22절, 여호와 하나님이 아담에게서 취하신 그 갈빗대로 여자를 만드시고 그를 아담에게로 이끌어 오시니 And the rib which Jehovah God had taken from the man, he built into a woman, and brought her to the man.

‘그 갈빗대로 여자를 만드시고’(a rib was built into a woman)라는 이 말에는 지금까지 사람들이 겉 글자만 가지고 발견할 수 있었던 것보다 훨씬 더 많은 것이 그 안에 깊숙이 감추어져 있는데요, 주님의 말씀은 그 가장 깊은 뜻에 있어 주님 자신과 주님의 나라에 관한 것이며, 여기서 말씀의 모든 생명이 나오기 때문입니다. 이것은 지금 보고 있는 이 구절에서도 그런데요, 이 구절에 들어 있는 내용들 중 그 가장 핵심은 바로 천국의 결혼입니다. 천국 결혼은 그 오운에 존재하는 그런 어떤 본성인데요, 이 오운은 주님에 의해 생생해질 때, 주님의 ‘신부요 아내’(the bride and wife)라고 하는 것입니다. 그렇게 생생해진, 사람의 오운은 모든 사랑의 선과 신앙의 진리에 관한 퍼셉션을 가지며, 그 결과, 표현 불가한 행복과 함께 결합된 모든 지혜와 지성을 소유합니다. 그러나 이 생생해진 오운, 주님의 ‘신부요 아내’라고 하는, 이 오운의 본성은 어떻게 간결하게 설명할 수 있는 게 아닌데요, 그래서 천사들에 관한 다음과 같은 사실을 관찰하는 것만으로도 충분한데요, 그것은 곧, 천사들은 주님으로 말미암아 산다는 걸 지각하고 있다는 사실입니다. 비록 천사들일지라도 잠시 한눈파는 순간, 그들 역시 순전히 자신들의 힘으로 살아간다는 생각밖에는 할 수 없지만 말입니다. 그러나 그럴지라도 그들에게는 어떤 것이 살짝 사랑의 선과 신앙의 진리에서 벗어만나도 그 변화를 지각하는, 그런 본성에 관한 어떤 일반적인 애정이 있고, 그 결과, 그들은 자신들은 오직 주님으로 말미암아 산다는 퍼셉션 가운데 있게 되고, 그러면서 그들은 어떻게 표현할 수 없는 평화와 행복의 즐거움 가운데 있는 것입니다. 아래 예레미야에서 말하는 바 역시 바로 이런 오운을 의미합니다. The words “a rib was built into a woman” have more things inmostly concealed in them than it is possible for anyone ever to discover from the letter; for the Word of the Lord is such that its inmost contents regard the Lord himself and his kingdom, and from this comes all the life of the Word. And so in the passage before us, it is the heavenly marriage that is regarded in its inmost contents. The heavenly marriage is of such a nature that it exists in the own, which, when vivified by the Lord, is called the “bride and wife” of the Lord. Man’s own thus vivified has a perception of all the good of love and truth of faith, and consequently possesses all wisdom and intelligence conjoined with inexpressible happiness. But the nature of this vivified own, which is called the “bride and wife” of the Lord, cannot be concisely explained. Suffice it therefore to observe that the angels perceive that they live from the Lord, although when not reflecting on the subject they know no other than that they live from themselves; but there is a general affection of such a nature that at the least departure from the good of love and truth of faith they perceive a change, and consequently they are in the enjoyment of their peace and happiness, which is inexpressible, while they are in their general perception that they live from the Lord. It is this own also that is meant in Jeremiah, where it is said:

 

반역한 딸아 네가 어느 때까지 방황하겠느냐 여호와가 새 일을 세상에 창조하였나니 곧 여자가 남자를 둘러싸리라 (렘31:22) Jehovah hath created a new thing in the earth, a woman shall compass a man. (Jer. 31:22)

 

이 구절에서도 그 의미하는 바는 바로 천국 결혼인데요, ‘여자’(a woman)는 주님으로 말미암아 생생해진 오운을 의미하며, 그런 오운을 가진 여자가 ‘둘러싸리라’(to compass)라고 서술한 것은, 이 오운이 마치 살로 된 갈빗대가 심장을 에워싸듯 그렇게 에워싸기 때문입니다. It is the heavenly marriage that is signified in this passage also, where by a “woman” is meant the own vivified by the Lord, of which woman the expression “to compass” is predicated, because this own is such that it encompasses, as a rib made flesh encompasses the heart.
