창2:18-25

 

18여호와 하나님이 이르시되 사람이 혼자 사는 것이 좋지 아니하니 내가 그를 위하여 돕는 배필을 지으리라 하시니라 And Jehovah God said, It is not good that the man should be alone, I will make him a help as with him. 19여호와 하나님이 흙으로 각종 들짐승과 공중의 각종 새를 지으시고 아담이 무엇이라고 부르나 보시려고 그것들을 그에게로 이끌어 가시니 아담이 각 생물을 부르는 것이 곧 그 이름이 되었더라 And Jehovah God formed out of the ground every beast of the field, and every fowl of the heavens, and brought it to the man to see what he would call it; and whatsoever the man called every living soul, that was the name thereof. 20아담이 모든 가축과 공중의 새와 들의 모든 짐승에게 이름을 주니라 아담이 돕는 배필이 없으므로 And the man gave names to every beast, and to the fowl of the heavens, and to every wild animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a help as with him. 21여호와 하나님이 아담을 깊이 잠들게 하시니 잠들매 그가 그 갈빗대 하나를 취하고 살로 대신 채우시고 And Jehovah God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in the place thereof. 22여호와 하나님이 아담에게서 취하신 그 갈빗대로 여자를 만드시고 그를 아담에게로 이끌어 오시니 And the rib which Jehovah God had taken from the man, he built into a woman, and brought her to the man. 23아담이 이르되 이는 내 뼈 중의 뼈요 살 중의 살이라 이것을 남자에게서 취하였은즉 여자라 부르리라 하니라 And the man said, This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; therefore she shall be called wife, because she was taken out of man [vir]. 24이러므로 남자가 부모를 떠나 그의 아내와 합하여 둘이 한 몸을 이룰지로다 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh. 25아담과 그의 아내 두 사람이 벌거벗었으나 부끄러워하지 아니하니라 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

※ 위 영어 'own'은 고민 끝에 그냥 발음 그대로 '오운'으로 표기합니다. 우리말로 옮기기가 참 쉽지 않아서 그런데요, 그런 게 여럿 있습니다. 가령, 영어 'perception'이 그렇고, 'affection'이 그러하며, 'charity' 또한 그렇습니다. 이들 역시 발음 그대로 '퍼셉션', '어펙션', 그리고 '체어리티'로 보통은 옮기고 있습니다. 거듭 말씀드리지만, 이들 단어들은 만일 어느 하나로 옮길 경우, 그밖의 더욱 풍부한 여러 뉘앙스들을 다 잃어버리는 것 같기 때문입니다.

 

※ 우리말에 '거 참... 과연 그 친구답군!' 같은 표현이 있는데요, 이 '오운'의 뉘앙스가 거의 이런 게 아닌가 싶습니다.
