창2 속뜻 주석을 시작하며

 

67. 주님의 신성한 자비로 말씀의 내적 의미(the internal meaning of the Word), 곧 속뜻을 아는 것이 제게 주어졌는데요, 이 속뜻은 그 안에 이전엔 어느 누구도 알 수 없었던 가장 깊은 아르카나(arcana, 秘義)가 들어있는 것으로, 이것은 저세상 삶의 본질(the nature of the other life)을 모르고서는 알 수 없는 그런 것인데요, (말씀의 속뜻에 속한 굉장히 많은 것들이 저세상 삶에 관한 것들이거나 그에 대한 설명 및 그런 것들을 포함하고 있기 때문이지요.) 그래서 저는 지난 수년간 제가 듣고 본 것, 곧 영들 및 천사들과 함께 있어 온 경험을 이젠 밝혀도 좋다는 허락을 받았습니다. As of the Lord’s Divine mercy it has been given me to know the internal meaning of the Word, in which are contained deepest arcana that have not before come to anyone’s knowledge, nor can come unless the nature of the other life is known (for very many things of the Word’s internal sense have regard to, describe, and involve those of that life), I am permitted to disclose what I have heard and seen during some years in which it has been granted me to be in the company of spirits and angels.

 

 

68. 저는 다음과 같은 사실들을 잘 알고 있는데요, 그것은 많은 사람들은 말하기를 아무도 그가 아직 살아있는 한, 영과 천사들(spirits and angels)하고 이야기하는 건 불가능하다 할 거라는 거, 많은 이들은 그건 죄다 공상(fancy)이라 할 것이며, 다른 이들 말은, 그건 제가 사람들 관심을 끌려고 그러는 거라는 거, 그리고 다른 이들은 또 다른 반대를 할 거라는 것이지요. 하지만 이 모든 것에 저는 낙담하지 않습니다. 저는 보았고(have seen), 들었고(have heard), 느꼈기(have felt) 때문입니다. I am well aware that many will say that no one can possibly speak with spirits and angels so long as he lives in the body; and many will say that it is all fancy, others that I relate such things in order to gain credence, and others will make other objections. But by all this I am not deterred, for I have seen, I have heard, I have felt.

 

 

69. 주님은 인간을 그가 몸 안에 사는 동안 영 및 천사들과 대화할 수 있게 지으셨습니다. 실제로 태고 때 그랬던 것처럼 말이지요. 인간은 몸을 옷처럼 입은 영(a spirit clothed with a body)으로서 그들과 하나이기 때문입니다. 그러나 시간이 지나면서 인간은 육체적이고 세속적인 것(corporeal and worldly things)에 자신을 지나치게 몰두, 그 외에는 아무것도 살피지 않았기 때문에 그만 그 길이 닫혔습니다. 하지만 여전히 인간은 지금 푹 잠겨있는 그 육체적인 것들로부터 물러나는 순간, 그 길은 다시 열리며, 그러면서 그는 영들 가운데, 그리고 그들과 공동생활 가운데 있게 되지요. Man was so created by the Lord as to be able while living in the body to speak with spirits and angels, as in fact was done in the most ancient times; for, being a spirit clothed with a body, he is one with them. But because in process of time men so immersed themselves in corporeal and worldly things as to care almost nothing for aught besides, the way was closed. Yet as soon as the corporeal things recede in which man is immersed, the way is again opened, and he is among spirits, and in a common life with them.

 

 

70. 지난 수년간 제가 듣고 본 것을 밝혀도 좋다 허락하셔서, 저는 여기서 먼저 소생 중인 사람(man when he is being resuscitated), 즉 사람이 이생에서 저 영생으로 들어가는 방법(how he enters from the life of the body into the life of eternity)에 대해 말씀드릴까 하는데요, 인간은 죽음 후에도 산다는 걸 저로 하여금 알게 하시려고 저에게 생전에 저와 알고 지냈던 많은 사람과 말도 하고 함께 있게도 하셨습니다. 겨우 하루나 한 주뿐 아니라 한 달 내지는 거의 일 년 간이나 마치 이 세상에서처럼 말도 하고 어울리게도 하시면서 말이지요. 그들은 죽으면 끝, 죽음 이후의 삶은 없다 아주 철썩같이 믿던 사람들이라 자기들이 분명히 죽었음에도, 그리고 다른 많은 사람들 역시 지금 모습이 살아생전 모습이어서 굉장히 놀랐습니다. 실제로 죽음 후 저세상에 있기까지 채 하루도 걸리지 않는데요, 그것은 죽음은 삶의 연속이기 때문입니다. As it is permitted me to disclose what for several years I have heard and seen, it shall here be told, first, how the case is with man when he is being resuscitated; or how he enters from the life of the body into the life of eternity. In order that I might know that men live after death, it has been given me to speak and be in company with many who were known to me during their life in the body; and this not merely for a day or a week, but for months, and almost a year, speaking and associating with them just as in this world. They wondered exceedingly that while they lived in the body they were, and that very many others are, in such incredulity as to believe that they will not live after death; when in fact scarcely a day intervenes after the death of the body before they are in the other life; for death is a continuation of life.

 

 

71. 그러나 이러한 내용들을 말씀 본문에 관한 것들 사이사이에 삽입하면 여기저기 흩어지고 그때그때 끊길 것이므로, 주님의 신성한 자비로 어떤 순서로 각 장 시작과 끝에 배치하게 하셨습니다. 부수적인 소개 외에 말이지요. But as these matters would be scattered and disconnected if inserted among those contained in the text of the Word, it is permitted, of the Lord’s Divine mercy, to append them in some order, at the beginning and end of each chapter; besides those which are introduced incidentally.

 

 

72. 따라서 허락하심을 받아 저는 이 장을 마치면서 사람이 어떻게 죽음에서 부활(man is raised from the dead), 영생(the life of eternity)으로 들어가는지 말씀드리겠습니다. At the end of this chapter, accordingly, I am allowed to tell how man is raised from the dead and enters into the life of eternity.
