11-12절, 11첫째의 이름은 비손이라 금이 있는 하윌라 온 땅을 둘렀으며 12그 땅의 금은 순금이요 그곳에는 베델리엄과 호마노도 있으며 The name of the first is Pishon; that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is good; there is bdellium and the onyx stone.

신앙의 진리는 말씀에서 ‘보석’(precious stones)으로 상징, 표상되는데요, 판결 흉패(the breastplate of judgment)와 아론의 에봇 어깨받이(the shoulders of Aaron’s ephod)에 있는 보석들처럼 말이지요. 흉패 관련, ‘금 실과 청색 자색 홍색 실과 가늘게 꼰 베 실’(gold, blue, bright crimson, scarlet double-dyed, and fine-twined linen)은 사랑에 속한 것들을, 거기 물릴 ‘보석들’(the precious stones)은 사랑에서 나오는 신앙에 속한 것들을 표상합니다. 에봇 어깨받이 위 두 ‘기념 보석’(the two stones of memorial), 곧 금테에 물린 호마노들이 그런 것처럼 말입니다. (출28:9-22) The truth of faith is signified and represented in the Word by precious “stones,” as by those in the breastplate of judgment, and on the shoulders of Aaron’s ephod. In the breastplate, “gold, blue, bright crimson, scarlet double-dyed, and fine-twined linen,” represented such things as are of love, and the precious “stones” such as are of faith from love; as did likewise the two “stones of memorial” on the shoulders of the ephod, which were onyx stones, set in ouches of gold (Exod. 28:9–22).

 

9호마노 두 개를 가져다가 그 위에 이스라엘 아들들의 이름을 새기되 10그들의 나이대로 여섯 이름을 한 보석에, 나머지 여섯 이름은 다른 보석에 새기라 11보석을 새기는 자가 도장에 새김 같이 너는 이스라엘 아들들의 이름을 그 두 보석에 새겨 금 테에 물리고 12그 두 보석을 에봇의 두 어깨받이에 붙여 이스라엘 아들들의 기념 보석을 삼되 아론이 여호와 앞에서 그들의 이름을 그 두 어깨에 메워서 기념이 되게 할지며 13너는 금으로 테를 만들고 14순금으로 노끈처럼 두 사슬을 땋고 그 땋은 사슬을 그 테에 달지니라 15너는 판결 흉패를 에봇 짜는 방법으로 금 실과 청색 자색 홍색 실과 가늘게 꼰 베 실로 정교하게 짜서 만들되 16길이와 너비가 한 뼘씩 두 겹으로 네모 반듯하게 하고 17그것에 네 줄로 보석을 물리되 첫 줄은 홍보석 황옥 녹주옥이요 18둘째 줄은 석류석 남보석 홍마노요 19셋째 줄은 호박 백마노 자수정이요 20넷째 줄은 녹보석 호마노 벽옥으로 다 금 테에 물릴지니 21이 보석들은 이스라엘 아들들의 이름대로 열둘이라 보석마다 열두 지파의 한 이름씩 도장을 새기는 법으로 새기고 22순금으로 노끈처럼 땋은 사슬을 흉패 위에 붙이고 (출28:9-22)

 

이 보석들이 상징하는 바 또한 에스겔을 보면 분명한데요, 거기 천국의 부(heavenly riches), 곧 지혜와 지성을 소유한 사람에 대해 말하면서 이르기를 This signification of precious stones is also plain from Ezekiel, where, speaking of a man possessed of heavenly riches, which are wisdom and intelligence, it is said:

 

12인자야 두로 왕을 위하여 슬픈 노래를 지어 그에게 이르기를 주 여호와의 말씀에 너는 완전한 도장이었고 지혜가 충족하며 온전히 아름다웠도다 13네가 옛적에 하나님의 동산 에덴에 있어서 각종 보석 곧 홍보석과 황보석과 금강석과 황옥과 홍마노와 창옥과 청보석과 남보석과 홍옥과 황금으로 단장하였음이여 네가 지음을 받던 날에 너를 위하여 소고와 비파가 준비되었도다, 15네가 지음을 받던 날로부터 네 모든 길에 완전하더니 마침내 네게서 불의가 드러났도다 (겔28:12-13, 15) Full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty, thou hast been in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the ruby, the topaz, the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper; the sapphire, the chrysoprase, the emerald, and gold; the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was in thee; in the day that thou wast created they were prepared; thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, (Ezek. 28:12–13, 15)

 

모두에게 분명한 것은, 위 말씀은 보석들(stones)이 아닌, 신앙의 천적 영적인 것들(the celestial and spiritual things of faith)을 상징한다는 것인데요, 네, 그렇습니다. 이들 각각의 보석은 신앙의 어떤 본질적인 것(some essential of faith)을 표상한 것입니다. which words it must be evident to everyone do not signify stones, but the celestial and spiritual things of faith; yea, each stone represented some essential of faith.
