천사들에게 영향을 주고 천국을 만드는 것은 주의 신성이고, 주의 신성은 사랑이라는 것을 천국에서의 내 모든 경험이 증명한다. 천국의 모든 이들은 사랑과 자비의 형상이며, 그 얼굴과 말과 생명의 모든 세부에서까지 사랑과 형용할 수 없는 아름다움이 비쳐 나온다.주23 더욱이, 모든 천사와 영들에게는 각자에게서 분출되어 각자를 둘러싸고 있는 생명의 영적 영향권(spiritual spheres)이 있는데, 어떤 이들의 것은 상당히 멀리까지 확장된다. 그 영향권을 보면, 그의 사랑에서 생기는 애정이 어떤지 알 수 있다. 이 영향권은 각자의 애정과 그에 따른 사고의 생명에서, 즉 그의 사랑과 그에 따른 신앙의 생명에서 분출되기 때문이다. 천사들에게서 발산되는 영향권은 너무도 사랑으로 가득 차서 함께 있는 이들의 삶 가장 내적인 차원에까지 영향을 준다. 나도 자주 천사들의 영향권을 느끼고, 그렇게 감동받았다.주24 천사들이 사랑에서 생명을 얻는 것은 다음과 같은 사실로도 증명된다. 그 세계에서는 모든 사람이 각자의 사랑을 따라 몸을 돌린다. 주님과 이웃을 사랑하는 사람들은 끊임없이 주님을 향해 돌아서고, 자기를 사랑하는 사람들은 끊임없이 주님께 등을 돌린다. 그들이 매번 몸을 돌릴 때마다 그렇게 된다. 영계에서는 공간이 그들의 내면 상태와 일치하기 때문이며, 또 방위도 이 세상에서처럼 고정되어 있는 것이 아니고, 그들이 어느 쪽을 향하고 있느냐에 따라 달라지기 때문이다. 그러나 천사들 자신이 주님을 향해 돌아서는 것이 아니라, 주님께서 당신의 일을 행하는 것을 사랑하는 사람들을 당신께로 향하게 하시는 것이다.주25 더 자세한 것은 뒤에 영계의 방위를 다룬 장에서 설명하겠다. All experience in heaven attests that the Divine that goes forth from the Lord and that affects angels and makes heaven is love; for all who are in heaven are forms of love and charity, and appear in ineffable beauty, with love shining forth from their faces, and from their speech and from every particular of their life.23 Moreover, there are spiritual spheres of life emanating from and surrounding every angel and every spirit, by which their quality in respect to the affections of their love is known, sometimes at a great distance. For with everyone these spheres flow forth from the life of his affection and consequent thought, or from the life of his love and consequent faith. The spheres that go forth from angels are so full of love as to affect the inmosts of life of those who are with them. They have repeatedly been perceived by me and have thus affected me.24 That it is love from which angels have their life is further evident from the fact that in the other life everyone turns himself in accordance with his love—those who are in love to the Lord and in love toward the neighbor turning themselves always to the Lord, while those who are in love of self turn themselves always away from the Lord. This is so, however their bodies may turn, since with those in the other life spaces conform to the states of their interiors, likewise quarters, which are not constant as they are in this world, but are determined in accordance with the direction of their faces. And yet it is not the angels that turn themselves to the Lord; but the Lord turns to himself those that love to do the things that are from him.25 But more on this subject hereafter, where the quarters in the other life are treated of.

주24. 영적 구체(球體, sphere)는 생명의 구체인데, 모든 사랑, 영, 천사에게서 흘러넘치고 뿜어져 나와 그들 자신을 에워싼다. A spiritual sphere, which is a sphere of the life, overflows and pours forth from every man, spirit, and angel, and encompasses them (n. 4464, 5179, 7454, 8630). 이것은 그들의 애정과 그에 따른 사고의 생명에서 나온다. It flows from the life of their affection and consequent thought (n. 2489, 4464, 6206).

주25. 영들과 천사들은 끊임없이 자기들이 사랑하는 대상을 향해 돌아선다. 천국에 있는 사람들은 끊임없이 주님을 향해 돌아선다. Spirits and angels turn themselves constantly to their loves, and those in the heavens turn themselves constantly to the Lord (n. 10130, 10189, 10420, 10702). 저세상 방위는 자신의 얼굴 방향에 따라 제각각이며, 그렇게 정해진다. 이 세상 방위하고는 다르다. Quarters in the other life are to each one in accordance with the direction of his face, and are thereby determined, otherwise than in the world (n. 10130, 10189, 10420, 10702).

나는 여러 번, 천사들과 이 문제를 놓고 대화했다. 그들은 주님 사랑과 이웃 사랑이란 실로 선과 진리를 사랑하고, 의도적으로 행하는 것임을 기독교인들이 모르고 있다는 사실에 놀라움을 금치 못했다. 사랑을 나타내는 길은 상대가 원하는 바를 의도하고 행하는 것이라는 것, 그럼으로써 서로 사랑하게 되고, 상대와 결합되는 것을 교인들은 알아야 한다. 그러나 상대방을 사랑한다고 하면서 그가 원하는 것을 하지 않으면 그렇게 될 수 없다. 그것은 본질적으로 전혀 사랑하는 것이 아니다. 또 그들이 알아야 할 것은 주님께로부터 오는 선은 주님과 비슷한 모습이라는 점이다. 주님이 그 안에 계시기 때문이다. 그러므로 선과 진리를 의도하고 행함으로써 자기 삶이 되게 한 사람은 주님을 닮게 되며, 주님과 결합된다. 이 사실은 성경에서 주님이 가르치신 바 있다. I have repeatedly talked with angels about this matter. They were astonished, they said, that men of the church do not know that to love the Lord and to love the neighbor is to love what is good and true, and to do this from the will, when they ought to know that one evinces love by willing and doing what another wishes, and it is this that brings reciprocal love and conjunction, and not loving another without doing what he wishes, which in itself is not loving; also that men should know that the good that goes forth from the Lord is a likeness of him, since he is in it; and that those who make good and truth to belong to their life by willing them and doing them become likenesses of the Lord and are conjoined to him. Willing is loving to do. That this is so the Lord teaches in the Word, saying,

10내가 아버지의 계명을 지켜 그의 사랑 안에 거하는 것 같이 너희도 내 계명을 지키면 내 사랑 안에 거하리라, 12내 계명은 곧 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라 하는 이것이니라 (요15:10, 12) If ye do My commandments ye shall abide in My love (John 15:10, 12).

천국에는 서로 구별되는 두 가지 사랑이 있다. 주님을 향한 사랑(love to the Lord)과 이웃을 향한 사랑(love toward the neighbor)이다. 주님 사랑은 삼층천, 즉 가장 내적인 천국의 특성이다. 이웃 사랑은 이층천, 즉 중간 천국의 특성이다. 둘 다 주님께로부터 나와 천국을 이루는 사랑이다. 천국에서는 이 두 사랑이 어떻게 다르며, 또 어떻게 서로 융합되는가를 밝히 알 수 있다. 이 세상에서는 어렴풋이 알 수 있을 뿐이다. 천국에서는 주님을 사랑한다는 것은 주님 개인을 사랑하는 것이 아니라 주님께로부터 오는 선을 사랑하는 것이다. 선을 사랑한다는 것은 선을 의도하고 사랑으로 선을 행하는 것이다. 마찬가지로, 이웃을 사랑한다는 것도 이웃을 개인적으로 사랑하는 것이 아니라 말씀에서 나오는 진리를 사랑하는 것이다. 진리를 사랑한다는 것은 진리를 추구하고 실천하는 것이다. 이로 보아 이 두 종류의 사랑은 선과 진리가 서로 구별되듯 구별되고, 선과 진리가 서로 융합하듯 융합되는 것을 알 수 있다.주21 그러나 사랑이라는 게 무엇인지, 선이라는 게 무엇인지, 그리고 이웃이라는 게 무엇인지를 알기 전까지는 사람은 이걸 거의 이해할 수 없다.주22 In heaven there are two distinct loves, love to the Lord and love toward the neighbor, in the inmost or third heaven love to the Lord, in the second or middle heaven love toward the neighbor. They both go forth from the Lord, and they both make heaven. How these two loves are distinct and how they are conjoined is seen in heaven in clear light, but in the world only obscurely. In heaven loving the Lord does not mean loving him in respect to his person, but it means loving the good that is from him; and to love good is to will and do good from love; and to love the neighbor does not mean loving a companion in respect to his person, but loving the truth that is from the Word; and to love truth is to will and do it. This makes clear that these two loves are distinct as good and truth are distinct, and that they are conjoined as good is conjoined with truth.21 But this can scarcely be comprehended by men unless it is known what love is, what good is, and what the neighbor is.22

주22. 이웃을 사랑한다는 것은 이웃을 한 개인으로 사랑하는 것이 아니라 그의 안에 있는 주님의 것(in him from which he is what he is)인 진리와 선을 사랑하는 것이다. To love the neighbor is not to love the person, but to love that in him from which he is what he is, that is, his truth and good. (n. 5028, 10336) 사람을 사랑하지, 그 사람 안에 있는 주님의 것을 사랑하지는 않는 사람들은 악과 선을 같이 사랑하는 것이다. Those who love the person, and not that in him from which he is what he is, love evil and good alike. (n. 3820) 체어리티(charity, 이웃 사랑, 자선, 기부, 인애)는 진리를 위하여 진리를 의도하고, 진리로 감동되어 진리에 대한 애정을 갖는 것이다. Charity is willing truths and being affected by truths for the sake of truths. (n. 3876, 3877) 이웃을 향한 체어리티는 모든 일과 모든 역할, 쓰임새 가운데 선, 정의 및 의로운 것을 행하는 것이다. Charity toward the neighbor is doing what is good, just, and right, in every work and in every function. (n. 8120–8122)
