15절, 내가 너로 여자와 원수가 되게 하고 네 후손도 여자의 후손과 원수가 되게 하리니 여자의 후손은 네 머리를 상하게 할 것이요 너는 그의 발꿈치를 상하게 할 것이니라 하시고 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; he shall trample upon thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

이 구절이 주님 강림(降臨)에 관한 첫 번째 예언인 걸 모든 사람이 알고 있습니다. 이 워딩 자체를 보면 정말 그런 것처럼 보이며, 그래서 이 워딩과, 또 선지자들로 말미암아 심지어 유대인들조차 어떤 메시아라는 분이 한 분 오시는 걸로 알고들 있었는데요, 그러나 지금까지 여기 나오는 ‘뱀’(the serpent), ‘여자’(the woman), ‘뱀의 후손’(the serpent’s seed), ‘여자의 후손’(the woman’s seed), ‘네 머리를 상하게 할 것이요’(the head of the serpent which was to be trodden upon), ‘그의 발꿈치를 상하게 할 것이니라’(the heel which the serpent should bruise)가 특별히 뭘 의미하는지를 이해하는 사람은 아무도 없었고, 그래서 일단은 이 표현들의 속뜻부터 설명드려야만 하겠습니다. 여기서 ‘뱀’은 일반적으로는 모든 악을, 구체적으로는 자아 사랑을 의미합니다. ‘여자’는 교회를 의미하며, ‘뱀의 후손’은 모든 부정(不貞, infidelity)을, ‘여자의 후손’은 주님 신앙을, ‘그’는 주님 자신을, ‘뱀의 머리’는 일반적으로는 악이 우세함을, 구체적으로는 자아 사랑이 우세함을, ‘상하게 하다’(to trample upon)는 암울함의 결과, ‘배로 다니고 흙을 먹게’ 될, ‘발꿈치’는 자연적으로 가장 낮은 거, 육(肉) 같은, 곧 뱀이 ‘상하게’ 할 걸 의미합니다. Everyone is aware that this is the first prophecy of the Lord’s advent into the world; it appears indeed clearly from the words themselves, and therefore from them and from the prophets even the Jews knew that a messiah was to come. Hitherto however no one has understood what is specifically meant by the “serpent,” the “woman,” the “serpent’s seed,” the “woman’s seed,” the “head of the serpent which was to be trodden upon,” and the “heel which the serpent should bruise.” They must therefore be explained. By the “serpent” is here meant all evil in general, and specifically the love of self; by the “woman” is meant the church; by the “seed of the serpent,” all infidelity; by the “seed of the woman,” faith in the Lord; by “he,” the Lord himself; by the “head of the serpent,” the dominion of evil in general, and specifically that of the love of self; by to “trample upon,” depression, so that it should “go upon the belly and eat dust”; and by the “heel,” the lowest natural (as the corporeal), which the serpent should “bruise.”

14절, 여호와 하나님이 뱀에게 이르시되 네가 이렇게 하였으니 네가 모든 가축과 들의 모든 짐승보다 더욱 저주를 받아 배로 다니고 살아 있는 동안 흙을 먹을지니라 And Jehovah God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above every beast, and above every wild animal of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.

‘살아 있는 동안 흙을 먹을지니라’(to eat dust all the days of its life)의 속뜻은 그들의 감각 파트는 몸과 땅의 걸로만 살아가게 되었다, 즉 지옥같은 그런 삶이 되었다는 말인데요, 이는 말씀에서 ‘흙’(dust)이 상징하는 걸 보면 분명합니다. 미가서입니다. That to “eat dust all the days of its life” signifies that their sensuous part became such that it could not live from anything except that which is of the body and the earth, that is to say, that it became infernal, is evident also from the signification of “dust” in the Word; as in Micah:

14원하건대 주는 주의 지팡이로 주의 백성 곧 갈멜 속 삼림에 홀로 거주하는 주의 기업의 양 떼를 먹이시되 그들을 옛날같이 바산과 길르앗에서 먹이시옵소서 16이르되 여러 나라가 보고 자기의 세력을 부끄러워하여 손으로 그 입을 막을 것이요 귀는 막힐 것이며 17그들이 뱀처럼 티끌을 핥으며 땅에 기는 벌레처럼 떨며 그 좁은 구멍에서 나와서 두려워하며 우리 하나님 여호와께로 돌아와서 주로 말미암아 두려워하리이다 (미7:14, 16-17) Feed thy people as in the days of eternity. The nations shall see and shall blush at all their might; they shall lick the dust like a serpent, they shall be shaken out of their holds like creeping things [serpentes] of the earth. (Micah 7:14, 16–17)

‘옛날같이’(The days of eternity)는 태고교회를 의미하며, ‘여러 나라’(the nations)는, 자신들의 오운(own)을 신뢰하는 자들인데, ‘그들이 뱀처럼 티끌을 핥으며’라고 서술되고 있는 사람들입니다. The “days of eternity” mean the most ancient church; the “nations,” those who trust in their own, of whom it is predicated that “they shall lick the dust like a serpent.”

시편에도 In David:

광야에 사는 자는 그 앞에 굽히며 그의 원수들은 티끌을 핥을 것이며 (시72:9) Barbarians shall bow themselves before God, and his enemies shall lick the dust. (Ps. 72:9)

‘광야에 사는 자’(Barbarians)와 ‘원수들’(enemies)은 오직 땅과 세속적인 것들만 생각하는 사람들입니다. 이사야입니다. “Barbarians” and “enemies” are those who regard only earthly and worldly things. In Isaiah:

이리와 어린 양이 함께 먹을 것이며 사자가 소처럼 짚을 먹을 것이며 뱀은 흙을 양식으로 삼을 것이니 나의 성산에서는 해함도 없겠고 상함도 없으리라 여호와께서 말씀하시니라 (사65:25) Dust shall be the serpent’s bread. (Isa. 65:25)

‘흙’(dust, 아래 마10:14에서는 먼지로 번역)이 영적, 천적인 것들은 생각하지 않고, 대신 오로지 육적이고 땅에 속한 것만 생각하는 사람들을 의미하기 때문에, 주님은 제자들에게 명하시기를,

누구든지 너희를 영접하지도 아니하고 너희 말을 듣지도 아니하거든 그 집이나 성에서 나가 너희 발의 먼지를 떨어 버리라 (마10:14)

하신 것입니다. As “dust” signifies those who do not regard spiritual and celestial things, but only what is corporeal and earthly, therefore the Lord enjoined his disciples that if the city or house into which they entered was not worthy, they should “shake off the dust of their feet” (Matt. 10:14).

그래서 사람이 천국의 일들에 대해 생각할 때, 그를 가리켜 ‘똑바로 서서 걷는다’(to walk erect), ‘위를 본다’(to look upward), ‘앞으로 나아간다’(forward)고 합니다. 다 같은 의미인데요, 반대로 그가 육적이고 땅에 속한 일들을 생각할 땐, 그때는 그를 가리켜 ‘엎드려 배로 다닌다’, ‘아래를 본다’, ‘뒤로 물러간다’고 합니다. 레위기입니다. And therefore when man had regard to heavenly things, he was said to “walk erect,” and to “look upward,” or “forward,” which means the same; but when he had regard to corporeal and earthly things, he was said to be “bowed to the earth,” and to “look downward” or “backward.” As in Leviticus:

나는 너희를 애굽 땅에서 인도해 내어 그들에게 종된 것을 면하게 한 너희의 하나님 여호와이니라 내가 너희의 멍에의 빗장을 부수고 너희를 바로 서서 걷게 하였느니라 (레26:13) I am Jehovah your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bonds of your yoke, and made you to go erect. (Lev. 26:13)

미가에도 In Micah:

그러므로 여호와의 말씀에 내가 이 족속에게 재앙을 계획하나니 너희의 목이 이에서 벗어나지 못할 것이요 또한 교만하게 다니지 못할 것이라 이는 재앙의 때임이라 하셨느니라 (미2:3) Ye shall not thence remove your necks, neither shall ye go erect. (Micah 2:3)

예레미야에도 In Jeremiah:

8예루살렘이 크게 범죄함으로 조소거리가 되었으니 전에 그에게 영광을 돌리던 모든 사람이 그의 벗었음을 보고 업신여김이여 그는 탄식하며 물러가는도다, 13높은 곳에서 나의 골수에 불을 보내어 이기게 하시고 내 발 앞에 그물을 치사 나로 물러가게 하셨음이여 종일토록 나를 피곤하게 하여 황폐하게 하셨도다 (애1:8, 13) Jerusalem hath sinned a sin, therefore they despise her, because they have seen her nakedness; yea, she groaned and hath turned backward. From on high hath he sent fire into my bones, and hath made me to return backward; he hath made me desolate. (Lam. 1:8, 13)

그리고 이사야에서도 And in Isaiah:

24네 구속자요 모태에서 너를 지은 나 여호와가 이같이 말하노라 나는 만물을 지은 여호와라 홀로 하늘을 폈으며 나와 함께 한 자 없이 땅을 펼쳤고 25헛된 말을 하는 자들의 징표를 폐하며 점치는 자들을 미치게 하며 지혜로운 자들을 물리쳐 그들의 지식을 어리석게 하며 (사44:24-25) Jehovah thy redeemer, that turneth wise men backward, and maketh foolish their knowledge. (Isa. 44:24–25)
