24절, 이같이 하나님이 그 사람을 쫓아내시고 에덴동산 동쪽에 그룹들과 두루 도는 불 칼을 두어 생명 나무의 길을 지키게 하시니라 And he cast out the man; and he made to dwell from the east toward the garden of Eden cherubim, and the flame of a sword turning itself, to keep the way of the tree of lives.

여기서 말씀드리고 있는 내용이 첫 사람(the first man)에 관한 것이라는 사실로부터 분명한 것은, 오늘날 존재하는 모든 유전 악은 그(him)로 말미암은 게 아니라는 것입니다. 가정이 잘못된 것입니다. 그 이유는, 여기 ‘사람’이라는 이름으로 다루고 있는 것은 태고(太古, the most ancient) 교회이기 때문입니다. 이 교회를 ‘아담’이라 하면서 상징하는 것은, 사람은 땅으로 말미암았다는 것, 즉 ‘사람이 아닌’(nonman) 상태에서 시작, 주님으로 말미암아 거듭나 ‘사람’이 되었다는 것입니다. From what is here said of the first man, it is evident that all the hereditary evil existing at the present day did not come from him, as is falsely supposed. For it is the most ancient church that is here treated of under the name of “man”; and when it is called “Adam,” it signifies that man was from the ground, or that from being nonman he became man by regeneration from the Lord.

※ 겉모습이 사람이라고 사람이 되는 게 아닙니다. 그 안에 주님의 신성이 깃들어야 비로소 ‘사람’이 되는 것입니다.

이것이 그 이름의 기원과 상징입니다. 유전 악에 대해서는 그 경우는 이런데요, 실제 죄를 짓는 사람마다 자신에게 그로 인한 어떤 본성(a nature)을 초래하며, 그로 인한 악이 그의 어린 자녀들에게 심겨 유전 악이 되는 것입니다. This is the origin and signification of the name. But as to hereditary evil, the case is this. Everyone who commits actual sin thereby induces on himself a nature, and the evil from it is implanted in his children, and becomes hereditary.

※ 내가 범하는 낱낱의 죄로 인해 실제로 나의 본성이 손상되며, 영향을 받는다는 말이며, 어렸을 때부터 곁에서 이를 지켜보며 자란 자녀들 또한 결정적인 영향을 받는다는 말입니다.

※ 주님과 동거한 열두 제자들, 프란치스코와 함께한 열두 형제들, 이현필 선생과 함께한 동광원 사람들, 공용복 선생과 함께한 핵심진리의 사람들 등 ‘동거’, ‘공동생활’의 비밀과 유익이 그래서 중요합니다. 중심인물이 주님께 사로잡힌 바만 확실하다면 말입니다.

유전악은 그렇게 모든 부모로부터, 아버지, 할아버지, 증조 및 가계를 따라 그들의 선조로부터 이어져 내려오며, 그렇게 각각의 이어지는 후손들 안에서 배가하고 늘어납니다. 유전악은 각 사람 안에 머무르며, 각자 실제 짓는 죄로 인해 증가하고, 주님으로 말미암아 거듭나고 있는 사람들을 제외하고는 절대 사람에게 해가 되지 않도록 저절로 소멸하는 일은 결코 일어나지 않습니다. 주의 깊게 관찰하시는 모든 분들은 다음과 같은 사실을 통해 이 말이 맞다는 것을 분명히 확인하실 수 있습니다. 부모의 악한 경향은 자녀들 안에 눈에 보이도록 남아 한 가계, 심지어 그 종족 전체가 그로 인해 다른 모든 가계나 종족들하고 구별될 수도 있을 정도라는 걸 말입니다. It thus descends from every parent, from the father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and their ancestors in succession, and is thus multiplied and augmented in each descending posterity, remaining with each person, and being increased in each by his actual sins, and never being dissipated so as to become harmless except in those who are being regenerated by the Lord. Every attentive observer may see evidence of this truth in the fact that the evil inclinations of parents remain visibly in their children, so that one family, and even an entire race, may be thereby distinguished from every other.

본 절에서, 이들 홍수 전 시대를 산 사람들의 상태가 아주 충분히 설명되었는데요, 그들은 ‘쫓겨났다’, 즉 천적 선으로부터 분리되었다는 점에서, 그리고 ‘그룹들이 동쪽에서부터 에덴동산을 향하여 있었다’라는 점에서 그렇습니다. 이 표현, ‘동쪽에서부터(from) 에덴 동산을 향하여(toward)’라는 표현은 그들에게만 쓸 수 있는 표현입니다. 그후를 산 사람들 관련해서는 쓸 수 없는데, 이들의 경우라면 ‘에덴 동산에서부터(from) 동쪽을 향하여(toward)’라고 했을 겁니다. In this verse, the state of these antediluvians is fully described, in that they were “cast out,” or separated from celestial good, and in that “cherubim were placed from the east toward the garden of Eden.” This expression, “from the east toward the garden of Eden,” is applicable only to them, and could not be used in relation to those who lived afterwards, of whom it would have been said, “from the garden of Eden toward the east.”

※ 전자는 천적인 반면, 후자는 영적이기 때문입니다. 천적인 것은 주님, 곧 ‘동쪽’에서부터, 사랑과 선에서부터 시작하지만, 영적인 것은 지성, 곧 ‘동산’에서부터, 신앙과 진리에서부터 시작하기 때문입니다.

마찬가지로, 말씀 ‘스스로 도는 검의 화염’이라는 표현을 오늘날 사람들에게 쓰고자 하였다면, ‘스스로 도는 화염의 검’이라고 했을 겁니다. 뿐만 아니라, ‘생명들의 나무’ 역시 ‘생명의 나무’라 했을 것입니다. 설명이 불가능한, 오직 천사들에게만 이해가 되는, 주님이 이들에게는 계시를 드러내시는데요, 이런 일련의 것들에 대해서는 더 이상 드릴 말씀이 없습니다. 모든 상태마다 무한한 아르카나가 들어있는데 심지어 그 중 사람들에게 알려진 단 하나의 아르카나조차 그렇기 때문입니다. In like manner, had the words “the flame of a sword turning itself” been applied to the people of the present day, they would have been “the sword of a flame turning itself.” Nor would it have been said the “tree of lives,” but the “tree of life”; not to mention other things in the series that cannot possibly be explained, being understood only by the angels, to whom the Lord reveals them; for every state contains infinite arcana, not even one of which is known to men.

홍수로 사라진 사람들의 내세에서의 상태는 이렇습니다. 그들은 영들의 세계(the world of spirits) 그 어디에도 있을 수 없습니다. 다른 영들과 함께 할 수 없다는 말이지요. 대신 마치 어떤 산 아래인 것 같은 데에 있어 다른 지옥들하고는 분리된 그런 지옥에 있습니다. 이것은 그들의 무시무시한 환상과 들러붙은 신념들의 결과, 마치 중간에 떠억 하니 가로막는 산처럼 보입니다. 그들이 가진 이런 남다른 고약한 능력은 다른 영들을 아주 중증(重症) 인사불성 상태에 이르게 하여 그들로 하여금 자기들이 지금 살았는지 죽었는지도 모르게 하는 그런 건데, 이것은 그들이 다른 영들한테서 진리를 이해하는 모든 능력을 빼앗아 그들로 하여금 아무것도 지각하지 못 하게 하기 때문입니다. 세상에 있을 동안에도 그들의, 사람의 혼을 쏙 빼놓는 능력은 그랬습니다. 내세에서도 그들은 다른 영들을 이런 일종의 죽음에 이르게 하지 않고는 다른 영들과 도저히 함께할 수 없는 자들임이 예견되었고, 그래서 결국 그들은 모두 소멸되었습니다. 주님의 신적 자비로 홍수 후를 살았던 사람들은 이들과는 다른 상태들로 인도되었습니다. In the other life, the state of those who perished by the flood is such that they cannot be in the world of spirits, or with other spirits, but are in a hell separated from the hells of others, and as it were under a certain mountain. This appears as an intervening mountain in consequence of their direful fantasies and persuasions. Their fantasies and persuasions are such as to produce so profound a stupor in other spirits that they do not know whether they are alive or dead, for they deprive them of all understanding of truth, so that they perceive nothing. Such also was their persuasive power during their abode in the world; and because it was foreseen that in the other life they would be incapable of associating with other spirits without inducing on them a kind of death, they all became extinct, and the Lord of his Divine mercy induced other states on those who lived after the flood.
