14절, 여호와 하나님이 뱀에게 이르시되 네가 이렇게 하였으니 네가 모든 가축과 들의 모든 짐승보다 더욱 저주를 받아 배로 다니고 살아 있는 동안 흙을 먹을지니라 And Jehovah God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above every beast, and above every wild animal of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.

앞서 ‘여호와 하나님이 뱀에게 이르시되’(Jehovah God speaking to the serpent)의 의미, 곧 자신들의 감각 파트가 바로 자신들의 타락의 원인임을 그들은 지각했다는 걸 보여주었으므로 이에 대해 더 설명할 건 없지 싶습니다. Having before shown that by “Jehovah God speaking to the serpent” is signified their perceiving the sensuous part to be the cause of their fall, no more need be said in regard to these words.

천적이었던 태고인들에게 있어서는 몸에 속한 감각적인 것들은 그들의 속 사람에게 순응하고 순종하는 그런 것들이었고, 심지어 그들은 그런 것들에는 주의도 기울이지 않았습니다. 그러나 그들이 스스로를 사랑하기 시작하면서부터 감각에 속한 것들을 속 사람보다 우선했고, 그 결과 그것들은 분리가 되더니 육체가 되었으며, 그렇게 해서 저주 아래 놓이게 된 것입니다. In the most ancient celestial men the sensuous things of the body were of such a character as to be compliant and subservient to their internal man, and beyond this they did not care for them. But after they had begun to love themselves, they set the things of sense before the internal man, and therefore those things were separated, became corporeal, and so were condemned.

‘여호와 하나님이 뱀에게 이르시되’(Jehovah God said unto the serpent)는 그들이 자신들의 감각 파트가 자신들의 타락의 원인임을 지각했다는 의미입니다. ‘네가 모든 가축과 들의 모든 짐승보다 더욱 저주를 받아’(The serpent cursed above every beast and above every wild animal of the field)는 그들의 감각 파트가 자신들을 천적(天的, heavenly)인 것으로부터 눈을 돌려 몸, 육체를 향하게 하더니, 결국 저주를 자초하게 했음을 의미합니다. 여기 ‘가축’(the beast)과 ‘들의 짐승’(the wild animal of the field)은 앞에서처럼 어펙션(affections, 애정)을 의미합니다. ‘배로 다니고’(The serpent going upon its belly)는 이제 더 이상 감각 파트는 천국에 속한 것들을 바라보는 대신 몸과 땅에 속한 것만 내려다보게 되었음을 의미합니다. ‘살아 있는 동안 흙을 먹을지니라’(Its eating dust all the days of its life)는 이제 감각 파트는 몸과 땅에 속한 걸로만 살아가야 하는, 다시 말씀드리면, 지옥처럼 되었음을 의미합니다. By “Jehovah God said unto the serpent” is signified that they perceived their sensuous part to be the cause [of their fall]. “The serpent cursed above every beast and above every wild animal of the field” signifies that their sensuous part averted itself from that which is heavenly, and turned itself to that which is of the body, and thus cursed itself; the “beast,” and the “wild animal of the field” here signify affections, as before. The “serpent going upon its belly” signifies that their sensuous part could no longer look upward to the things of heaven, but only downward, to those of the body and the earth. Its “eating dust all the days of its life” signifies that their sensuous part became such that it could not live from anything but that which is of the body and the earth, that is to say, it became infernal.
