6절, 여자가 그 나무를 본즉 먹음직도 하고 보암직도 하고 지혜롭게 할 만큼 탐스럽기도 한 나무인지라 여자가 그 열매를 따먹고 자기와 함께 있는 남편에게도 주매 그도 먹은지라 And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to give intelligence, and she took of the fruit thereof and did eat, and she gave also to her man [vir] with her, and he did eat.

‘먹음직도 하고’(Good for food)는 탐욕(cupidity)을, ‘보암직도 하고’(pleasant to the eyes)는 환상(fantasy)을, ‘지혜롭게 할 만큼 탐스럽기도 한’(desirable to give intelligence)은 쾌락(pleasure)을 의미합니다. 이것들은 오운(own), 곧 ‘여자’(woman)에게 속한 것들입니다. ‘그도 먹은지라’(the husband eating)는 이성(the rational)도 동의했음을 의미합니다 (AC.265). “Good for food” signifies cupidity; “pleasant to the eyes,” fantasy; and “desirable to give intelligence,” pleasure: these are of the own, or “woman”; by the “husband eating” is signified the consent of the rational (n. 265).

또 여자에게 이르시되 내가 네게 임신하는 고통을 크게 더하리니 네가 수고하고 자식을 낳을 것이며 너는 남편을 원하고 남편은 너를 다스릴 것이니라 하시고 And unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth sons, and thine obedience shall be to thy man [vir], and he shall rule over thee.

 

내용 중, '남편'(man [vir])에 대한 속뜻입니다.

‘남편’(man [vir])은 본장 6절에서부터 나타나는 이성(理性, the rational, 合理)을 말하는데요, 거기 6절에서 여자는 자기와 함께 있는 남편에게도 주었고, 그도 먹었지요. 이것이 의미하는 건 그도 동의했다는 겁니다. 같은 게 158번 글에 나오는 ‘남자’에 대해 한 말을 봐도 분명한데요, 거기서 그는 지혜롭고 지성적인 사람을 의미합니다. (아직 선악과를 먹기 전, 곧 타락하기 전입니다.) 그러나 여기 ‘남자’(남편)는 그와는 달리 이성(the rational)을 의미하는데, 왜냐하면, 지식의 나무, 곧 선악과를 먹음으로써 지혜와 지성이 파괴된 결과, 더 이상 아무것도 남지 않게 되었기 때문입니다. 이성은 지성의 모방, 말하자면 겉모습이기 때문이지요. That by “man” [vir] is signified the rational appears from verse 6 of this chapter, in that the woman gave to her man with her, and he did eat, by which is meant his consent; and the same is also evident from what was said of the man in n. 158, where by him is meant one who is wise and intelligent. Here however “man” denotes the rational, because in consequence of the destruction of wisdom and intelligence by eating of the tree of knowledge, nothing else was left, for the rational is imitative of intelligence, being as it were its semblance.

 

※ 우리는 인간의 이성이 뭐 대단한 건 줄 알지만, 이성은 사실은 지성이 입는 겉옷입니다. 지성은 지혜가 입는 겉옷이고요. 이 지혜와 지성은 주님으로 말미암는 것입니다. 지혜는 주님의 선으로부터, 지성은 주님의 진리로부터 나오며, 진리는 선이 입는 겉옷입니다. 선악과를 먹기 전 인류는 지혜와 지성의 사람이었지만, 먹은 후에는 이성만 남은 사람이 되고 말았습니다. 선악과를 먹기 전 인간의 이성은 영광스러운 쓰임새 가운데 있었지만, 먹은 후에는 정말 초라한 쓰임새 밖에 남지 않게 되었습니다.
