※ 사람 몸에 속한 모든 것이 천국의 모든 것과 상응하기는 하지만, 사람이 천국의 형상인 까닭은 외적 형태 때문이 아니라 내적 형태(internal form) 때문이다. 사람의 내면(interiors)은 천국을 받고, 외면은 세상을 받기 때문이다.

천국의 모든 것과 사람의 모든 것 간에는 어떤 상응이 존재한다

사람 몸에 속한 모든 것이 천국의 모든 것과 상응하기는 하지만, 사람이 천국의 형상인 까닭은 외적 형태 때문이 아니라 내적 형태(internal form) 때문이다. 사람의 내면(interiors)은 천국을 받고, 외면은 세상을 받기 때문이다. 따라서 사람의 내면이 천국을 받아들이면, 그는 가장 큰 형상을 따르는 가장 작은 형태의 천국이 된다. 그러나 사람의 내면이 천국을 받아들이지 않으면, 그는 천국이 아니고, 가장 큰 형상을 따르지도 않는다. 그럼에도 그의 외면은 세상을 받기 때문에, 물질계의 원리(the order of the world)를 따를 수 있고, 따라서 다양한 아름다움을 지닐 수 있다. 몸에 속한 외적인 아름다움(outward beauty)은 부모와 태내에서의 형성으로 비롯되고, 그 후 세상의 일반적 입류(general influx from the world)에 의해 보존되기 때문이다. 그러므로 사람의 육체는 그의 영체의 모습과 크게 다를 수가 있다. 나는 여러 번 사람 속의 영을 보도록 허락되었는데, 어떤 이들은 겉모습은 아릅답고 매력적이었지만, 그 영은 일그러지고, 어둡고 괴물 같아(deformed, black and monstrous) 가히 지옥의 형상이라 할 만큼 결코 천국 형상은 아니었다. 한편 다른 이들은 겉모습은 아름답지 않았지만, 그 영은 매우 아름답고 맑고 천사 같았다. 사람이 죽은 후에는 세상에 살 때 몸 안에 있던 영의 모습이 그대로 나타난다. But notwithstanding that all things of man’s body correspond to all things of heaven, it is not in respect to his external form that man is an image of heaven, but in respect to his internal form; for man’s interiors are what receive heaven, while his exteriors receive the world. So far, therefore, as his interiors receive heaven, man is in respect to them a heaven in least form, after the image of the greatest. But so far as his interiors do not receive heaven he is not a heaven and an image of the greatest, although his exteriors, which receive the world, may be in a form in accordance with the order of the world, and thus variously beautiful. For the source of outward beauty which pertains to the body is in parents and formation in the womb, and it is preserved afterwards by general influx from the world. For this reason the form of one’s natural man differs greatly from the form of his spiritual man. What the form of a man’s spirit is I have been shown occasionally; and in some who were beautiful and charming in appearance the spirit was seen to be so deformed, black and monstrous that it might be called an image of hell, not of heaven; while in others not beautiful there was a spirit beautifully formed, pure, and angelic. Moreover, the spirit of man appears after death such as it has been in the body while it lived therein in the world.
