14여호와 하나님이 뱀에게 이르시되 네가 이렇게 하였으니 네가 모든 가축과 들의 모든 짐승보다 더욱 저주를 받아 배로 다니고 살아 있는 동안 흙을 먹을지니라 And Jehovah God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above every beast, and above every wild animal of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life. 15내가 너로 여자와 원수가 되게 하고 네 후손도 여자의 후손과 원수가 되게 하리니 여자의 후손은 네 머리를 상하게 할 것이요 너는 그의 발꿈치를 상하게 할 것이니라 하시고 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; he shall trample upon thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. 16또 여자에게 이르시되 내가 네게 임신하는 고통을 크게 더하리니 네가 수고하고 자식을 낳을 것이며 너는 남편을 원하고 남편은 너를 다스릴 것이니라 하시고 And unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth sons, and thine obedience shall be to thy man [vir], and he shall rule over thee. 17아담에게 이르시되 네가 네 아내의 말을 듣고 내가 네게 먹지 말라 한 나무의 열매를 먹었은즉 땅은 너로 말미암아 저주를 받고 너는 네 평생에 수고하여야 그 소산을 먹으리라 And unto the man he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake; in great sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life. 18땅이 네게 가시덤불과 엉겅퀴를 낼 것이라 네가 먹을 것은 밭의 채소인즉 And the thorn and the thistle shall it bring forth unto thee, and thou shalt eat the herb of the field. 19네가 흙으로 돌아갈 때까지 얼굴에 땀을 흘려야 먹을 것을 먹으리니 네가 그것에서 취함을 입었음이라 너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아갈 것이니라 하시니라 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken; for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

나중에 홍수로까지 이어지는, 현 태고교회의 후속 상태가 여기 기술되고 있습니다. 그 당시 교회는 자신을 철저히 파괴했기 때문에, 주님이 세상에 오셔서 인류를 구원하실 것이라는 예언이 주어집니다. The subsequent state of the church down to the flood is here described; and as at that time the church utterly destroyed itself, it is foretold that the Lord would come into the world and save the human race.

세상 학문과 지식을 가지고 신앙의 신비들을 자세히 들여다보겠다고 하는 건 마치 낙타가 바늘구멍을 통과하겠다는 것만큼이나, 그리고 갈비뼈 하나로 가슴과 심장의 극히 미세한 근육들을 움직이겠다는 것만큼이나 불가능한 일입니다. To explore the mysteries of faith by means of memory-knowledges is as impossible as it is for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, or for a rib to govern the finest fibrils of the chest and of the heart.

다시 너희에게 말하노니 낙타가 바늘귀로 들어가는 것이 부자가 하나님의 나라에 들어가는 것보다 쉬우니라 하시니 (마19:24)

거칠고 투박한 것, 네, 정말 거칠고 투박하지요! 영적, 천적인 것에 비하면 우리의 감각과 세상 학문, 과학 지식이라는 건 말입니다. So gross, yea, much more so, is that which pertains to our senses and memory-knowledge relatively to what is spiritual and celestial.

※ 주님의 허락으로 스베덴보리 57세 때 시작, 죽을 때까지 27년간 계속된 영계 체험을 통해서 영들과 천사들, 그리고 주님의 그 영광의 지혜와 비밀들에 대하여 알게 된 그로서는 그에 비해 이 세상 지혜와 지식, 학문적 성과라는 것들이 얼마나 초라하고 하등한 것인지가 아주 생생하게 대비되었던 것 같습니다.

자연의 셀 수 없이 많은 비밀을 철저히 조사하겠다고 하는 사람은 사실은 거의 단 하나도 발견하기 어렵고, 또 잘 알려진 대로, 조사하는 중에 그만 오류에 빠지곤 하는데요, 영적, 천적 삶 가운데 숨겨진 진리들을 조사하는 경우는 훨씬 더합니다. 그런 삶에는 자연적으로는 볼 수도 없는 것 하나 안에도 얼마나 많은 무수한 신비들이 존재하는지 모릅니다! He who would investigate the hidden things of nature, which are innumerable, discovers scarcely one, and while investigating them falls into errors, as is well known. How much more likely is this to be the case while investigating the hidden truths of spiritual and celestial life, where myriads of mysteries exist for one that is invisible in nature!

[2] 한 가지 예를 들어 살펴보면은, 사람은 스스로는 악을 행하는 것 밖에는, 그리고 주님으로부터는 등을 돌리는 것 밖에는 할 수 있는 게 없습니다. 하지만 사람이 그러는 게 아니라 그에게 와 있는 악한 영들이 그러는 것이며, 악한 영들 역시 그들 자신이 그러는 게 아니라 그들이 그동안 그걸로 자신의 오운(own)을 만들어 온 악 자체가 그러는 겁니다. 영적 실상이 이런데도, 사람은 이런 걸 모르고 자기 의지로 악을 행하며, 주님으로부터 돌아서고, 악과 거짓 가운데 있습니다. 그런데도 그는 자기가 오직 주님으로만 말미암아 산다는 걸 모르면서 삽니다. 또 한편으로, 사람은 혼자서는 선을 행할 수도, 주님을 향할 수도 없고, 오직 천사들로 말미암아 합니다. 그리고 이 역시 천사들이 하는 게 아니라 사실은 주님 홀로 하시는 건데요, 그러면서도 사람은 마치 자기가 하는 것처럼 선을 행하고, 주님을 향하는 걸 할 수 있습니다. 이런 사실들은 우리가 가진 감각이나 세상 학문과 지식, 철학 같은 걸로는 결코 이해할 수 없습니다. 이런 걸 가지고 누구더러 컨설팅을 좀 해달라 하면, 이 모든 게 사실임에도 불구, 모조리 부정될 겁니다. 모든 게 다 그렇듯 말입니다. As an illustration take this single example: of himself man cannot but do what is evil, and turn away from the Lord. Yet man does not do these things, but the evil spirits who are with him. Nor do these evil spirits do them, but the evil itself which they have made their own. Nevertheless man does evil and turns himself away from the Lord, and is in fault; and yet he lives only from the Lord. So on the other hand, of himself man cannot possibly do what is good, and turn to the Lord, but this is done by the angels. Nor can the angels do it, but the Lord alone. And yet man is able as of himself to do what is good, and to turn himself to the Lord. These facts can never be apprehended by our senses, memory-knowledge, and philosophy, but if these are consulted will be denied in spite of their truth. And it is the same all through.

[3] 지금까지 들으신 내용으로 분명한 사실은, 믿음의 일들을 감각적인 것들과 세상 학문과 지식으로 컨설팅하는 사람들은 필연적으로 자기 자신을 의심과 부인, 곧 깊은 흑암에 빠지게 하며, 그 결과 결국엔 모든 탐욕 가운데 빠지게 한다는 겁니다. 그 이유는 그들이 거짓된 걸 믿고, 거짓된 걸 행하기 때문이며, 또 그들은 영적이고 천적인 것은 존재하지 않으며, 대신 육체와 세상에 속한 것들만 존재한다고 믿기 때문입니다. 이렇게 저들은 자아와 세상에 속한 모든 걸 사랑하며, 이런 식으로 거짓된 것에서 샘처럼 솟아나는 모든 탐욕과 악을 행하는 것입니다. From what has been said it is evident that those who consult sensuous things and memory-knowledges in matters of belief, plunge themselves not only into doubt, but also into denial, that is, into thick darkness, and consequently into all cupidities. For as they believe what is false, they also do what is false. And as they believe that what is spiritual and celestial has no existence, so they believe that there is nothing else but what is of the body and the world. And so they love all that belongs to self and the world, and in this way do cupidities and evils spring from what is false.

오늘날은 그러나 이전 시대에 비해 훨씬 더 상황이 악화되었습니다. 고대인에게는 알려지지 않았던 새로운 과학 지식을 포함, 여러 학문 관련 지식들 때문에 사람들이 이제는 감각마저 불신하게 된 건데요, 이로 인해 형언할 수 없는 어두움이 시작되었습니다. At this day, however, it is much worse than in former times, because men can now confirm the incredulity of the senses by memory-knowledges unknown to the ancients, and this has given birth to an indescribable degree of darkness.

※ 과학 혁명의 토대가 되어 중세와 근대를 이어주게 된 소위 르네상스 시대(대략 14세기에서 16세기 말)를 지나며 그동안 감각이 낳은 온갖 회의론마저 돋보기와 현미경으로 들여다보기 시작했다는 말입니다.

만약 사람들이 이 어두움의 엄청난 실상을 알면 아마 기절할 만큼 놀라들 자빠질 겁니다. If men knew how great is the darkness from this cause they would be astounded.

홍수 전 있었던 태고교회의 악, 뿐만 아니라 홍수 후인 고대교회의 악, 그리고 또 유대교회의 악, 계속해서 새 교회, 즉 주님 오신 후 시작된 이방교회의 악, 그리고 오늘날 현 교회의 악까지, 이 모든 악은 주님이나 주님의 말씀 대신 자신과 자신의 오운에 속한 감각(themselves and their own senses)을 믿은, 그리고 지금도 믿고 있는 것입니다. 이런 이유로 지금은 신앙이라는 게 전혀 없으며, 신앙이 전혀 없는 곳에 이웃 사랑 역시 전혀 없고, 결과적으로 지금은 모든 것이 거짓이요 악입니다. The evil of the most ancient church which existed before the flood, as well as that of the ancient church after the flood, and also that of the Jewish church, and subsequently the evil of the new church, or church of the Gentiles, after the coming of the Lord, and also that of the church of the present day, was and is that they do not believe the Lord or the Word, but themselves and their own senses. Hence there is no faith, and where there is no faith there is no love of the neighbor, consequently all is false and evil.

이들 네 번째 후손의 지배적인 악은 자기 사랑이었으며, 동시에 세상 사랑은 오늘날만큼은 아니었습니다. 그들의 생활권이 그들 소유의 가정과 권속들 내였기 때문이며, 부를 축적하고자 하는 열망도 없었기 때문입니다. The ruling evil of this posterity was the love of self, without their having at the same time so much of the love of the world as exists at the present day; for they dwelt within their own households and families, and had no desire to accumulate wealth.

이 구절들이 의미하는 바는 앞서 설명되어온 내용으로 분명한데요, 즉 인간 이성(the rational of man, 합리)이 오운(own)으로 말미암아 속임을 당하게 되었다는 것입니다. 이 오운은 인간 자신에게 무척 소중, 이걸 자기 사랑(the love of self)이라고 하는데, 그는 자기가 직접 보고 느낄 수 있는 거 말고는 아무것도 안 믿었기 때문입니다. 모두가 알 수 있는 사실은, 여호와 하나님은 뱀한테는 말씀하지 않으셨다는 것, 실제로 뱀이라는 건 존재하지도, ‘뱀’(the serpent)으로 상징된 감각적인 걸 특정하지도 않으셨다는 것이며, 대신 이 구절들에는 어떤 다른 의미가 들어 있는데, 그것은 자신들이 이들 감각으로 인해 속았음을 지각했다는 것, 하지만 그럼에도 불구, 자기 사랑의 결과, 그들은 주님과 주님 신앙에 관해 귀로 들어온 것들의 사실 여부를 먼저 좀 확인할 수 있기를 원했다는 것입니다. 자신들이 그걸 믿기 전에 말입니다. The signification of these words is evident from what has been explained before, namely, that the rational of man suffered itself to be deceived by its own, because this was dear to him (that is, by the love of self), so that he believed nothing but what he could see and feel. Everyone can see that Jehovah God did not speak to a serpent, and indeed that there was no serpent, neither did he address the sensuous part that is signified by the “serpent”; but that these words involve a different meaning, namely, that they perceived themselves to be deluded by the senses, and yet, in consequence of self-love, were desirous of ascertaining the truth of what they had heard concerning the Lord, and concerning faith in him, before they believed it.
