미합니다. ‘아이’와 ‘어린이’가 이노센스와 체어리티를 가리키는 것은 누가복음에 주님 하신 말씀을 보면 아주 분명합니다. “Man and wife” denote things of the understanding and of the will, or of truth and of good; and “infant and suckling,” the first degrees of love. That an “infant” and a “little child” denote innocence and charity is very evident from the Lord’s words in Luke:

15사람들이 예수께서 만져 주심을 바라고 자기 어린 아기를 데리고 오매 제자들이 보고 꾸짖거늘 16예수께서 그 어린 아이들을 불러 가까이 하시고 이르시되 어린 아이들이 내게 오는 것을 용납하고 금하지 말라 하나님의 나라가 이런 자의 것이니라 17내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 누구든지 하나님의 나라를 어린아이와 같이 받아들이지 않는 자는 결단코 거기 들어가지 못하리라 하시니라 (눅18:15-17) They brought unto him little children that he should touch them. And Jesus said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, shall in no wise enter therein. (Luke 18:15-17)

주님 자신 ‘아기’(little one), ‘아들’(child)(사9:6)로 불리십니다. 주님은 이노센스 자체이시며, 사랑 자체이시기 때문입니다. 그리고 같은 구절에서 주님을 ‘기묘자, 모사, 전능하신 하나님, 영존하시는 아버지, 평강의 왕’이시라 하고 있습니다. The Lord himself is called a “little one,” or “child” (Isa. 9:6), because he is innocence itself and love itself, and in the same passage he is spoken of as “wonderful, counselor, God, hero, father of eternity, prince of peace.”
