사람의 사후, 죽음에서 깨어나 영원한 삶으로 들어가기

THE RESUSCITATION OF MAN FROM DEATH, AND HIS ENTRANCE INTO ETERNAL LIFE

 

 

168. 사람이 어떻게 육체의 삶(the life of the body)에서 영생의 삶(the life of eternity)으로 넘어가는지, 그 소생(蘇生, resuscitate), 깨어나는 방법을 사람들이 알 수 있도록 절더러 차례대로 설명하라 하셨는데요, 이것은 제가 그저 듣기만 한 게 아니라 실제 체험을 통해, 그래서 저에게 직접 보여 주신 것입니다. Being permitted to describe in connected order how man passes from the life of the body into the life of eternity, in order that the way in which he is resuscitated might be known, this has been shown me, not by hearing, but by actual experience.

 

 

169. 저는 신체 감각에 있어 어떤 무감각 상태로 가라앉았고, 그래서 죽어가는 사람의 상태와 거의 같아졌지만, 그러나 저의 내적 생명(my interior life)은 손상되지 않았고, 생각하는 능력과 숨을 위한 충분한 호흡은 유지할 수 있었으며, 마침내 어떤 암묵적인 호흡(a tacit breathing) 가운데 있을 수 있었는데요, 이는 저로 하여금 죽은 사람들에게 무슨 일이 일어나며, 어떻게 깨어나는지를 지각하고 기억할 수 있게 하시기 위해서였습니다. I was reduced into a state of insensibility as to the bodily senses, thus almost into the state of dying persons, retaining however my interior life unimpaired, attended with the power of thinking, and with sufficient breathing for life, and finally with a tacit breathing, that I might perceive and remember what happens to those who have died and are being resuscitated.

 

 

170. 심장 영역(the region of the heart)을 차지한 천적 천사들(Celestial angels)이 와있었고, 그래서 심장에 관해서는 저는 그들과 하나 된 것처럼 보였으며, 마침내 생각과 그에 따른 지각을 제외하고는 저에게 남은 것이 거의 없었는데요, 이런 상태가 몇 시간 동안 계속되었습니다. Celestial angels were present who occupied the region of the heart, so that as to the heart I seemed united with them, and so that at length scarcely anything was left to me except thought, and the consequent perception, and this for some hours.

 

 

171. 그래서 저는 영들의 세계(the world of spirits)에 있는 영들하고의 커뮤니케이션이 중단되었는데요, 그들은 제가 육체의 삶에서 떠났다고 생각한 영들이었습니다. I was thus removed from communication with spirits in the world of spirits, who supposed that I had departed from the life of the body.  

 

※ 지상의 모든 사람에겐 중간 영계, 즉 영들의 세계에서 와 있는 선한 영 둘, 악한 영 둘이 있는데요, 살아있는 모든 사람의 머릿속에 떠오르는 생각은 사실은 이들이 하는 것이며, 이들이 있어서 사람은 지상에 있을 때에도 영계와 연결이 되어 있고, 그래서 주님과 연결되어 있을 수 있는 것입니다. 이것을 위에서는 ‘영들의 세계에 있는 영들하고의 커뮤니케이션’이라고 표현했네요.

 

 

172. 천적 천사들, 심장(the heart)에 있는 천적 천사들 외에도 두 천사가 제 머리(my head)에 앉아 있었습니다. 다른 모든 사람들의 경우도 다 이렇다는 사실이 제게 지각되었습니다. Besides the celestial angels, who occupied the region of the heart, there were also two angels sitting at my head, and it was given me to perceive that it is so with everyone.

 

 

173. 제 머리에 앉아 있는 천사들은 완전한 침묵 가운데 얼굴로만 그들의 생각을 전할 뿐이었는데요, 저로 하여금 제 위에 온 것 같은 또 다른 얼굴(another face)이 있음을 지각할 수 있게 하기 위해서였지요. 실제로는 둘이었습니다. 거기 천사가 둘 있었기 때문입니다. 천사들은 자신들의 얼굴이 받아들여지는 걸 보면서, 이 사람이 죽었음을 압니다. The angels who sat at my head were perfectly silent, merely communicating their thoughts by the face, so that I could perceive that another face was as it were induced upon me; indeed two, because there were two angels. When the angels perceive that their faces are received, they know that the man is dead.  

 

※ 즉, 아직 심장과 폐가 멈추질 않아 아직 죽은 상태가 아니면 사람은 천사 같은 영적 존재를 알아볼 수 없기 때문입니다.

 

 

174. 자신들의 얼굴이 인식되자 그들은 입 주변에 어떤 변화를(certain changes about the region of the mouth) 주더니 그것으로 자신들의 생각을 전했습니다. 천적 천사들은 그렇게 입과 관련된 걸로(by the province of the mouth) 말하는 게 관례이기 때문이며, 저에게는 그들의 생각에 잠긴 듯 말하는 스피치(their cogitative speech) 지각하는 게 허용되었기 때문입니다. After their faces had been recognized, they induced certain changes about the region of the mouth, and thus communicated their thoughts, for it is customary with the celestial angels to speak by the province of the mouth, and it was permitted me to perceive their cogitative speech.

 

 

175. 방부 처리된 시신에서 나는 것 같은, 무슨 향기로운 냄새가 났습니다. 이는 천적 천사들이 있는 곳에서는 시신 냄새가 마치 향기처럼 인식되기 때문인데요, 이런 향기가 나면 악령들은 가까이 다가올 수가 없기 때문입니다. An aromatic odor was perceived, like that of an embalmed corpse, for when the celestial angels are present, the cadaverous odor is perceived as if it were aromatic, which when perceived by evil spirits prevents their approach.  

 

※ 성인전을 읽다 보면 이런 비슷한 장면들이 나오는데요, 가령, 성 분도 요셉 라브르의 경우라든지, 성 리드비나의 경우가 그렇습니다. 이분들의 시신 및 그 묘지 주위에 오랫동안 향기가 머물렀다는 증언들이 있는데요, 위 기록은 영계에서 일어나는 일 같은데 가끔 이렇게 그 효과가 지상의 시신이나 묘지에까지 나타나기도 하는 모양입니다. 이분들의 시신 및 묘지에 천적 천사들이 찾아와서 나는 향기였다면 말입니다.

 

 

176. 한편, 저는 심장 주위(the region of the heart)가 천적 천사들과 함께 굉장히 가깝게 결합된 상태라는 걸 지각했는데요, 그건 심장의 펄스, 고동으로부터 분명했습니다. Meanwhile I perceived that the region of the heart was kept very closely united with the celestial angels, as was also evident from the pulsation.

 

 

177. 죽음의 순간에 사람은 그가 품고 있던 경건하고 거룩한 생각에 머물러 있도록 천사들이 지키고 있음이 제게 불어넣어졌는데요(It was instilled to me), 다음 사실과 함께 말입니다. 그것은 임종 중인 사람들(those who are dying)은 보통 영생(eternal life)에 대한 생각을 하지, 구원과 행복에 대해서는 아니라는 것과, 그래서 천사들은 그들이 영생에 대한 생각 안에 있도록 지킨다는 것입니다. It was instilled to me that man is kept engaged by the angels in the pious and holy thoughts which he entertained at the point of death; and it was also instilled that those who are dying usually think about eternal life, and seldom of salvation and happiness, and therefore the angels keep them in the thought of eternal life.

 

 

178. 그들은 천적 천사들(the celestial angels)이 떠나기 전까지 천사들에 의해 상당히 오랜 시간, 이 생각 안에 머물러 있는데요, 그러고 나서 이 사람들은 소생, 깨어나게 됩니다. 이때 이들은 이제 영적 천사들(the spiritual angels)에게 연결되고, 영적 천사들이 와서 이들을 돌보게 되지요. 한편, 이 사람들은 여전히 자기는 지금 몸 안에(in the body) 있다는 희미한 생각 가운데 있습니다. In this thought they are kept for a considerable time by the celestial angels before these angels depart, and those who are being resuscitated are then left to the spiritual angels, with whom they are next associated. Meanwhile they have a dim idea that they are living in the body.

 

 

179. 시신(the internal parts of the body)이 차가워지자마자 생명력들(the vital substances)이 그 사람한테서 분리되는데요, 그게 어디에 있든, 심지어 천 갈래 복잡한 미로 속에 숨어 있다 하더라도 말입니다. 바로 이런 게 주님의 자비가 지닌 능력(the efficacy of the Lord’s mercy)인데요, 전에 제가 ‘아, 이런 게 살아있다는 거구나,’ 지각하며, 굉장히 제 마음을 사로잡았던 능력, 효력이지요. 이 능력은 쓸데없이 아무 데나 흘리고 다닐 수 있는 게 아니거든요. As soon as the internal parts of the body grow cold, the vital substances are separated from the man, wherever they may be, even if inclosed in a thousand labyrinthine interlacings, for such is the efficacy of the Lord’s mercy (which I had previously perceived as a living and mighty attraction) that nothing vital can remain behind.

 

 

180. 머리에 앉아 있던 천적 천사들은 제가 깨어난 후에도 한동안 저와 함께하며, 그러나 묵시적으로만(only tacitly) 대화했습니다. 그들은 제 안의 모든 오류와 거짓을 보고도 그걸 조롱하는 대신 전혀 신경 쓰지 않는 듯 빙그레 웃으며 가볍게 여기고 있음이 그들 특유의 생각에 잠긴 듯 말하는 스피치에서 지각되었는데요, 그들의 스피치는 생각에 잠긴 듯 하는, 소리는 안 나는(cogitative, devoid of sound) 말이며, 이런 종류의 언어로 그들은 이런 처음 상태에 있는 영혼들과 말하기 시작합니다. The celestial angels who sat at the head remained with me for some time after I was as it were resuscitated, but they conversed only tacitly. It was perceived from their cogitative speech that they made light of all fallacies and falsities, smiling at them not indeed as matters for derision, but as if they cared nothing about them. Their speech is cogitative, devoid of sound, and in this kind of language they begin to speak with the souls with whom they are at first present.

 

 

181. 이렇게 천적 천사들에 의해 소생된 이 사람은 아직은 희미한 생명(an obscure life)만을 소유하고 있습니다. 이 상태에서 다음 순서로 그는 영적 천사들에게 인도되는데요, 약간의 딜레이 후, 천적 천사들은 영적 천사들이 온(have approached) 걸 보고 나서 이 사람한테서 떠납니다. 그리고 이후 제가 본 것은 이 사람이 빛의 혜택(the benefit of light)을 받을 수 있도록 영적 천사들이 어떻게 하는지에 관한 건데요, 이에 대한 설명은 다음 장 도입부에서 같은 주제로 계속되고 있습니다. As yet the man, thus resuscitated by the celestial angels, possesses only an obscure life; but when the time comes for him to be delivered to the spiritual angels, then after a little delay, when the spiritual angels have approached, the celestial depart; and it has been shown me how the spiritual angels operate in order that the man may receive the benefit of light, as described in the continuation of this subject prefixed to the following chapter.
