22절, 여호와 하나님이 아담에게서 취하신 그 갈빗대로 여자를 만드시고 그를 아담에게로 이끌어 오시니 And the rib which Jehovah God had taken from the man, he built into a woman, and brought her to the man.

갈빗대를 가리켜 ‘여자를 만드시고’(to be built into a woman)라고는 하시지만, 전에 거듭남을 다룰 때처럼, 여자는 ‘창조되었다’(created), ‘지어졌다’(formed), ‘만들어졌다’(made)라고 하시지는 않습니다. 그 이유는, 이 ‘만드는 것’(to build)은 쓰러져 있는 걸 일으켜 세우는 것이기 때문인데요, 말씀에서 이 뜻으로 쓰이는 곳마다 ‘만드는 것’(to build)은 주로 악에 관해, ‘일으켜 세우는 것’(to raise up)은 거짓에 관해, 그리고 ‘새롭게 하는 것’(to renew)은 둘 다에 관해 서술하고 있습니다. 이사야입니다. The rib is said to be “built into a woman,” but it is not said that the woman was “created,” or “formed,” or “made,” as before when treating of regeneration. The reason of this is that to “build” is to raise up that which has fallen; and in this sense it is used in the Word, where to “build” is predicated of evils; to “raise up,” of falsities; and to “renew,” of both; as in Isaiah:
그들은 오래 황폐하였던 곳을 다시 쌓을 것이며 옛부터 무너진 곳을 다시 일으킬 것이며 황폐한 성읍 곧 대대로 무너져 있던 것들을 중수할 것이며 (사61:4) They shall build the wastes of eternity, they shall set up again the ancient desolations, and they shall renew the cities of the waste, the desolations of generation and generation. (Isa. 61:4)
이 구절과 다른 구절들에서 ‘황폐함’(Wastes)은 악을, ‘무너짐’(desolations)은 거짓을 의미하며, ‘쌓는 것’(to build)은 전자, ‘다시 일으키는 것’(to set up again)은 후자에 적용됩니다. 선지서 다른 데들을 주의 깊게 관찰하면 이런 구분을 발견할 수 있는데요, 예를 들면, 예레미야입니다. “Wastes” in this and other passages signify evils; “desolations,” falsities; to “build” is applied to the former, to “set up again” to the latter, and this distinction is carefully observed in other places by the prophets, as where it is said in Jeremiah:
처녀 이스라엘아 내가 다시 너를 세우리니 네가 세움을 입을 것이요 네가 다시 소고를 들고 즐거워하는 자들과 함께 춤추며 나오리라 (렘31:4) Yet still will I build thee, and thou shall be built, O virgin of Israel. (Jer. 31:4)
