And the man [homo] called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

By the “man” [homo] is here meant the man of the most ancient church, or the celestial man, and by the “wife” and the “mother of all living” is meant the church.

그녀를 가리켜 ‘어머니’라 하는 이유는, 첫 교회였기 때문입니다. She is called “mother,” as being the first church;

’(living)은 생명 그 자체이신 주님 신앙을 가졌기 때문입니다. and “living,” in consequence of possessing faith in the Lord, who is life itself.

288. ‘아담’이 태고교회인, 혹은 天人을 의미한다는 것은 앞에서 보여드린 내용입니다. That by “man” is meant the man of the most ancient church, or the celestial man, was previously shown;

그리고 동시에 주님 홀로 사람이시며, 모든 天人은 주님을 닮았기 때문에 주님으로 말미암은 사람이라고 부른다는 것 또한 보여드렸습니다. and at the same time it was also shown that the Lord alone is man, and that from him every celestial man is man, because in his likeness.

Hence every member of the church, without exception or distinction, was called a “man,” and at length this name was applied to anyone who in body appeared as a man, to distinguish him from beasts.

289. 또 위에서 이미 보여드린 것은, ‘아내’가 교회를 의미하며, 가장 광의(廣義)로는 하늘과 땅에 있는 주님의 왕국을 의미한다는 것입니다; It has also been shown above that by “wife” is meant the church, and in the universal sense the kingdom of the Lord in the heavens and on earth;

그리고 이런 사실로부터 ‘어머니’ 역시 같은 의미라는 사실 또한 따라 나옵니다. and from this it follows that the same is meant by “mother.

In the Word the church is very frequently called “mother,” as in Isaiah:

Where is the bill of your mother’s divorcement?

In Jeremiah:

Your mother is greatly ashamed; she that bare you was suffused with shame.

In Ezekiel:

Thou art thy mother’s daughter that loathed her man and her sons; your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite, (겔16:45)

여기 ‘남편’[vir]은 주님과 하늘에 있는 모든 것을; where “man” [vir] denotes the Lord and all that is celestial;

자녀’는 신앙의 진리들을; sons,” the truths of faith;

’은 거짓된 것을: ‘아모리’는 악한 것을 가리킵니다. a “Hittite,” what is false: and an “Amorite,” what is evil.

In the same:

Thy mother is like a vine in thy likeness, planted near the waters; she was fruitful and full of leaves because of many waters.

Here “mother” denotes the ancient church.

The term “mother” is more especially applicable to the most ancient church, because it was the first church, and the only one that was celestial, and therefore beloved by the Lord more than any other.

That she was called the “mother of all living” in consequence of possessing faith in the Lord, who is life itself, is also evident from what has been already shown.

There cannot be more than one life, from which is the life of all, and there can be no life, which is life, except through faith in the Lord, who is the life, nor can there be faith in which is life, except from him, consequently unless he is in it.

On this account, in the Word, the Lord alone is called “living,” and is named the “living Jehovah; (렘5:2; 12:16; 16:14, 15; 23:7; 겔5:11)

And though they say, Jehovah lives; still they promise falsely.

And it shall be, if learning they shall learn the ways of My people, to promise by My name, Living Jehovah, as they taught My people to promise by Baal, then shall they be built in the midst of My people.

Therefore, behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that it shall no more be said, Jehovah lives, who brought up the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt; 15이스라엘 자손을 북방 땅과 그 쫓겨났던 모든 나라에서 인도하여 내신 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하리라 내가 그들을 그들의 조상들에게 준 그들의 땅으로 인도하여 들이리라 but, Jehovah lives, who brought up the sons of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands whither He had compelled them; and I will return them onto their ground that I gave unto their fathers.

Therefore, behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that they shall no more say, Jehovah lives, who brought up the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt; (렘23:7)

Therefore, as I live, says the Lord Jehovih, shall it not be, because thou hast defiled My sanctuary with all thy detestable things, and with all thine abominations, that even I shall diminish thee; and My eye shall not spare, and even I will not have pity.

영생하시는 이’로도; he that liveth to eternity; (단4:34; 계4:10; 5:14; 10:6)

And at the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to the heavens, and my knowledge returned to me, and I blessed the Most High and I praised and honored Him who lives to eternity, whose dominion is an eternal dominion, and His kingdom is with generation and generation; (단4:34)

이십사 장로들이 보좌에 앉으신 이 앞에 엎드려 세세토록 살아 계시는 이에게 경배하고 자기의 관을 보좌 앞에 드리며 이르되 the twenty and four elders fell down before Him who sat on the throne, and worshiped Him who lives for ages of ages, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, (계4:10)

And the four animals said, Amen. And the twenty four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives for ages of ages.

세세토록 살아 계신 이 곧 하늘과 그 가운데에 있는 물건이며 땅과 그 가운데에 있는 물건이며 바다와 그 가운데에 있는 물건을 창조하신 이를 가리켜 맹세하여 이르되 지체하지 아니하리니 and swore by Him who lives for ages of ages, who created heaven, and the things in it, and the earth, and the things in it, and the sea, and the things in it, that time shall be no longer.

생명의 원천’으로도; the “fountain of life”; (시36:9)

For with Thee is the spring of lives; In Thy light shall we see light.

생수의 근원’으로도 불리십니다. the “fountain of living waters.

O Jehovah, the hope of Israel, all who forsake Thee shall be ashamed, and they who turn aside away from Me shall be written in the earth, for they have forsaken Jehovah, the spring of living waters.

Heaven (which lives by or from him) is called the “land of the living.

I said, I shall not see Jah, Jah in the land of the living! I shall not look on man any more with the inhabitants of the world!

From restraint and from judgment He was taken; and who shall contemplate His generation? For He was severed from the land of the living; on account of the transgression of My people a plague was upon Him; (사53:8)

내가 너를 구덩이에 내려가는 자와 함께 내려가서 옛적 사람에게로 나아가게 하고 너를 그 구덩이에 내려간 자와 함께 땅 깊은 곳 예로부터 황폐한 곳에 살게 하리라 네가 다시는 사람이 거주하는 곳이 되지 못하리니 살아 있는 자의 땅에서 영광을 얻지 못하리라 and I shall bring thee down with those who go down into the pit, to the people of an age, and shall cause thee to dwell in the lower earth, as in waste places of an age, with those who go down into the pit, so that thou not be dwelt in; and I shall put elegance in the land of the living; (겔26:20)

23그 무덤이 구덩이 깊은 곳에 만들어졌고 그 무리가 그 무덤 사방에 있음이여 그들은 다 죽임을 당하여 칼에 엎드러진 자 곧 생존하는 사람들의 세상에서 사람을 두렵게 하던 자로다 whose graves are put in the flanks of the pit, and her assembly is around her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who put dismay in the land of the living. Elam is there, and all her crowd around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who have gone down uncircumcised to the lower earth, who put their dismay in the land of the living; and they have borne their humiliation with those who go down to the pit. They have put a bed for her in the midst of the slain with all her crowd; her graves are all around him, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, for their dismay was put in the land of the living, but they have borne their humiliation with them that go down to the pit. He is put in the midst of the slain. Meshech is there, Tubal, and all her crowd; her graves are all around him, all of them uncircumcised, pierced by the sword, for they put their dismay in the land of the living. And they shall not lie with the mighty who are fallen of the uncircumcised, who are gone down to hell with their weapons of war; and they have put their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be on their bones, as they were the dismay of the mighty in the land of the living.

For I have put My dismay in the land of the living; and he shall be laid down in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that are slain with the sword, even Pharaoh and all his multitude, says the Lord Jehovih.

그리고 주님 신앙 안에 있는 사람들을 가리켜 ‘살아 있는 사람들’이라 합니다; And those are called “living” who are in faith in the Lord;

시편에서처럼: as in David:

Who putteth our soul among the living.

And those who possess faith are said to be “in the book of lives (시69:28), and “in the book of life.

Let them be wiped out of the Book of Lives, And not be written with the just.

And all who dwell on the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the founding of the world.

The beast that thou sawest was and is not, and is about to come up out of the abyss, and to go away into destruction; and they who dwell on the earth shall marvel, whose names were not written on the book of life from the founding of the world, looking at the beast that was and is not, and yet is.

And if anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.

Wherefore also those who receive faith in him are said to be “made alive.

After two days He will make us live; in the third day He will raise us up, and we shall live before Him.

Wilt Thou not return, wilt Thou not make us live, That Thy people may be glad in Thee?

다른 한편으로는, 신앙 안에 있지 않은 사람들을 가리켜 ‘죽었다’ 하는 것입니다. On the other hand it follows that those who are not in faith are called “dead”;

이사야에 보면: as in Isaiah:

The dead shall not live; the Rephaim shall not rise again, because thou hast visited and destroyed them, (사26:14)

자아 사랑으로 부풀어 오른 사람들을 의미하면서 말입니다; meaning those who are puffed up with the love of self;

다시 사는 것’은 생명 안으로 들어감을 상징합니다. to “rise again” signifies to enter into life.

They are also said to be “pierced.

And thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, and shalt lie with those slain by the sword. There is Edom, her kings, and all her chiefs, which with their might are put with those slain by the sword; they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with those who go down to the pit. There be the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Zidonians, who have gone down with the slain; by their dismay they are ashamed of their might; and they lie uncircumcised with those slain by the sword, and bear their humiliation with those who go down to the pit. Pharaoh shall see them, and shall comfort himself over all his crowd; Pharaoh and all his host are slain by the sword, says the Lord Jehovih.

They are also called “dead” by the Lord.

흑암에 앉은 백성이 큰 빛을 보았고 사망의 땅과 그늘에 앉은 자들에게 빛이 비치었도다 하였느니라 the people who sat in darkness saw great light; and to them who sat in the country and shadow of death, light has risen.

Amen, amen, I say to you, that an hour comes, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they who hear shall live.

Then Jesus said again to them, I go, and you shall seek Me, and shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come. I said then to you that you shall die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am, you shall die in your sins. Amen, amen, I say to you, If anyone keep My word, he shall not behold death for eternity. Then the Jews said to Him, Now we know that Thou hast a demon. Abraham is dead, and the prophets, and Thou sayest, If anyone keep My word, he shall not taste death into the ages.

Hell also is called “death.

He shall swallow up death perpetually; and the Lord Jehovih shall wipe away the tear from all the faces; and the reproach of His people shall He remove from all the earth; for Jehovah has spoken.

너희가 말하기를 우리는 사망과 언약하였고 스올과 맹약하였은즉 넘치는 재앙이 밀려올지라도 우리에게 미치지 못하리니 우리는 거짓을 우리의 피난처로 삼았고 허위 아래에 우리를 숨겼음이라 하는도다 for you have said, We have cut a covenant with death, and with hell have we made a vision; when the whip of inundation passes through, it shall not come to us; for we will set a lie as our protection, and in falsity will we hide ourselves.

In this verse is described the first time, when the church was in the flower of her youth, representing the heavenly marriage, on which account she is described by a marriage, and is called “Eve,” from a word meaning “life.
