8554. 속뜻으로 앞 장에서는 세 번째 시험, 즉 선의 부족(a lack of good)을 다루었다면, 이제 이 장에서는 네 번째 시험, 즉 진리의 부족(a lack of truth)을 다룹니다. ‘물이 없어 이스라엘 자손이 하는 원망’이 바로 이 네 번째 시험을 의미하며, 그 결과 주님은 이들에게 신앙의 진리를 공급하시는데, ‘호렙 반석에서 나오는 물’이 바로 이를 의미합니다. In the preceding chapter, in the internal sense, the third temptation was treated of—that there was a lack of good. This having been given them, in the internal sense in this chapter the fourth temptation is treated of—that there was a lack of truth. This temptation is signified by “the murmuring of the sons of Israel because they had no water”; and therefore the truth of faith was given them by the Lord, which is signified by “the water out of the rock of Horeb.”

 

8555. 그리고 이어서 신앙의 진리와 선을 대항하는, 악으로 말미암는 거짓과의 전투(combat)가 나오는데요, 이 전투를 이스라엘을 대항하는 아말렉(Amalek)과의 싸움(fighting)으로 표현하고 있습니다. 신앙의 진리와 선 안에 있는 사람들은 주님을 바라볼 때 이기고, 아래를 내려다볼 때 진다는 것을 이스라엘 자손이 모세가 손을 들고 있는 한 이기고, 그가 손을 내렸을 때 지는 걸로 표현하고 있습니다. Then follows the combat of the falsity that is from evil against the truth and good of faith, which combat is represented by the fighting of Amalek against Israel. That they who are in the truth and good of faith conquer when they look upward to the Lord, and that they yield when they look downward, is represented by the sons of Israel conquering so long as Moses kept his hands raised, and by their yielding when he let them down.
