토요예배(5/29, 창4:11, AC.378-379), '네가 땅에서 저주를 받으리니'

땅이 그 입을 벌려 네 손에서부터 네 아우의 피를 받았은즉 네가 땅에서 저주를 받으리니 And now art thou cursed from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to receive thy brother’s bloods from thy hand. (창4:11)

 

 

378. ‘네가 땅에서 저주를 받으리니’는 (이웃 사랑에서) 갈라져 나옴을 통해 (주님을) 피하게 되었음을 상징합니다. “Cursed art thou from the ground” signifies that through the schism he had become averted;

 

‘그 입을 벌려’는 그 이단이 그것들을 가르쳤음을 상징합니다. “which hath opened its mouth” signifies that the heresy taught them;

 

‘네 손에서부터 네 아우의 피를 받았은즉’은 그것이 이웃 사랑에 폭력을 가해서, 그 불을 꺼버렸음을 상징합니다. to “receive thy brother’s bloods from thy hand” signifies that it did violence to charity, and extinguished it.

 

 

379. (이상의 표현들이) 이런 것들을 상징한다는 사실은 앞서 일어난 일들을 보면 분명합니다. That these things are signified is evident from what has gone before;

 

그리고 ‘저주를 받는다’는 것은 선을 싫어한다는 의미임은 앞서 245번 글에서 이미 보았습니다. and that to be “cursed” is to be averse to good, has been already shown (n. 245).

 

불법들, 혐오스러운 것들, 증오들은 사람이 (주님으로부터) 시선을 돌려 오직 아래, 곧 육체적이고 세속적인 것들, 그래서 지옥에 속한 것들만 바라보도록 만들기 때문입니다. For iniquities and abominations, or hatreds, are what avert man, so that he looks downward only, that is, to bodily and earthly things, thus to those which are of hell.

 

이런 일은 이웃 사랑이 쫓겨나 그 불이 꺼질 때 일어납니다. 이때 주님과 사람 사이 유대가 손상을 입게 되기 때문인데요, 오직 이웃 사랑이나 사랑, 자비로만 우리는 주님과 결합하기 때문입니다. 이웃 사랑 없는 신앙으로는 절대 안 됩니다. 이런 건 신앙도 아니요, 그저 신앙과 관련된 무슨 지식에 불과한 것이기 때문이며, 지옥의 패거리들끼리나 소유할 수 있는 것입니다. 그들은 이런 걸로 선한 사람들을 아주 교활하게 속일 수도, 자신들을 빛의 천사로 위장할 수도 있습니다. This takes place when charity is banished and extinguished, for then the bond which connects the Lord with man is severed, since only charity, or love and mercy, are what conjoin us with him, and never faith without charity, for this is no faith, being mere knowledge, such as the infernal crew themselves may possess, and by which they can craftily deceive the good, and feign themselves angels of light;

 

가장 사악한 설교자들이 종종 아주 경건한 척, 열정적으로 그러는 것처럼 말이지요. 입술보다 마음이 오히려 더 텅 비었는데도 말입니다. and as the most wicked preachers are sometimes wont to do, with a zeal like that of piety, although nothing is further from their hearts than that which proceeds from their lips.

 

머리로만 알고 있는 신앙 혹은 그런 신앙에서 나오는 생각들을 믿을 정도로 그렇게 빈약한 판단력을 가진 사람이 있을까요? 그냥 보기에도 아무 진정성이 없어 보이는 말을 하는데도 진심으로 마음을 담아 존경을 표하고, 그를 찬성하면서 생각하기를, ‘아, 이 사람은 참 괜찮은 사람이다.’ 할 사람이 있을까요? 그런 사람은 없습니다. 사람들은 다 알지요. 말만 그럴듯하게 한다는 걸 다 압니다. Can anyone be of judgment so weak as to believe that faith alone in the memory, or the thought thence derived, can be of any avail, when everybody knows from his own experience that no one esteems the words or assenting of another, no matter of what nature, when they do not come from the will or intention?

 

사람들을 기쁘게 하고, 서로를 묶어주는 것은 바로 이것, 곧 진정한 의지입니다. It is this that makes them pleasing, and that conjoins one man with another.

 

사람의 의지가 그 사람의 진짜 모습입니다. 그의 마음이 안 담긴 생각이나 말 말고 말입니다. The will is the real man, and not the thought or speech which he does not will.

 

사람은 의지로부터 그의 천성과 기질을 얻습니다. 이것이 그에게 영향을 미치기 때문이지요. A man acquires his nature and disposition from the will, because this affects him.

 

그러나 만일 누가 무엇이 선인가를 생각 중이라면, 신앙의 본질, 그것은 이웃 사랑인데요, 그것이 그 생각 안에 있는 것입니다. 선을 행하고자 하는 의지가 그 안에 있기 때문입니다. But if anyone thinks what is good, the essence of faith, which is charity, is in the thought, because the will to do what is good is in it.

 

그러나 만일 그가 선한 것을 생각한다 말은 하면서도 정작 사악하게 산다면, 그는 오직 악한 것밖에는 의도할 수가 없고, 그런 이유로 거기에는 신앙이라는 게 전혀 있을 수가 없습니다. But if he says that he thinks what is good, and yet lives wickedly, he cannot possibly will anything but what is evil, and there is therefore no faith.
