천국의 형상이 그렇기 때문에, 천국은 주님에 의해 단 한 사람처럼, 즉 한 단위로 다스려진다. 잘 알려진 대로 사람은 전체나 각 세부나 무수히 다양한 부분들로 이루어졌다. 전체는 사지와 기관과 내장들로, 그리고 각 부분은 섬유와 신경과 혈관으로 되어 있어 지체 안에 지체가, 부분 안에 부분이 있다. 그럼에도 사람은 한 사람으로 움직인다. 이와 같이 천국도 주님의 감찰과 인도하심에 따라 하나로 움직이는 것이다. Heaven being such, it is ruled by the Lord as a single man is ruled, thus as a one. For although man, as we know, consists of an innumerable variety of parts, not only as a whole but also in each part—as a whole, of members, organs, and viscera; and in each part, of series of fibers, nerves, and blood vessels, thus of members within members, and of parts within parts— nevertheless, when he acts he acts as a single man. Such likewise is heaven under the auspices and direction of the Lord.

※ 사실 천사들은 천국 전체가 사람 모양으로 되어 있는 것을 볼 수는 없다. 천국 전체는 어떤 천사의 시야에도 다 들어오지 않기 때문이다. 다만 그들은 수천의 천사들로 된 공동체가 멀리서 보면 사람 모양인 것을 때때로 보기 때문에, 그 공동체를 일부로 하는 전체 천국의 모양도 그러하다고 결론짓는다.

사실 천사들은 천국 전체가 사람 모양으로 되어 있는 것을 볼 수는 없다. 천국 전체는 어떤 천사의 시야에도 다 들어오지 않기 때문이다. 다만 그들은 수천의 천사들로 된 공동체가 멀리서 보면 사람 모양인 것을 때때로 보기 때문에, 그 공동체를 일부로 하는 전체 천국의 모양도 그러하다고 결론짓는다. 왜냐하면, 가장 완벽한 형태는, 전체는 부분과 부분은 전체와 똑같이 구성되어 있고, 한 원본의 크고 작은 복사판처럼 그 크기가 다를 뿐이기 때문이다. 그래서 천사들은 신성이 그 모든 것을 그 가장 내적이고, 가장 높은 차원에서 보시기 때문에, 주님의 눈에 천국 전체가 한 형태를 이룬다고 말한다. The angels, it is true, do not see heaven in its whole complex in the human form, for heaven as a whole does not come within view of any angel; but remote societies, consisting of many thousands of angels, they sometimes see as a one in the human form; and from a society, as from a part, they draw their conclusion as to the general, which is heaven. For in the most perfect form generals are like the parts, and parts are like the generals, with simply such a difference as there is between like things of greater or less magnitude; consequently, the angels say that since the Divine from what is inmost or highest sees all things, so in the Lord’s sight heaven as a whole must be in the human form.

사람에 대한 천사의 개념이 그렇기 때문에, 천사들은 사람이 그 몸으로 하는 행동에는 관심을 두지 않고, 그 행동의 동기가 되는 의지만을 본다. 천사들은 의지를 사람 자체라고 하고, 사고력은 의지와 일치하는 한에 있어서만 사람이라고 한다.주61 Such being the angelic idea of man, the angels give no thought to what a man does with his body, but only to the will from which the body acts. This they call the man himself, and the understanding they call the man so far as it acts in unison with the will.61

주61. 사람의 의지는 그의 생명 자체(esse)이며, 그의 이해(understanding)는 거기서 나오는 그의 생명의 외양(existere)이다. The will of man is the very being [esse] of his life, and his understanding is the outgo [existere] of his life therefrom (n. 3619, 5002, 9282). 사람의 주된 생명(chief life)은 그의 의지의 생명(the life of his will)이며, 거기서 이해의 생명(the life of the understanding)이 나온다. The chief life of man is the life of his will, and from that the life of the understanding proceeds (n. 585, 590, 3619, 7342, 8885, 9282, 10076, 10109, 10110). 사람은 그의 의지와 그로 인한 이해(his will and his understanding therefrom)로 사람이다. Man is man by virtue of his will and his understanding therefrom (n. 8911, 9069, 9071, 10076, 10109, 10110).
