※ 약간의 사랑이라도 없이는 생명이라는 것은 불가능하며, 사랑에서 흘러나오지 않고서는 기쁨이라는 것도 불가능하다는 사실, 이 사실을 아주 잘 아는 것, 이것은 모든 사람이 가지고 있는 기본적인 능력이지요. 사랑, 생명, 기쁨이란 이런 것, 곧 이렇게 서로 본질적으로 연결된 것입니다.

14-17절, 14하나님이 이르시되 하늘의 궁창에 광명체들이 있어 낮과 밤을 나뉘게 하고 그것들로 징조와 계절과 날과 해를 이루게 하라 And God said, Let there be luminaries in the expanse of the heavens, to distinguish between the day and the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and for years. 15또 광명체들이 하늘의 궁창에 있어 땅을 비추라 하시니 그대로 되니라 And let them be for luminaries in the expanse of the heavens, to give light upon the earth; and it was so. 16하나님이 두 큰 광명체를 만드사 큰 광명체로 낮을 주관하게 하시고 작은 광명체로 밤을 주관하게 하시며 또 별들을 만드시고 And God made two great luminaries, the greater luminary to rule by day, and the lesser luminary to rule by night; and the stars. 17하나님이 그것들을 하늘의 궁창에 두어 땅을 비추게 하시며 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens, to give light upon the earth;

약간의 사랑이라도 없이는 생명이라는 것은 불가능하며, 사랑에서 흘러나오지 않고서는 기쁨이라는 것도 불가능하다는 사실, 이 사실을 아주 잘 아는 것, 이것은 모든 사람이 가지고 있는 기본적인 능력이지요. 사랑, 생명, 기쁨이란 이런 것, 곧 이렇게 서로 본질적으로 연결된 것입니다. 만일 어떤 사람한테서 사랑을, 같은 말이지만 무언가 그가 간절히 원하는 걸 제거한다면, 그 순간 그는 그 즉시 생각이라는 걸 할 수 없게 되며, 놀랍게도 무슨 죽은 사람처럼 되고 맙니다. 생명에 대해 지금까지 제가 영계, 특히 천국에서 목격했던 장면들처럼 말입니다. 자기 사랑(the loves of self)과 세상 사랑(the loves of the world) 안에도 생명이나 기쁨하고 뭔가 닮은 게 있습니다만, 그러나 이 둘은 참된 사랑하고는 정반대이기 때문에, 사랑이라기보다는 오히려 미움입니다. 왜냐하면, 사람이 자기 자신과 세상을 사랑하면 할수록 그는 그에 비례해서 이웃을, 그리고 그 결과 주님을 미워하기 때문이지요. 참고로, 사람이 무엇보다도 주님을 사랑하는 주님 사랑과, 그리고 이웃을 제 몸처럼 사랑하는 이웃 사랑은 바로 이 참된 사랑에서 시작합니다, 이런 까닭에, 참된 사랑은 주님을 향한 사랑이요, 참된 생명은 주님으로부터 오는 사랑의 생명이고, 참된 기쁨은 그 생명에서 오는 기쁨입니다. 참된 사랑은 단 하나만 있을 수 있으며, 참된 생명 역시 그런데요, 이 생명에서 참된 기쁨과 더할 나위 없는 참된 행복이 흘러나오지요. 천국에 있는 천사들에게 속한 것들이 바로 이런 것들입니다. It is in everyone’s power very well to know that no life is possible without some love, and that no joy is possible except that which flows from love. Such however as is the love, such is the life, and such the joy: if you were to remove loves, or what is the same thing, desires—for these are of love—thought would instantly cease, and you would become like a dead person, as has been shown me to the life. The loves of self and of the world have in them some resemblance to life and to joy, but as they are altogether contrary to true love, which consists in a man’s loving the Lord above all things, and his neighbor as himself, it must be evident that they are not loves, but hatreds, for in proportion as anyone loves himself and the world, in the same proportion he hates his neighbor, and thereby the Lord. Wherefore true love is love to the Lord, and true life is the life of love from him, and true joy is the joy of that life. There can be but one true love, and therefore but one true life, whence flow true joys and true felicities, such as are those of the angels in the heavens.

사랑과 신앙을 처음에는 ‘큰 광명체들’(great luminaries)이라고 하시다가, 그다음엔 사랑은 ‘큰 광명체’(greater luminary), 신앙은 ‘작은 광명체’(lesser luminary)라 하시고, 계속해서 사랑에 관해서는 ‘낮을 주관하라’(rule by day), 신앙에 관해서는 ‘밤을 주관하라’(rule by night) 하십니다. 이런 것들은 감추어진 아르카나(arcana, 단수 arcanum, 秘義)인데, 특히 종말의 때인 이때 이들에 대한 설명이 주님의 신성하신 자비(the Lord’s Divine mercy)로 허락되었습니다. 이들 아르카나가 종말인 이때 특히 더 봉인된 이유는, 지금이 시대의 끝(the consummation of the age), 곧 사랑이라는 게 아주 희귀하고, 그 결과 신앙이라는 것 또한 아주 희귀한 때이기 때문인데, 주님 친히 복음서에서 이미 다음과 같은 말씀으로 예언하신 것입니다. Love and faith are first called “great luminaries,” and afterwards love is called a “greater luminary,” and faith a “lesser luminary”; and it is said of love that it shall “rule by day,” and of faith that it shall “rule by night.” As these are arcana which are hidden, especially in this end of days, it is permitted of the Lord’s Divine mercy to explain them. The reason why these arcana are more especially concealed in this end of days is that now is the consummation of the age, when there is scarcely any love, and consequently scarcely any faith, as the Lord himself foretold in the evangelists in these words:

그날 환난 후에 즉시 해가 어두워지며 달이 빛을 내지 아니하며 별들이 하늘에서 떨어지며 하늘의 권능들이 흔들리리라 (마24:29) The sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken. (Matt. 24:29)

여기서 ‘해’(sun)는 사랑을 의미하는데 어두워지며, ‘달’(moon)은 신앙을 의미하는데 빛을 내지 않습니다. ‘별들’(stars)은 신앙에 관한 지식들인데 하늘에서 떨어지며, 이들이 곧 ‘하늘의 권능들’(virtues and powers of the heavens)입니다. By the “sun” is here meant love, which is darkened; by the “moon” faith, which does not give light; and by the “stars,” the knowledges of faith, which fall from heaven, and which are the “virtues and powers of the heavens.”

[2] 태고교회(太古, The most ancient church)는 사랑 그 자체 말고는 무슨 다른 신앙을 인식하지도 못했습니다. 천적 천사들(天的, The celestial angels) 또한 사랑의 신앙 말고는 신앙이라는 게 뭔지도 몰랐습니다. 천국 전체가 일종의 사랑의 천국인데요, 천국에서는 사랑의 생명 말고 무슨 다른 생명이라는 건 없기 때문입니다. 여기서 천국의 모든 행복이 시작되는 것이며, 이는 단 한 번도 그 설명이 허락된 적도, 심지어 인류 그 어느 누구도 상상조차 할 수 없었던 것이어서 그래서 정말 엄청난 것입니다. 사랑의 영향 아래 있는 사람들은 마음으로 주님을 사랑하면서도, 또한 다음과 같은 사실을 알고, 선언하고, 지각하기도 하는데요, 그것은 모든 사랑은, 그리고 결과적으로는 모든 생명은, 이 생명은 오직 사랑에만 속한 것이지요, 그리고 그 결과 모든 행복은 오직 주님으로부터만 오며, 자기들한테서는 그 어떤 사랑이나 생명, 행복도 말미암지 않는다는 사실입니다. 주님이 모든 사랑의 근원이시라는 사실은 또한 기록된 대로, 주님의 변모, 변형(變形, transfiguration) 관련, 큰 광명체, 즉 ‘해’(sun)로 설명되었습니다. The most ancient church acknowledged no other faith than love itself. The celestial angels also do not know what faith is except that which is of love. The universal heaven is a heaven of love, for there is no other life in the heavens than the life of love. From this is derived all heavenly happiness, which is so great that nothing of it admits of description, nor can ever be conceived by any human idea. Those who are under the influence of love, love the Lord from the heart, but yet know, declare, and perceive, that all love, and consequently all life—which is of love alone—and thus all happiness, come solely from the Lord, and that they have not the least of love, of life, or of happiness, from themselves. That it is the Lord from whom all love comes was also represented by the great luminary or “sun” at his transfiguration, for it is written:

그들 앞에서 변형되사 그 얼굴이 해 같이 빛나며 옷이 빛과 같이 희어졌더라 (마17:2) His face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. (Matt. 17:2)

내면 가장 깊은 것들이 얼굴로, 그리고 거기서 나오는 것들은 옷으로 상징되는데요, 그래서 주님의 신성(神性, the Lord’s Divine)이 ‘해’(sun), 즉 사랑으로, 주님의 인성(人性, his human)은 ‘빛’(light), 즉 사랑에서 나오는 지혜로 상징된 것입니다. Inmost things are signified by the face, and the things that proceed from them by the raiment. Thus the Lord’s Divine was signified by the “sun,” or love; and his human by the “light,” or wisdom proceeding from love.

‘큰 광명체들’(great luminaries)은 사랑과 신앙을 의미하며, ‘해, 달, 별들’(sun, moon, and stars)이라고도 한다는 사실은 에스겔 같은 선지서를 보면 분명합니다. That the “great luminaries” signify love and faith, and are also called “sun, moon, and stars,” is evident from the prophets, as in Ezekiel:

7내가 너를 불 끄듯 할 때에 하늘을 가리어 별을 어둡게 하며 해를 구름으로 가리며 달이 빛을 내지 못하게 할 것임이여 8하늘의 모든 밝은 빛을 내가 네 위에서 어둡게 하여 어둠을 네 땅에 베풀리로다 주 여호와의 말씀이니라 (겔32:7-8) When I shall extinguish thee, I will cover the heavens and make the stars thereof black; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light; all the luminaries of the light of heaven will I make black over thee, and I will set darkness upon thy land. (Ezek. 32:7–8)

이 구절에 나오는 바로와 애굽 사람들은 말씀에서 그저 감각이요, 지식일 뿐인 원리(the principle of mere sense and of mere knowledge [sensuale et scientificum])를 의미하는데, 여기서는 감각과 지식일 뿐인 것들을 통해 사랑과 신앙이 끝나버렸음을 의미합니다. 이사야에서도 그렇습니다. In this passage Pharaoh and the Egyptians are treated of, by whom are meant, in the Word, the principle of mere sense and of mere knowledge [sensuale et scientificum]; and here, that by things of sense and of mere knowledge, love and faith had been extinguished. So in Isaiah:

9보라 여호와의 날 곧 잔혹히 분냄과 맹렬히 노하는 날이 이르러 땅을 황폐하게 하며 그 중에서 죄인들을 멸하리니 10하늘의 별들과 별 무리가 그 빛을 내지 아니하며 해가 돋아도 어두우며 달이 그 빛을 비추지 아니할 것이로다 (사13:9-10) The day of Jehovah cometh to set the land in desolation, for the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light; the sun is darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. (Isa. 13:9–10)

다시, 요엘에서 Again, in Joel:

1시온에서 나팔을 불며 나의 거룩한 산에서 경고의 소리를 질러 이 땅 주민들로 다 떨게 할지니 이는 여호와의 날이 이르게 됨이니라 이제 임박하였으니 2곧 어둡고 캄캄한 날이요 짙은 구름이 덮인 날이라 새벽빛이 산꼭대기에 덮인 것과 같으니 이는 많고 강한 백성이 이르렀음이라 이와 같은 것이 옛날에도 없었고 이후에도 대대에 없으리로다, 10그 앞에서 땅이 진동하며 하늘이 떨며 해와 달이 캄캄하며 별들이 빛을 거두도다 (욜2:1-2, 10) The day of Jehovah cometh, a day of darkness and of thick darkness; the earth trembleth before him, the heavens are in commotion; the sun and the moon are blackened, and the stars withdraw their brightness. (Joel 2:1–2, 10)

[2] 다시 이사야에서, 주님의 오심(the advent of the Lord)과 이방인들, 결과적으로는 일종의 새로운 교회이지요, 어두움 가운데서 빛을 받아 거듭나고 있는 모든 사람의 눈이 밝아짐에 관해 말하면서 Again, in Isaiah, speaking of the advent of the Lord and the enlightening of the gentiles, consequently of a new church, and in particular of all who are in darkness, and receive light, and are being regenerated:

1일어나라 빛을 발하라 이는 네 빛이 이르렀고 여호와의 영광이 네 위에 임하였음이니라 2보라 어둠이 땅을 덮을 것이며 캄캄함이 만민을 가리려니와 오직 여호와께서 네 위에 임하실 것이며 그의 영광이 네 위에 나타나리니 3나라들은 네 빛으로, 왕들은 비치는 네 광명으로 나아오리라, 20다시는 네 해가 지지 아니하며 네 달이 물러가지 아니할 것은 여호와가 네 영원한 빛이 되고 네 슬픔의 날이 끝날 것임이라 (사60:1-3, 20) Arise, shine, for thy light is come; behold darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness the peoples, and Jehovah shall arise upon thee, and the gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising; Jehovah shall be to thee a light of eternity, thy sun shall no more go down, neither shall thy moon withdraw itself, for Jehovah shall be to thee a light of eternity. (Isa. 60:1–3, 20)

그래서 시편에서 So in David:

5지혜로 하늘을 지으신 이에게 감사하라 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다 6땅을 물 위에 펴신 이에게 감사하라 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다 7큰 빛들을 지으신 이에게 감사하라 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다 8해로 낮을 주관하게 하신 이에게 감사하라 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다 9달과 별들로 밤을 주관하게 하신 이에게 감사하라 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다 (시136:5-9) Jehovah in intelligence maketh the heavens; he stretcheth out the earth above the waters; he maketh great luminaries, the sun to rule by day, the moon and stars to rule by night. (Ps. 136:5–9)

3해와 달아 그를 찬양하며 밝은 별들아 다 그를 찬양할지어다 4하늘의 하늘도 그를 찬양하며 하늘 위에 있는 물들도 그를 찬양할지어다 (시148:3-4) Glorify ye Jehovah, sun and moon, glorify him, all ye stars of light, glorify him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that are above the heavens. (Ps. 148:3–4)

[3] 이들 모든 구절에서 ‘광명체들’(luminaries)은 사랑과 신앙을 의미합니다. 유대교회에서 저녁부터 아침까지 여호와 앞에 끊임없이 등불이 타오르게 하신 이유는 바로 이것, 곧 ‘광명체들’이 주님을 향한 사랑과 신앙을 표상하고 상징했기 때문이었습니다. 유대교회의 모든 규례가 주님에 관한 표상(表象, representative)이었기 때문인데요, 이 등불(luminary, 광명체)에 대하여 기록된 바로는 In all these passages, “luminaries” signify love and faith. It was because “luminaries” represented and signified love and faith toward the Lord that it was ordained in the Jewish church that a perpetual luminary should be kept burning from evening till morning, for every ordinance in that church was representative of the Lord. Of this luminary it is written:

20너는 또 이스라엘 자손에게 명령하여 감람으로 짠 순수한 기름을 등불을 위하여 네게로 가져오게 하고 끊이지 않게 등불을 켜되 21아론과 그의 아들들로 회막 안 증거궤 앞 휘장 밖에서 저녁부터 아침까지 항상 여호와 앞에 그 등불을 보살피게 하라 이는 이스라엘 자손이 대대로 지킬 규례이니라 (출27:20-21) Command the sons of Israel that they take oil for the luminary, to cause the lamp to ascend continually: in the tabernacle of the congregation without the veil, which is before the testimony, shall Aaron and his sons order it from evening even until morning, before Jehovah. (Exod. 27:20–21)

이런 것들이 사랑과 신앙을 상징한다는 것, 곧 주께서 거기에 불을 붙이셔서 먼저 속 사람에게 빛을 비추시고, 그렇게 속 사람을 통해서 이번에는 겉 사람을 비추시는 이런 주님의 신성하신 자비(the Lord’s Divine mercy)에 대해서 앞으로 해당 말씀에서 보시게 됩니다. That these things signify love and faith, which the Lord kindles and causes to give light in the internal man, and through the internal man in the external, will of the Lord’s Divine mercy be shown in its proper place.

※ 짐작하셨겠지만, ‘표상’(表象, representative)이란 어떤 것을 가지고, 정확히는 지상의 사물을 가지고 주님과 주님께 속한 것을 가리키는, 나타내는 것입니다.
