※ ‘남자와 여자’(male and female)가 의미하는 것, 그 속뜻을 태고교회는 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 그들의 후손이 말씀의 내적 의미(the interior sense of the Word)를 잃어버리면서, 이 비의(秘義, arcanum, 단수, 복수는 arcana) 역시 사라졌습니다.

 

27절, 하나님이 자기 형상 곧 하나님의 형상대로 사람을 창조하시되 남자와 여자를 창조하시고 And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

‘남자와 여자’(male and female)가 의미하는 것, 그 속뜻(the internal sense)을 태고교회는 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 그들의 후손이 말씀의 내적 의미(the interior sense of the Word)를 잃어버리면서, 이 비의(秘義, arcanum, 단수, 복수는 arcana) 역시 사라졌습니다. 그들의 결혼은 그들 행복과 기쁨의 최고의 원천이었으며, 결혼의 더할 나위 없는 행복을 지각하고자 그들은 무엇이든 할 수만 있으면 모두 결혼에 비유했습니다. What is meant by “male and female,” in the internal sense, was well known to the most ancient church, but when the interior sense of the Word was lost among their posterity, this arcanum also perished. Their marriages were their chief sources of happiness and delight, and whatever admitted of the comparison they likened to marriage, in order that in this way they might perceive its felicity.

 

※ 가령, 햇볕, 곧 해의 빛과 열의 융합을 결혼으로, 자녀들 및 모든 동식물의 자식 및 열매들을 결혼의 결과로, 사람을 영과 육의 결혼으로, 삼위일체를 결혼으로 등등, 가능한 모든 것을 다 ‘결혼’으로 보고 설명할 수 있었다는 말인 것 같습니다.

 

또한 그들은 내적(內的, internal)이었기 때문에, 오직 내적인 것들로만 기뻐했습니다. 외적인 것들에 대해서는, 그들은 육안으로는 그저 볼 뿐, 그러나 이게 뭘 표현하는 걸까 그 영적, 천적 의미를 생각했습니다. Being also internal men, they were delighted only with internal things. External things they merely saw with the eyes, but thought of what was represented.

 

※ 이는 참 부러운 특성입니다. 오늘 이 시대 사람들에게는 말이지요. 지금 사람들은 너무나 외적(external)이요, 겉, 감각의 사람들이어서 영적, 천적인 주의 말씀들도 오로지 감각적으로만 이해합니다. 가령, 신령한 사람은 방언도 유창하고 세련되게 해야 하며, 안수기도를 하면 바로 눈앞에서 병이 척척 낫고, 각종 장애도 바로 나아야 하며, 예언 기도도 할 줄 알아야 합니다. 복 받기를 참 좋아하며, ‘복’의 참 의미에 대해서는 아예 관심도 없고, 무지하며, 내적(internal)이라는 게 도대체 무엇인지를 아예 이해조차 못 하면서도 자기는 믿는 사람이요, 신앙인이라고 말하는, 자기는 예수 믿고, 교회 다니는 사람이므로 죽으면 천당 간다고 믿는 그런 현실입니다.

 

외적인 것들은 그들에겐 그들의 생각을 어느 정도 내적인 것들로 돌리게 하는, 그 정도의 역할을 하는 것밖에는 아무것도 아니었습니다. 그러나 사실은 이 내적인 것들에서 천적인 것들로, 그렇게 그들의 모든 것 되신 주님께로, 그리고 그 결과, 그들이 자기들 결혼의 행복의 근원일 것이라고 지각한 천국의 결혼에까지 연결되는 것이지만 말입니다. 그래서 그들은 영적 인간의 이해(The understanding)를 남자(male), 의지(the will)를 여자(female)라 하였고, 이 둘이 하나로 움직일 때, 그걸 결혼이라 하였습니다. So that outward things were nothing to them, save as these could in some measure be the means of causing them to turn their thoughts to internal things, and from these to celestial things, and so to the Lord who was their all, and consequently to the heavenly marriage, from which they perceived the happiness of their marriages to come. The understanding in the spiritual man they therefore called male, and the will female, and when these acted as a one they called it a marriage.

 

※ 즉, 태고교회는 어떤 사람의 말과 행실이 일치할 때, 그는 이해와 의지가 결혼한 상태에 있다고 본 것입니다.

 

그 교회에서 관습이 된 말들이 나왔는데요, 선에 관한 교회의 애정으로부터 교회 그 자체를 가리켜 ‘딸’(daughter), ‘처녀’(virgin), 이 경우, ‘시온의 처녀’(the virgin of Zion), ‘예루살렘의 처녀’(the virgin of Jerusalem) 등으로 묘사했지요, 그리고 또한 ‘아내’(wife)라 하였습니다. 이들 주제에 대해서는 다음 장 23절과 3장 15절에서 보시기 바랍니다. From that church came the form of speech which became customary, whereby the church itself, from its affection of good, was called “daughter” and “virgin”—as the “virgin of Zion,” the “virgin of Jerusalem”—and also “wife.” But on these subjects see the following chapter, at verse 23, and chapter 3, verse 15.
