24절, 이같이 하나님이 그 사람을 쫓아내시고 에덴동산 동쪽에 그룹들과 두루 도는 불 칼을 두어 생명 나무의 길을 지키게 하시니라 And he cast out the man; and he made to dwell from the east toward the garden of Eden cherubim, and the flame of a sword turning itself, to keep the way of the tree of lives.

‘두루 도는 불 칼’(the flame of a sword turning itself)이 광적 탐욕과 들러붙은 신념, 곧 신앙의 신비 안으로 들어가기를 무척 원하지만, 바로 다음 순간, 육적, 세속적인 것들을 향해 휩쓸려 버리고 마는, 그런 자아 사랑을 상징한다는 것은, 말씀에서 페이지들을 가득 채울 수도 있을 만큼 많은 인용 구절들을 가지고 확인할 수도 있지만, 여기서는 에스겔에 나오는 몇 구절 가지고만 하고자 합니다. That by the “flame of a sword turning itself” is signified self-love with its insane cupidities and persuasions, which are such that they desire to enter [into the mysteries of faith], but are carried away to corporeal and earthly things, might be confirmed by so many passages from the Word as would fill pages; but we will cite only these from Ezekiel:
9인자야 너는 예언하여 여호와의 말씀을 이같이 말하라 칼이여 칼이여 날카롭고도 빛나도다 10그 칼이 날카로움은 죽임을 위함이요 빛남은 번개 같이 되기 위함이니 우리가 즐거워하겠느냐 내 아들의 규가 모든 나무를 업신여기는도다 14그러므로 인자야 너는 예언하며 손뼉을 쳐서 칼로 두세 번 거듭 쓰이게 하라 이 칼은 죽이는 칼이라 사람들을 둘러싸고 죽이는 큰 칼이로다 15내가 그들이 낙담하여 많이 엎드러지게 하려고 그 모든 성문을 향하여 번쩍번쩍하는 칼을 세워 놓았도다 오호라 그 칼이 번개 같고 죽이기 위하여 날카로웠도다 (겔21:9-10, 14-15) Prophesy and say, Thus saith Jehovah, Say a sword, a sword, it is sharpened, and also burnished to make a sore slaughter; it is sharpened that it may be as lightning. Let the sword be doubled the third time, the sword of his slain; the sword of a great slaughter, which entereth into their bed chambers, that their heart may melt, and their offenses be multiplied, I have set the terror of the sword in all their gates. Alas! it is made as lightning. (Ezek. 21:9–10, 14–15)
여기 ‘칼’(A sword)은 사람의 황폐함, 곧 선과 진리는 전혀 못 보고, 대신 ‘많이 엎드러지게 하다’(multiplying offenses)라는 표현이 가리키는 대로, 그저 매사를 거짓과 거꾸로만 볼 뿐인 상태, 황폐함을 상징합니다. 또 나훔에도 보면, 거기 신앙의 신비들 안으로 들어가고자 하는 자들을 가리켜, ‘충돌하는 기병, 번쩍이는 칼, 번개 같은 창, 죽임 당한 자의 떼’(The horseman mounting, and the flame of the sword, and the flash of the spear, and a multitude of the slain.)(훔3:3)라 하고 있습니다. A “sword” here signifies the desolation of man such that he sees nothing that is good and true, but mere falsities and things contrary, denoted by “multiplying offenses.” It is also said in Nahum, of those who desire to enter into the mysteries of faith, “The horseman mounting, and the flame of the sword, and the flash of the spear, and a multitude of the slain.” (Nahum 3:3)
충돌하는 기병, 번쩍이는 칼, 번개 같은 창, 죽임 당한 자의 떼, 주검의 큰 무더기, 무수한 시체여 사람이 그 시체에 걸려 넘어지니 (훔3:3)
