※ 사랑과 신앙을 처음에는 ‘큰 광명체들’(great luminaries)이라고 하시다가, 그다음엔 사랑은 ‘큰 광명체’(greater luminary), 신앙은 ‘작은 광명체’(lesser luminary)라 하시고, 계속해서 사랑에 관해서는 ‘낮을 주관하라’(rule by day), 신앙에 관해서는 ‘밤을 주관하라’(rule by night) 하십니다.

14-17절, 14하나님이 이르시되 하늘의 궁창에 광명체들이 있어 낮과 밤을 나뉘게 하고 그것들로 징조와 계절과 날과 해를 이루게 하라 And God said, Let there be luminaries in the expanse of the heavens, to distinguish between the day and the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and for years. 15또 광명체들이 하늘의 궁창에 있어 땅을 비추라 하시니 그대로 되니라 And let them be for luminaries in the expanse of the heavens, to give light upon the earth; and it was so. 16하나님이 두 큰 광명체를 만드사 큰 광명체로 낮을 주관하게 하시고 작은 광명체로 밤을 주관하게 하시며 또 별들을 만드시고 And God made two great luminaries, the greater luminary to rule by day, and the lesser luminary to rule by night; and the stars. 17하나님이 그것들을 하늘의 궁창에 두어 땅을 비추게 하시며 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens, to give light upon the earth;

사랑과 신앙을 처음에는 ‘큰 광명체들’(great luminaries)이라고 하시다가, 그다음엔 사랑은 ‘큰 광명체’(greater luminary), 신앙은 ‘작은 광명체’(lesser luminary)라 하시고, 계속해서 사랑에 관해서는 ‘낮을 주관하라’(rule by day), 신앙에 관해서는 ‘밤을 주관하라’(rule by night) 하십니다. 이런 것들은 감추어진 아르카나(arcana, 단수 arcanum, 秘義)인데, 특히 종말의 때인 이때 이들에 대한 설명이 주님의 신성하신 자비(the Lord’s Divine mercy)로 허락되었습니다. 이들 아르카나가 종말인 이때 특히 더 봉인된 이유는, 지금이 시대의 끝(the consummation of the age), 곧 사랑이라는 게 아주 희귀하고, 그 결과 신앙이라는 것 또한 아주 희귀한 때이기 때문인데, 주님 친히 복음서에서 이미 다음과 같은 말씀으로 예언하신 것입니다. Love and faith are first called “great luminaries,” and afterwards love is called a “greater luminary,” and faith a “lesser luminary”; and it is said of love that it shall “rule by day,” and of faith that it shall “rule by night.” As these are arcana which are hidden, especially in this end of days, it is permitted of the Lord’s Divine mercy to explain them. The reason why these arcana are more especially concealed in this end of days is that now is the consummation of the age, when there is scarcely any love, and consequently scarcely any faith, as the Lord himself foretold in the evangelists in these words:

그날 환난 후에 즉시 해가 어두워지며 달이 빛을 내지 아니하며 별들이 하늘에서 떨어지며 하늘의 권능들이 흔들리리라 (마24:29) The sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken. (Matt. 24:29)

여기서 ‘해’(sun)는 사랑을 의미하는데 어두워지며, ‘달’(moon)은 신앙을 의미하는데 빛을 내지 않습니다. ‘별들’(stars)은 신앙에 관한 지식들인데 하늘에서 떨어지며, 이들이 곧 ‘하늘의 권능들’(virtues and powers of the heavens)입니다. By the “sun” is here meant love, which is darkened; by the “moon” faith, which does not give light; and by the “stars,” the knowledges of faith, which fall from heaven, and which are the “virtues and powers of the heavens.”

[2] 태고교회(太古, The most ancient church)는 사랑 그 자체 말고는 무슨 다른 신앙을 인식하지도 못했습니다. 천적 천사들(天的, The celestial angels) 또한 사랑의 신앙 말고는 신앙이라는 게 뭔지도 몰랐습니다. 천국 전체가 일종의 사랑의 천국인데요, 천국에서는 사랑의 생명 말고 무슨 다른 생명이라는 건 없기 때문입니다. 여기서 천국의 모든 행복이 시작되는 것이며, 이는 단 한 번도 그 설명이 허락된 적도, 심지어 인류 그 어느 누구도 상상조차 할 수 없었던 것이어서 그래서 정말 엄청난 것입니다. 사랑의 영향 아래 있는 사람들은 마음으로 주님을 사랑하면서도, 또한 다음과 같은 사실을 알고, 선언하고, 지각하기도 하는데요, 그것은 모든 사랑은, 그리고 결과적으로는 모든 생명은, 이 생명은 오직 사랑에만 속한 것이지요, 그리고 그 결과 모든 행복은 오직 주님으로부터만 오며, 자기들한테서는 그 어떤 사랑이나 생명, 행복도 말미암지 않는다는 사실입니다. 주님이 모든 사랑의 근원이시라는 사실은 또한 기록된 대로, 주님의 변모, 변형(變形, transfiguration) 관련, 큰 광명체, 즉 ‘해’(sun)로 설명되었습니다. The most ancient church acknowledged no other faith than love itself. The celestial angels also do not know what faith is except that which is of love. The universal heaven is a heaven of love, for there is no other life in the heavens than the life of love. From this is derived all heavenly happiness, which is so great that nothing of it admits of description, nor can ever be conceived by any human idea. Those who are under the influence of love, love the Lord from the heart, but yet know, declare, and perceive, that all love, and consequently all life—which is of love alone—and thus all happiness, come solely from the Lord, and that they have not the least of love, of life, or of happiness, from themselves. That it is the Lord from whom all love comes was also represented by the great luminary or “sun” at his transfiguration, for it is written:

그들 앞에서 변형되사 그 얼굴이 해 같이 빛나며 옷이 빛과 같이 희어졌더라 (마17:2) His face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. (Matt. 17:2)

내면 가장 깊은 것들이 얼굴로, 그리고 거기서 나오는 것들은 옷으로 상징되는데요, 그래서 주님의 신성(神性, the Lord’s Divine)이 ‘해’(sun), 즉 사랑으로, 주님의 인성(人性, his human)은 ‘빛’(light), 즉 사랑에서 나오는 지혜로 상징된 것입니다. Inmost things are signified by the face, and the things that proceed from them by the raiment. Thus the Lord’s Divine was signified by the “sun,” or love; and his human by the “light,” or wisdom proceeding from love.
