세 번째 상태는 회개(repentance) 상태입니다. 이 상태에서 사람은 속 사람으로부터 경건하고 독실하게 말하며, 체어리티(charity, 이웃 사랑, 인애, 자선, 기부 등)와 같은 선을 행합니다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구, 거기에는 생명이 없는데, 그 이유는 그가 이 모든 걸 자기가 하는 걸로 생각하기 때문입니다. 즉 그 공을 자신에게 돌리기 때문이지요. ‘이런 말을 하고, 이런 행위를 하다니 아, 나는 참 괜찮은 사람이야...’ 하면서 말이지요. 이런 선을 ‘풀’(tender grass), ‘씨 맺는 채소’(herb yielding seed), 그리고 나중에는 ‘열매 맺는 나무’(tree bearing fruit)라고 합니다. The third state is that of repentance, in which the man, from his internal man, speaks piously and devoutly, and brings forth goods, like works of charity, but which nevertheless are inanimate, because he thinks they are from himself. These goods are called the “tender grass,” and also the “herb yielding seed,” and afterwards the “tree bearing fruit.”
