문자 그대로의 의미로만 해석하는 동안에는 그 안에 그러한 것들이 포함되어 있다는 것을 아무도 알 수 없습니다. 따라서 창세기의 첫 장에서는 세상의 창조와 낙원이라고 불리는 에덴동산, 그리고 최초의 피조물인 아담이라는 것 외에는 문자적 의미에서 발견할 수 있는 것은 아무 것도 없습니다. 어느 누가 거기서 다른 무엇을 가정할 수 있을까요? 그러나 다음 페이지에서 이러한 모든 것이 아직 한 번도 밝혀지지 않은 아르카나(arcana, 秘義)를 포함하고 있다는 사실, 곧 창세기 첫 장은 그 내적 의미로는 인간의 새로운 창조 또는 그의 중생, 특히 가장 오래된 교회를 다루고 있는 등, 이러한 모든 표현 안에 아르카나가 포함되지 않은 말씀은 하나도 없다는 것이 충분히 입증될 것입니다. While the mind cleaves to the literal sense alone, no one can possibly see that such things are contained within it. Thus in these first chapters of Genesis, nothing is discoverable from the sense of the letter other than that the creation of the world is treated of, and the garden of Eden which is called paradise, and Adam as the first created man. Who supposes anything else? But it will be sufficiently established in the following pages that these matters contain arcana which have never yet been revealed; and in fact that the first chapter of Genesis in the internal sense treats in general of the new creation of man, or of his regeneration, and specifically of the most ancient church; and this in such a manner that there is not the least expression which does not represent, signify, and enfold within it these things.
