14절, 셋째 강의 이름은 힛데겔이라 앗수르 동쪽으로 흘렀으며 넷째 강은 유브라데더라 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel; that is it which goeth eastward toward Assyria; and the fourth river is Euphrates.

‘앗수르’가 합리적인 마음이나 인간의 이성을 상징한다는 것은 에스겔 같은 선지서들을 보면 아주 분명합니다. That “Asshur” signifies the rational mind, or the rational of man, is very evident in the prophets, as in Ezekiel:

 

3볼지어다 앗수르 사람은 가지가 아름답고 그늘은 숲의 그늘 같으며 키가 크고 꼭대기가 구름에 닿은 레바논 백향목이었느니라 4물들이 그것을 기르며 깊은 물이 그것을 자라게 하며 강들이 그 심어진 곳을 둘러 흐르며 둑의 물이 들의 모든 나무에까지 미치매 (겔31:3-4) Behold, Asshur was a cedar in Lebanon, with fair branches and a shady grove, and lofty in height; and her offshoot was among the thick boughs. The waters made her grow, the deep of waters uplifted her, the river ran round about her plant. (Ezek. 31:3–4)

 

이성을 ‘레바논 백향목’이라 하고 있으며, ‘꼭대기가 구름에 닿은’은 기억 지식들, 곧 이 매우 큰 곤경 가운데 있는 지식들입니다. 이것은 이사야를 보면 더욱 명료해집니다.  The rational is called a “cedar in Lebanon”; the “offshoot among the thick boughs,” signifies the knowledges of the memory, which are in this very plight. This is still clearer in Isaiah:

 

23그날에 애굽에서 앗수르로 통하는 대로가 있어 앗수르 사람은 애굽으로 가겠고 애굽 사람은 앗수르로 갈 것이며 애굽 사람이 앗수르 사람과 함께 경배하리라 24그날에 이스라엘이 애굽 및 앗수르와 더불어 셋이 세계 중에 복이 되리니 25이는 만군의 여호와께서 복 주시며 이르시되 내 백성 애굽이여, 내 손으로 지은 앗수르여, 나의 기업 이스라엘이여, 복이 있을지어다 하실 것임이라 (사19:23-25) In that day shall there be a path from Egypt to Asshur, and Asshur shall come into Egypt, and Egypt into Asshur, and the Egyptians shall serve Asshur. In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Asshur, a blessing in the midst of the land, that Jehovah Zebaoth shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Asshur the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance. (Isa. 19:23–25)

 

위 본문과 다른 여러 구절에서 ‘애굽’은 기억-지식들(memory-knowledges)을, ‘앗수르’는 이성(reason)을, 그리고 ‘이스라엘’은 지성(ntelligence)을 상징합니다. By “Egypt” in this and various other passages is signified memory-knowledges, by “Asshur” reason, and by “Israel” intelligence.
