신앙의 가르침들을 자기들이 가진 욕망 실현의 도구로 이용하고, 이런 상태로 자기를 사랑하고, 자아를 사랑하면서, 남들과 비교, 자기들만이 가진 위대함이 얼마나 뛰어난지, 자기들이 얼마나 중요한 사람들인지 하는, 끔찍할 정도로 소름 돋는 망상, 즉 종교적 신념에 사로잡힌 사람들, 이런 자들이 바로 ‘네피림’입니다. (4절) Those who immersed the doctrinal things of faith in their yearnings, and in consequence of this as well as of the love of self conceived dreadful persuasions of their own greatness in comparison with others, are signified by the “Nephilim” (verse 4).

어떤 영들은 세상에 사는 동안 성부는 시인하면서 주님은 보통 사람과 다름없다고 여기고, 주께서 천국의 하나님이신 것을 믿지 않았다. 그래서 그들에게 주님께 속한 천국 외에 또 다른 천국이 있는지 어디든 돌아다니며 조사해 보게 했다. 그 영들은 여러 날 동안 돌아다녔으나 아무 것도 찾을 수 없었다. 그들은 천국의 행복은 영광과 권력에 있다고 여기는 사람들이었다. 자기가 원하는 것을 얻지 못하고, 또 천국은 그런 것으로 이루어지지 않았다는 말을 듣자 그들은 분노했다. 그들은 남을 지배할 수 있는 천국, 세상에서와 같은 영광을 크게 누릴 수 있는 천국을 원했기 때문이다. There were certain spirits who while living in the world had professed to believe in the Father; but of the Lord they had the same idea as of any other man, and therefore did not believe him to be the God of heaven. For this reason they were permitted to wander about and inquire wherever they wished whether there were any other heaven than the heaven of the Lord. They searched for several days, but nowhere found any. These were such as place the happiness of heaven in glory and dominion; and as they were unable to get what they desired, and were told that heaven does not consist in such things, they became indignant, and wished for a heaven where they could lord it over others and be eminent in glory like that in the world.
