한 공동체 안의 구성원은 하나로 움직이므로 구성원이 많으면 많을수록 그 사회는 더 완벽한 사람 형태를 갖춘다. 앞에서 말한 대로, 천국 형태를 이룬 다양성에서 완벽성이 나오며, 다양성은 다수로 이루어지기 때문이다. 더욱이, 천국의 모든 사회는 나날이 그 구성원이 늘어나기 때문에, 나날이 더 완벽해진다. 따라서 각 공동체뿐 아니라 공동체들로 이루어진 천국 전체도 나날이 더 완벽해지는 것이다. 이것을 보면, 천국이 가득 차서 닫힌다는 생각이 얼마나 잘못된 것인지 알 수 있다. 사실은 그 반대로, 천국은 결코 닫히지 않으며, 한없이 채워지고, 그럴수록 더 완벽해지는 것이다. 그래서 천사들이 가장 바라는 것은, 새로운 사람이 천국에 들어와 천사가 되는 것이다. It is worthy of mention that the greater the number in any society in heaven and the more these make a one, the more perfect is its human form, for variety arranged in a heavenly form is what constitutes perfection, as has been shown above (n. 56), and number gives variety. Moreover, every society of heaven increases in number daily, and as it increases it becomes more perfect. Thus not only the society becomes more perfect, but also heaven in general, because it is made up of societies. As heaven gains in perfection by increase of numbers, it is evident how mistaken those are who believe that heaven may be closed by becoming full; for the opposite is true, that it will never be closed, but is perfected by greater and greater fullness. Therefore, the angels desire nothing so much as to have new angel guests come to them.

또 밝혀둘 것은, 어느 공동체가 한 단위로 보일 때, 반드시 사람의 모습이지만, 결코 한 공동체도 다른 공동체와 똑같이 생기지 않았다는 것이다. 앞에서 밝힌 대로, 그들의 선이 각기 다르고, 그에 따라 형태가 결정되기 때문에, 한 가족도 얼굴이 다 다르듯이 공동체들도 다 다르다. 가장 내적이고 높은 천국의 공동체들, 그 중에서도 가장 중심에 있는 공동체들은 가장 완벽하고 아름다운 사람 모습이다. It must be understood that although all in a heavenly society when seen together as one appear in the likeness of a man; yet no one society is just such a man as another. Societies differ from one another like the faces of different individuals of the same family, for the reason given above (n. 47), that is, they differ in accordance with the varieties of good in which they are and which determines their form. The societies of the inmost or highest heaven, and in the center there, are those that appear in the most perfect and beautiful human form.

나는 또 주께서 어느 천사 공동체에 몸소 당신을 나타내 보이실 때, 그 사회 전체가 한 사람으로 보이는 것을 목격할 수 있었다. 동쪽 높은 곳에서 작은 별들로 둘러싸인 구름 같은 것이 눈부신 흰색에서 점점 붉은색으로 변하며 내려왔다. 그것이 여러 단계를 거치며 내려오면서 점점 밝아지다가 나중에는 완전한 사람 모습이 되었다. 구름 둘레의 작은 별들은 주님의 빛을 받은 천사들이 그렇게 보인 것이다. I have also been permitted to see that an entire angelic society, where the Lord is visibly present, appears as a one in the human form. There appeared on high toward the east something like a cloud, from glowing white becoming red, and with little stars round about, which was descending; and as it gradually descended it became brighter, and at last appeared in a perfect human form. The little stars round about the cloud were angels, who so appeared by virtue of light from the Lord.

나는 천국의 각 공동체가 한 사람인 것을 자주 보았다. 빛의 천사로 가장하는 위선적인 영들이 많이 잠입해 들어가는 어떤 공동체가 있었다. 이 영들이 천사들로부터 분리되는 과정을 보면, 처음엔 그 공동체 전체가 어렴풋이 하나의 몸으로 보이고, 다음엔 사람 비슷한 형태로 되다가 나중에 분명한 사람 모습이 된다. 이때 그 사람 형태 안에 포함되어 그 사람 형태를 이루는 이들은 그 사회의 선이 있는 천사들이고, 그렇지 못한 이들은 위선자들이었다. 그렇게 해서 분리가 이루어졌다. 위선자들은 말과 행동이 선하지만, 매사에 자기 자신을 위하는 사람들이다. 그들은 주님과 천국, 사랑과 천국 생활에 대해 천사처럼 말하고, 그 말과 같이 보이려고 바르게 행동하지만, 생각은 다르며, 자기만을 믿고 자기만 잘되기를 바란다. 그들의 선한 행동은 보이기 위한 것이므로 남이 아니라 자기를 위한 것이다. I have frequently been permitted to see that each society of heaven reflects a single man, and is in the likeness of a man. There was a society into which several had insinuated themselves who knew how to counterfeit angels of light. These were hypocrites. When these were being separated from the angels I saw that the entire society appeared at first like a single indistinct body, then by degrees in a human form, but still indistinctly, and at last clearly as a man. Those that were in that man and made up the man were such as were in the good of that society; the others who were not in the man and did not make up the man were hypocrites; these were cast out and the former were retained; and thus a separation was effected. Hypocrites are such as talk well and also do well, but have regard to themselves in everything. They talk as angels do about the Lord, heaven, love, and heavenly life, and also act rightly, so that they may appear to be what they profess to be. But their thinking is different; they believe nothing; and they wish good to none but themselves. Their doing good is for the sake of self, or if for the sake of others it is only for the appearance, and thus still for the sake of self.

천국이 ‘가장 큰 사람’(the greatest man)임을 밝힌 이유는, 이것을 먼저 알지 않으면, 앞으로 천국에 대해 설명하는 것을 이해할 수 없기 때문이다. 또 천국의 형상에 대한 분명한 개념도 가질 수 없고, 주님과 천국 간의 결합이나 천국과 사람 간의 결합, 또 영계에서 자연계로 흘러드는 입류나 상응에 대한 것도 전혀 이해할 수 없다. 앞으로 이 모든 주제를 다루기 위해서 그 전체로 천국의 형태를 미리 설명한 것이다. These things about heaven as the greatest man are set forth, because what follows in regard to heaven cannot be at all comprehended until these things are known, neither can there be any clear idea of the form of heaven, of the conjunction of the Lord with heaven, of the conjunction of heaven with man, of the influx of the spiritual world into the natural, or any idea at all of correspondence—subjects to be treated of in their proper order in what now follows. To throw some light on these subjects, therefore, the above has been premised.

천국 가기 전 단계에 있는 영들은 천국이 위에만이 아니라 아래에도 있다는 말에 놀란다. 그들도 세상에 사는 사람들처럼, 천국은 위에만 있다고 믿기 때문이다. 그들은 천국의 위치는, 사람의 사지와 내장 기관처럼 위아래로 되어 있고, 또 사지와 내장 기관의 부위들처럼 내부와 외부로 이루어져 있음을 모르고 있다. 따라서 그들은 혼동된 천국 개념을 갖고 있는 것이다. The spirits that are beneath heaven are greatly astonished when they hear that heaven is not only above but below, for they have a like faith and opinion as men in the world, that heaven is nowhere but above, for they do not know that the arrangement of the heavens is like the arrangement of the members, organs, and viscera in man, some of which are above and some below; or like the arrangement of the parts in each of the members, organs, and viscera, some of which are within and some without. Hence their confused notions about heaven.

천국 전체가 한 사람으로 보이고, 가장 큰 형태의 신적, 영적인 사람(a Divine spiritual man) 모습이기 때문에, 천국에도 사람에게 있는 모든 지체와 기관들이 같은 이름으로 존재한다. 천사들은 어느 공동체가 신체의 어느 부분에 속하는지 알고 있다. 그들은, 이 공동체는 머리에, 또는 머리의 어느 부위에 속한다, 저 공동체는 가슴에, 또는 가슴 어느 기관에 속한다, 아니면 허리와 허리 어디에 속한다는 식으로 말한다. 전체를 보면, 삼층천이 머리부터 목까지를 형성하고, 이층천이 가슴에서 허리와 무릎까지, 그리고 일층천은 발과 발바닥, 팔에서 손가락까지를 이룬다. 팔과 손은 옆에 달려 있어도 사람의 말단이기 때문이다. 이것을 보아도 세 층의 천국이 있는 이유를 알 수 있다. As the whole heaven reflects a single man, and is a Divine spiritual man in the largest form, even in figure, so heaven like a man is arranged into members and parts, and these are similarly named. Moreover, angels know in what member this or that society is. This society, they say, is in a certain part or province of the head, that in a certain part or province of the breast, that in a certain part or province of the loins, and so on. In general, the highest or third heaven forms the head down to the neck; the middle or second heaven forms the breast down to the loins and knees; the lowest or first heaven forms the feet down to the soles, and also the arms down to the fingers. For the arms and hands belong to the lowest parts of man, although at the sides. From this again it is plain why there are three heavens.

사람 안에 있는 많은 부분이 하나로 움직이는 것은, 사람 안에 있는 것은 모두 전체의 유익을 위해 뭔가 기여하고, 쓰임새 없는 것이 하나도 없기 때문이다. 전체는 부분들로 구성되고, 부분은 전체를 이루기 때문에, 전체는 부분을 위한, 부분은 전체를 위한 쓰임새를 수행한다. 그러므로 양쪽은 서로에게 필요한 것을 공급하고, 서로를 목적으로 삼으며, 모든 부분이 합동해서 각기 전체와 전체의 유익에 참여하는 형태를 이루어 낸다. 그 결과, 모든 부분이 하나로 움직이는 것이다. So many different things in man act as a one, because there is no least thing in him that does not do something for the general welfare and perform some use. The general performs a use for its parts, and the parts for the general, for the general is composed of the parts and the parts constitute the general; therefore they provide for each other, have regard for each other, and are joined together in such a form that each thing and all things have reference to the general and its good; thus it is that they act as one.

[2] 천국들 간에도 이런 연합이 이루어진다. 천국에서는 모두 그 쓰임새에 따라 같은 형태를 이루고 있다. 그러므로 공동체에서 쓰임새를 수행하지 않는 자는 이질적이므로 천국에서 추방된다. 쓰임새를 수행한다는 것은 전체의 공동유익을 위해 타인에게 선한 의도로 행하는 것을 말한다. 쓰임새를 수행하지 않는다는 것은 타인에게 선한 의도로 행하기는 하지만, 전체의 유익을 생각해서가 아니라 자기를 목적으로 하는 것이다. 후자는 모든 것보다 자기를 가장 사랑하는 사람이며, 전자는 주님을 가장 사랑하는 사람이다. 이렇게 천국에서는 모두가 하나로 움직이는데, 그것은 주님으로 말미암는 것이지, 천사들 스스로 하는 것이 아니다. 그들은 주님을 모든 것의 유일한 원천으로 바라보고, 주님 나라를 그 유익을 추구해야 할 사회로 삼기 때문이다. 이것을 주님은 성서에서 이렇게 말씀하셨다. In the heavens there are like affiliations. Those there are conjoined according to uses in a like form; and consequently those who do not perform uses for the common good are cast out of heaven as something heterogeneous. To perform use is to will well to others for the sake of the common good; but to will well to others not for the sake of the common good but for the sake of self is not to perform use. These latter are such as love themselves supremely, while the former are such as love the Lord supremely. Thence it is that those who are in heaven act as a one; and this they do from the Lord, not from themselves, for they look to him as the Only One, the source of all things, and they regard his kingdom as the general, the good of which is to be sought. This is what is meant by the Lord’s words,

그런즉 너희는 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더하시리라 (마6:33) Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all things shall be added unto you (Matt. 6:33).

‘그의 의를 구한다는 것’은 주님의 선을 구하는 것이다.주62 “To seek his righteousness” means to seek his good.62

주62. 말씀에서 ‘의’(義, righteousness)는 선으로, ‘공도’(公道, judgment)는 진리로 서술된다. 그러므로 ‘의와 공도를 행하는 것’(to do righteousness and judgment, 창18:19)은 선하고 참된 것을 행하는 것이다. In the Word “righteousness” is predicated of good, and “judgment” of truth; therefore “to do righteousness and judgment” is to do what is good and true (n. 2235, 9857).

내가 그로 그 자식과 권속에게 명하여 여호와의 도를 지켜 의와 공도를 행하게 하려고 그를 택하였나니 이는 나 여호와가 아브라함에게 대하여 말한 일을 이루려 함이니라 (창18:19)

[3] 이 세상에서 자기 조국의 유익을 자기 유익보다, 이웃의 유익을 자기 유익보다 더 사랑한 사람은 내세에서 주님의 나라를 구하고 사랑한다. 거기서는 주님의 나라가 조국이기 때문이다. 또 타인에게 행하는 선을 사랑한 사람들은 내세에서는 이웃을 사랑한다. 천국에서는 선이 이웃이기 때문이다.주63 그런 사람들은 모두 ‘가장 큰 사람’ 안에, 즉 천국에 있다. Those who in the world love their country’s good more than their own, and their neighbor’s good as their own, are they who in the other life love and seek the Lord’s kingdom; for there the Lord’s kingdom takes the place of country; and those who love doing good to others, not with self as an end but with good as an end, love the neighbor; for in heaven good is the neighbor.63 All such are in the greatest man, that is, heaven.

주63. 가장 높은 뜻으로는, 주님은 이웃이시며, 그래서 결과적으로는, 주님을 사랑하는 것은 주님으로 말미암은 것들을 사랑하는 것, 즉 선과 진리를 사랑하는 것이다. 주님은 주님으로 말미암은 모든 것 가운데 계시기 때문이다. In the highest sense the Lord is the neighbor; consequently to love the Lord is to love that which is from Him, that is to love good and truth because the Lord is in everything that is from Him (n. 2425, 3419, 6706, 6711, 6819, 6823, 8123). 그런 까닭에, 주님으로 말미암은 모든 선이 이웃이며, 그 선을 의도하고 행하는 것이 이웃을 사랑하는 것이다. Therefore all good that is from the Lord is the neighbor, and to will and do that good is to love the neighbor (n. 5028, 10336).

천국의 형상이 그렇기 때문에, 천국은 주님에 의해 단 한 사람처럼, 즉 한 단위로 다스려진다. 잘 알려진 대로 사람은 전체나 각 세부나 무수히 다양한 부분들로 이루어졌다. 전체는 사지와 기관과 내장들로, 그리고 각 부분은 섬유와 신경과 혈관으로 되어 있어 지체 안에 지체가, 부분 안에 부분이 있다. 그럼에도 사람은 한 사람으로 움직인다. 이와 같이 천국도 주님의 감찰과 인도하심에 따라 하나로 움직이는 것이다. Heaven being such, it is ruled by the Lord as a single man is ruled, thus as a one. For although man, as we know, consists of an innumerable variety of parts, not only as a whole but also in each part—as a whole, of members, organs, and viscera; and in each part, of series of fibers, nerves, and blood vessels, thus of members within members, and of parts within parts— nevertheless, when he acts he acts as a single man. Such likewise is heaven under the auspices and direction of the Lord.

※ 사실 천사들은 천국 전체가 사람 모양으로 되어 있는 것을 볼 수는 없다. 천국 전체는 어떤 천사의 시야에도 다 들어오지 않기 때문이다. 다만 그들은 수천의 천사들로 된 공동체가 멀리서 보면 사람 모양인 것을 때때로 보기 때문에, 그 공동체를 일부로 하는 전체 천국의 모양도 그러하다고 결론짓는다.

사실 천사들은 천국 전체가 사람 모양으로 되어 있는 것을 볼 수는 없다. 천국 전체는 어떤 천사의 시야에도 다 들어오지 않기 때문이다. 다만 그들은 수천의 천사들로 된 공동체가 멀리서 보면 사람 모양인 것을 때때로 보기 때문에, 그 공동체를 일부로 하는 전체 천국의 모양도 그러하다고 결론짓는다. 왜냐하면, 가장 완벽한 형태는, 전체는 부분과 부분은 전체와 똑같이 구성되어 있고, 한 원본의 크고 작은 복사판처럼 그 크기가 다를 뿐이기 때문이다. 그래서 천사들은 신성이 그 모든 것을 그 가장 내적이고, 가장 높은 차원에서 보시기 때문에, 주님의 눈에 천국 전체가 한 형태를 이룬다고 말한다. The angels, it is true, do not see heaven in its whole complex in the human form, for heaven as a whole does not come within view of any angel; but remote societies, consisting of many thousands of angels, they sometimes see as a one in the human form; and from a society, as from a part, they draw their conclusion as to the general, which is heaven. For in the most perfect form generals are like the parts, and parts are like the generals, with simply such a difference as there is between like things of greater or less magnitude; consequently, the angels say that since the Divine from what is inmost or highest sees all things, so in the Lord’s sight heaven as a whole must be in the human form.
