구약 말씀을 단순히 그 겉 글자로만(the mere letter of the Word), 즉 기록된 글자 그대로만 읽어서는 아무도 다음과 같은 사실들, 곧 말씀의 이면(裏面, this part of the Word)에는 천국의 깊은 비밀들(deep secrets of heaven)이 들어있으며, 그리고 그 안에 들어있는 모든 것이 일반적이든 아니든 주님과 주님의 천국, 교회, 종교적 믿음, 그리고 그와 관련된 모든 것을 가리킨다는 사실들에 대해 심지어 알아차리는 것조차 쉽지 않으실 텐데요, 그 이유는 겉 글자나 글자의 뜻만 가지고 살필 수 있는 것이라고는 고작해야 그저 유대교회의 외적 의식과 규례(the external rites and ordinances)에 관한 것들뿐이기 때문입니다. 그러나 실상은 모든 말씀 안에는 내적(內的, internal)인 것들이 들어있는데, 이는 아주 몇 군데 주께서 사도들에게 계시하시고 설명하신 것들, 예를 들어, 희생제물이라는 것은 주님을 의미한다든지, 가나안 땅과 예루살렘은 천국을 의미하며, 그래서 이들을 일컬어 천국의 가나안, 천국의 예루살렘이라고 하는 것이라든지, 또 낙원도 유사한 의미를 갖는데, 이런 예들을 제외하고는 결코 외적(外的, external)인 것들 가운데 드러나지 않는 그런 것입니다. From the mere letter of the Word of the Old Testament no one would ever discern the fact that this part of the Word contains deep secrets of heaven, and that everything within it both in general and in particular bears reference to the Lord, to his heaven, to the church, to religious belief, and to all things connected therewith; for from the letter or sense of the letter all that anyone can see is that—to speak generally—everything therein has reference merely to the external rites and ordinances of the Jewish church. Yet the truth is that everywhere in that Word there are internal things which never appear at all in the external things except a very few which the Lord revealed and explained to the apostles; such as that the sacrifices signify the Lord; that the land of Canaan and Jerusalem signify heaven—on which account they are called the heavenly Canaan and Jerusalem—and that paradise has a similar signification.

 

오직 위에 있는 예루살렘은 자유자니 곧 우리 어머니라 (갈4:26)

 

그들이 이제는 더 나은 본향을 사모하니 곧 하늘에 있는 것이라 이러므로 하나님이 그들의 하나님이라 일컬음 받으심을 부끄러워하지 아니하시고 그들을 위하여 한 성을 예비하셨느니라 (히11:16)

 

그러나 너희가 이른 곳은 시온 산과 살아 계신 하나님의 도성인 하늘의 예루살렘과 천만 천사와 (히12:22)

 

2또 내가 보매 거룩한 성 새 예루살렘이 하나님께로부터 하늘에서 내려오니 그 준비한 것이 신부가 남편을 위하여 단장한 것 같더라, 10성령으로 나를 데리고 크고 높은 산으로 올라가 하나님께로부터 하늘에서 내려오는 거룩한 성 예루살렘을 보이니 (계21:2, 10)
