HH.74, '10장, 천사는 완전한 사람 형태로 있다'(HH.73-77)

※ 이제 경험을 얘기하겠다. 천사가 사람의 모습, 곧 사람이라는 것을 나는 수천 번 보아 왔다. 나는 사람과 대화하듯이 그들과 대화했다. 때로는 한 명과, 때로는 여럿이 함께였는데, 그들의 모습 중 사람과 다른 점은 하나도 보지 못했다.

이제 경험을 얘기하겠다. 천사가 사람의 모습, 곧 사람이라는 것을 나는 수천 번 보아 왔다. 나는 사람과 대화하듯이 그들과 대화했다. 때로는 한 명과, 때로는 여럿이 함께였는데, 그들의 모습 중 사람과 다른 점은 하나도 보지 못했다. 가끔 그들이 사람과 너무 똑같아 놀라곤 했다. 내가 이것을 망상이나 환상으로 여기지 않도록 하기 위해, 내가 완전히 깨어 있을 때, 몸의 모든 감각이 있는 상태에서 또렷한 의식으로 그들을 만나도록 허락된 것이다. Let us now turn to experience. That angels are human forms, or men, has been seen by me a thousand times. I have talked with them as man with man, sometimes with one, sometimes with many together; and I have seen nothing whatever in their form different from the human form; and have occasionally been surprised to find them such. And that this might not be said to be a delusion or a vision of fancy, I have been permitted to see angels when fully awake or in possession of all my bodily senses, and in a state of clear perception.

 

나는 기독교계의 많은 사람들이 천사와 영에 대해 아는 것이 없어, 그들을 형태 없는 혼이나 관념일 뿐이라 믿고 일종의 생명력 있는 기운 정도로 여긴다는 것, 또 천사가 사고 기능 외의 어떤 인간적 요소도 없어 볼 눈이나 들을 귀, 말할 입도 없다고 믿는다는 것을 천사들에게 여러 차례 얘기했다. And I have often told them that men in the Christian world are in such blind ignorance in regard to angels and spirits as to believe them to be minds without form, even pure thoughts, of which they have no idea except as something ethereal in which there is some vitality. And as they thus ascribe to angels nothing human except a thinking faculty, they believe that having no eyes they do not see, having no ears they do not hear, and having no mouth or tongue they do not speak.

 

[2] 그러자 천사들은 세상의 많은 사람들, 특히 지식인들, 심지어 놀랍게도 성직자도 그런 인식을 갖고 있다는 것을 알고 있었다고 했다. 그 원인을 천사들은 이렇게 설명했다. 천사와 영에 대한 그런 관념을 처음 지어낸 지도층 지식인들은 사람의 외면에 속한 감각만으로 미루어 천사와 영을 생각했으며, 사람이 내적 개념, 즉 사람 안에 심어진 보편적 개념에 의하지 않고, 외적인 면으로만 생각할 때 그런 오류를 범할 수밖에 없다. 왜냐하면, 사람의 외면에 있는 감각은 단지 물질계에 속한 것만 받아들이고 그 이상의 것은 지각할 수 없으므로, 영계의 것을 전혀 알 수 없기 때문이다.주69 이 지도자들의 인도로 천사들에 대한 잘못된 인식이, 스스로 생각하지 않고 지도자를 따르는 사람들에게 파급된 것이다. 남의 말을 따라 생각을 정하는 사람들은 그 생각을 신념으로 삼고, 나중에는 이치에 맞는다고 여기게 되어 쉽게 그 생각을 바꾸지 못하므로 대부분 고정관념에 안주한다. To this the angels replied that they are aware that such a belief is held by many in the world, and is prevalent among the learned, and to their surprise, even among the clergy. The reason, they said, is that the learned, who were the leaders and who first concocted such an idea of angels and spirits, conceived of them from the sense conceptions of the external man; and those who think from these, and not from interior light and from the general idea implanted in everyone, must needs fabricate such notions, since the sense conceptions of the external man take in only what belongs to nature, and nothing above nature, thus nothing whatever of the spiritual world.69 From these leaders as guides this falsity of thought about angels extended to others who did not think from themselves but adopted the thoughts of their leaders; and those who first take their thoughts from others and make that thought their belief, and then view it with their own understanding, cannot easily recede from it, and are therefore in most cases satisfied with confirming it.

 

 

주69. 자신의 겉 사람이 가진 감각적 사고를 극복, 더 위로 고양(高揚)되지 않으면 사람은 매우 어리석게 된다. Unless man is raised above the sense conceptions of the external man he has very little wisdom (n. 5089). 지혜로운 사람은 이들 감각적 사고를 극복, 초월하여 생각한다. The wise man thinks above these sense conceptions (n. 5089, 5094). 이런 걸 극복, 위로 오를 수만 있다면, 사람은 더욱 맑고 환한 빛 가운데로 들어가게 되며, 그렇게 해서 결국 천국의 빛 가운데로 들어가게 된다. When man is raised above these, he comes into clearer light, and finally into heavenly light (n. 6183, 6313, 6315, 9407, 9730, 9922). 고대인들은 고양과 이런 것들로부터 물러남에 대해 알고 있었다. Elevation and withdrawal from these was known to the ancients (n. 6313).

 

 

[3] 오히려 신앙과 마음이 단순한 사람들은 천사에 대한 그런 잘못된 인식이 없고, 천사를 하늘에 있는 사람이라고 생각한다고 천사들은 말했다. 그 사람들은 천국으로부터 그들 안에 심겨진 것을 학식으로 없애지 않았고, 형태 없는 것을 이해하지 못하기 때문이다. 그래서 교회의 조각이나 그림에 천사는 언제나 사람으로 묘사되어 있다. ‘천국으로부터 심겨진 것’(this insight from heaven)이란, 신앙과 생활의 선에 따라 사람 안으로 흘러드는 신성이라고 천사들은 설명했다. The angels said, furthermore, that the simple in faith and heart have no such idea about angels, but think of them as the men of heaven, and for the reason that they have not extinguished by learning what is implanted in them from heaven, and have no conception of anything apart from form. This is why angels in churches, whether sculptured or painted, are always depicted as men. In respect to this insight from heaven they said that it is the Divine flowing into such as are in the good of faith and life.
