두 번째 상태는 주님에게 속한 것들과 사람에게나 어울리는 것들 사이 구별이 생기는 때입니다. 주님에게 속한 것들을 ‘리메인스’(remains)라 하는데, 여기서는 특별히 신앙 관련 지식들, 그러니까 유아기 때부터 배워 온, 그리고 그렇게 차곡차곡 쌓인, 그러나 사람이 이 상태에 이를 때까지는 드러나지 않는, 그런 신앙 지식들을 말합니다. 오늘날엔 이 상태는 쉽게 보기 어려운데요, 몸과 세상에 속한 것들, 그러니까 인간한테나 어울리는 이런 일시적인 것들에 푹 빠져 정신 못 차리고 살다가 인생의 큰 시험이나 불행, 혹은 큰 슬픔을 만나면 그제서야 그런 삶이 마치 죽어버리기라도 한 듯 멈추고, 정신이 번쩍 들기 때문입니다. 이때 겉 사람(the external man)에게 속한 것들이 속 사람(the internal man)에게 속한 것들로부터 분리됩니다. 즉 일시적인 것, 썩어 없어질 물질적인 것들의 정체를 깨닫게 되는 때이지요. 이 속 사람 안에 앞서 말한 리메인스가 있는데, 이것은 주님이 이때, 그러니까 이 두 번째 상태 때 쓰시려고 그의 속 사람 안에 두신 것들입니다. The second state is when a distinction is made between those things which are of the Lord, and those which are proper to man. The things which are of the Lord are called in the word “remains,” and here are especially knowledges of faith, which have been learned from infancy, and which are stored up, and are not manifested until the man comes into this state. At the present day this state seldom exists without temptation, misfortune, or sorrow, by which the things of the body and the world, that is, such as are proper to man, are brought into quiescence, and as it were die. Thus the things which belong to the external man are separated from those which belong to the internal man. In the internal man are the remains, stored up by the Lord unto this time, and for this use.
