앞의 두 가름에서, 천국 전체가 한 사람의 모습이고, 각 공동체도 그와 마찬가지라는 것을 밝혔다. 각 천사도 이와 똑같다는 것은 거기 설명한 원리에 따른 당연한 논리적 귀결이다. 천국이 가장 큰 형태의 사람이고, 각 공동체가 작은 형태의 사람이듯이 천사는 가장 작은 형태의 사람인 것이다. 천국 형태처럼 지극히 완벽한 형태는 전체와 부분이 서로 같은 모양이기 때문이다. 그렇게 되는 이유는, 천국이 모든 것을 함께 나누는 곳이라는 데 있다. 천국의 모든 것은 모든 구성원에게 나누어지며, 각 구성원은 자기가 가진 모든 것을 그 나누어짐에 의해 받기 때문이다. 앞의 해당 가름에서 말했듯이, 천사는 그처럼 받아들이는 그릇이기 때문에, 천국의 가장 작은 형태가 되는 것이다. 사람도 그가 천국을 받아들이는 한, 그릇이며 천국이고 천사이다(57번 글 참조). 이것은 계시록에 이렇게 표현되었다. In the two preceding chapters it has been shown that heaven in its whole complex, and likewise each society in heaven, reflects a single man. From the sequence of reasons there set forth it follows that this is equally true of each angel. As heaven is a man in largest form, and a society of heaven in a less form, so is an angel in least. For in the most perfect form, such as the form of heaven is, there is a likeness of the whole in the part and of the part in the whole. This is so for the reason that heaven is a common sharing, for it shares all it has with each one, and each one receives all he has from that sharing. Because an angel is thus a recipient he is a heaven in least form, as shown above in its chapter; and a man also, so far as he receives heaven, is a recipient, a heaven, and an angel (see above, n. 57). This is thus described in Revelation:

그 성곽을 측량하매 백사십사 규빗이니 사람의 측량 곧 천사의 측량이라 (계21:17) He measured the wall of the holy Jerusalem, a hundred and forty and four cubits, the measure of a man, which is that of an angel (Rev. 21:17).

여기서 ‘예루살렘’은 주님의 교회이고, 더 높은 의미로는 천국이다.주64 ‘성곽’은 거짓이나 악의 침범을 막는 진리이다.주65 ‘백사십사’라는 수는 모든 선과 진리의 총합을 뜻하고,주66 ‘측량’(measure)은 그 특성을 말한다.주67 ‘사람’은 그 안에 모든 일반적, 세부적 진리와 선, 즉 천국이 있는 사람을 말하고, 그것이 있어 천사도 사람이므로, ‘사람의 측량’은 ‘천사의 측량’이기도 하다. 이것이 이 말씀의 영적인 뜻이다. 이 영적 의미를 모르고, 과연 누가 ‘거룩한 성 예루살렘 성곽을 사람의 측량 곧 천사의 측량으로 잰다’주68는 말을 이해할 수 있겠는가? “Jerusalem” means here the Lord’s church, and in a more eminent sense, heaven;64 the “wall” means truth, which is a defense against the assault of falsities and evils;65 “a hundred and forty and four” means all goods and truths in the complex;66 “measure” means what a thing is,67 a “man” means one in whom are goods and truths in general and in particular, thus in whom is heaven. And as it is from this that an angel is a man, it is said “the measure of a man, which is that of an angel.” This is the spiritual meaning of these words. Without that meaning how could it be seen that “the wall of the holy Jerusalem” is “the measure of a man, which is that of an angel”?68

Likewise “seventy-two,” and “a hundred and forty-four,” since this comes from twelve multiplied into itself (n. 7973). 말씀에 나오는 모든 숫자는 뭔가를 상징한다. All numbers in the Word signify things (n. 482, 487, 647, 648, 755, 813, 1963, 1988, 2075, 2252, 3252, 4264, 4495, 5265). 배수들은 같은 걸 상징하는데, 이때의 상징은 단순, 기본 숫자에 곱셈을 통해 나오는, 그런 상징이다. Multiplied numbers have a like signification as the simple numbers from which they arise by multiplication (n. 5291, 5335, 5708, 7973).

주67. 말씀에 나오는 ‘측량, 측정’(Measure)은 진리와 선에 관한 어떤 것의 퀄러티를 상징한다. “Measure” in the Word signifies the quality of a thing in respect to truth and good (n. 3104, 9603).

이미 말했듯이, 각 공동체의 형상이 사람인 것은, 천국 전체가 사람 모습이기 때문이다. 천국의 형태처럼 가장 완벽한 형태에 있어서는, 부분은 전체와 비슷하고, 보다 작은 형태들은 가장 큰 형태와 비슷하다. 천국의 보다 작은 형태들과 부분들은 천국을 구성하는 공동체들인데, 그 공동체들도 각기 작은 형태의 천국이다. 이 유사성은 항구적이다. 천국에서는 모두의 선이 단 하나의 사랑에서 나오고, 따라서 근원이 같기 때문이다. 천국에 있는 모든 이의 선의 근원인, 그 단 하나의 사랑은 주님을 향한 사랑이고, 이것은 주님으로 말미암는다. 그러므로 전체적으로는 온 천국이, 부분적으로는 각 공동체가, 그리고 개별적으로는 각 천사가 주님을 닮은 모습이다. 이에 대한 것은 앞에 설명했다. Each society, when it appears as one whole, is in the form of a man, for the reason that heaven as a whole has that form (as has been shown in the preceding chapter); moreover, in the most perfect form, such as the form of heaven is, there is a likeness of the parts to the whole, and of lesser forms to the greatest. The lesser forms and parts of heaven are the societies of which it consists, which are also heavens in lesser form (see 51–58). This likeness is perpetual because in the heavens the goods of all are from a single love, that is, from a single origin. The single love, which is the origin of the good of all in heaven, is love to the Lord from the Lord. It is from this that the entire heaven in general, each society less generally, and each angel in particular, is a likeness of the Lord, as has been shown above (n. 58).

한 공동체 안의 구성원은 하나로 움직이므로 구성원이 많으면 많을수록 그 사회는 더 완벽한 사람 형태를 갖춘다. 앞에서 말한 대로, 천국 형태를 이룬 다양성에서 완벽성이 나오며, 다양성은 다수로 이루어지기 때문이다. 더욱이, 천국의 모든 사회는 나날이 그 구성원이 늘어나기 때문에, 나날이 더 완벽해진다. 따라서 각 공동체뿐 아니라 공동체들로 이루어진 천국 전체도 나날이 더 완벽해지는 것이다. 이것을 보면, 천국이 가득 차서 닫힌다는 생각이 얼마나 잘못된 것인지 알 수 있다. 사실은 그 반대로, 천국은 결코 닫히지 않으며, 한없이 채워지고, 그럴수록 더 완벽해지는 것이다. 그래서 천사들이 가장 바라는 것은, 새로운 사람이 천국에 들어와 천사가 되는 것이다. It is worthy of mention that the greater the number in any society in heaven and the more these make a one, the more perfect is its human form, for variety arranged in a heavenly form is what constitutes perfection, as has been shown above (n. 56), and number gives variety. Moreover, every society of heaven increases in number daily, and as it increases it becomes more perfect. Thus not only the society becomes more perfect, but also heaven in general, because it is made up of societies. As heaven gains in perfection by increase of numbers, it is evident how mistaken those are who believe that heaven may be closed by becoming full; for the opposite is true, that it will never be closed, but is perfected by greater and greater fullness. Therefore, the angels desire nothing so much as to have new angel guests come to them.
