3절, 세월이 지난 후에 가인은 땅의 소산으로 제물을 삼아 여호와께 드렸고 And at the end of days it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering to Jehovah.

‘세월이 지난 후에’가 시간의 경과를 의미한다는 건 누가 봐도 분명합니다. 처음에는, 그리고 그 안에 순박함이 있었을 동안에는, 여기 ‘가인’이라 부르는 교리는 나중처럼 그렇게 도저히 받아들일 수 없는 정도는 아니었습니다. 그들의 자녀를 ‘여호와로 말미암았다’ 한 걸 보면 말입니다. 그래서 처음엔 신앙이 너무 사랑으로부터 분리되어 있어 ‘세월이 지난 후에’라든지 시간이 그만큼 흘렀다 할 만큼은 아니었습니다. 모든 참 신앙의 교리들이 다 그렇듯 말입니다.  That by the “end of days” is signified in process of time, is evident to all. At first, and while there was simplicity in it, the doctrine here called “Cain” does not appear to have been so unacceptable as it became afterwards, as is evident from the fact that they called their offspring a “man Jehovah.” Thus at first faith was not so far separated from love as at the “end of days,” or in process of time; as is wont to be the case with every doctrine of true faith.

‘세월이 지난 후에’는 시간의 경과를, ‘땅의 소산’은 체어리티 없는 신앙 행위들을, ‘여호와께 드리는 제물’은 그런 신앙으로 드리는 예배를 의미합니다. By the “end of days” is meant in process of time; by the “fruit of the ground,” the works of faith without charity; and by “an offering to Jehovah,” worship thence derived.

2절, 그가 또 가인의 아우 아벨을 낳았는데 아벨은 양 치는 자였고 가인은 농사하는 자였더라 And she added to bear his brother Abel; and Abel was a shepherd of the flock, and Cain was a tiller of the ground.

‘농사하는 자’는 체어리티가 없는 사람, 하지만 사랑과 분리된 신앙으로는 또 아주 제대로일 수 있는, 이런 건 전혀 신앙이 아니지만, 그런 사람이라는 것은 여호와께서 가인의 제사에 전혀 관심을 보이지 않으셨다는 것과, 그가 그의 동생을 죽였다는 것, 즉 ‘아벨’로 상징된 체어리티를 파괴했다는 것을 보면 분명합니다. ‘땅을 간다’는 말을 들었던 사람들은 육적(肉), 세속적인 것들을 쳐다보는 사람들이라는 것은 창세기 3장 19절과 23절에, ‘그를 내보내어 그의 근원이 된 땅을 갈게 하시니라’ 하신 말씀을 보면 분명합니다. That a “tiller of the ground” is one who is devoid of charity, however much he may be in faith separated from love, which is no faith, is evident from what follows: that Jehovah had no respect to his offering, and that he slew his brother, that is, destroyed charity, signified by “Abel.” Those were said to “till the ground” who look to bodily and earthly things, as is evident from what is said in Gen. 3:19, 23, where we read that the man was “cast out of the garden of Eden to till the ground.”

19네가 흙으로 돌아갈 때까지 얼굴에 땀을 흘려야 먹을 것을 먹으리니 네가 그것에서 취함을 입었음이라 너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아갈 것이니라 하시니라, 23여호와 하나님이 에덴 동산에서 그를 내보내어 그의 근원이 된 땅을 갈게 하시니라 (창3:19, 23)
