7절, 이에 그들의 눈이 밝아져 자기들이 벗은 줄을 알고 무화과나무 잎을 엮어 치마로 삼았더라 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves girdles.

‘눈이 밝아져’(the eyes opened)가 어떤 내적 딕테이트(dictate)를 의미한다는 건 말씀에 나오는 유사 표현들, 가령, 발람의 독백 구절을 보면 분명한데요, 거기서(민24:3) 그는 전능자의 환상을 보고 나서 자신을 가리켜 ‘눈을 감았던 자’(the man whose eyes are opened)라 하고 있습니다. That by having the “eyes opened” is signified an interior dictate is evident from similar expressions in the Word, as from what Balaam says of himself, who in consequence of having visions calls himself the “man whose eyes are opened.” (Num. 24:3)

※ 이 부분, 한글 개역개정에서는 ‘감았던’으로 번역하고 있지만, 위 영역을 보면 분명 ‘뜬’입니다.

그가 예언을 전하여 말하되 브올의 아들 발람이 말하며 눈을 감았던 자가 말하며 (민24:3)

그리고 요나단의 경우인데요, 그는 벌집의 꿀을 조금 맛본 후, 지금 그들이 처한 상황이 악하다는 걸 어떤 딕테이트를 통해 듣습니다. 그리고는 이렇게 말하지요. ‘내 눈이 밝아졌거든’(his eyes saw), 즉 자신의 내적 시야가 열려서 몰랐던 걸 보게 되었다고 말입니다. And from Jonathan, who when he tasted of the honeycomb and had a dictate from within that it was evil, said that his “eyes saw,” that is, were enlightened, so that he saw what he knew not. (1 Sam. 14:29)

요나단이 이르되 내 아버지께서 이 땅을 곤란하게 하셨도다 보라 내가 이 꿀 조금을 맛보고도 내 눈이 이렇게 밝아졌거든 (삼상14:29)

더더욱 말씀에 보면, ‘눈’(the eyes)은 종종 이해와, 거기서 나오는 내적 딕테이트를 가리키는 데 사용됩니다. 시편입니다. Moreover in the Word, the “eyes” are often used to denote the understanding, and thus an interior dictate therefrom, as in David:

나의 눈을 밝히소서 두렵건대 내가 사망의 잠을 잘까 하오며 (시13:3) Lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, (Ps. 13:3)

여기 ‘눈’(eyes)은 이해를 가리킵니다. 에스겔에도 보면 나오는데요, 의도적으로 이해하려고 하지 않는 자들, 곧 ‘볼 눈이 있어도 보지 아니하는’(have eyes to see, and see not)(겔12:2) 족속들에 대해 말씀하시는 부분입니다. where “eyes” denote the understanding. So in Ezekiel, speaking of those who are not willing to understand, who “have eyes to see, and see not.” (Ezek. 12:2)

인자야 네가 반역하는 족속 중에 거주하는도다 그들은 볼 눈이 있어도 보지 아니하고 들을 귀가 있어도 듣지 아니하나니 그들은 반역하는 족속임이라 (겔12:2)

이사야입니다. In Isaiah:

그들의 눈이 감기게 하라 염려하건대 그들이 눈으로 보고 (사6:10) Shut their eyes, lest they see with their eyes, (Isa. 6:10)

위 말씀은 그들로 볼 수 없게 해야지, 안 그러면 그들이 이해하게 될 거라는 말씀입니다. 그래서 모세는 백성들에게 다음과 같이 말한 겁니다. denotes that they should be made blind, lest they should understand. So Moses said to the people,

그러나 깨닫는 마음과 보는 눈과 듣는 귀는 오늘 여호와께서 너희에게 주지 아니하셨느니라 (신29:4) Jehovah hath not given you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, (Deut. 29:4)

여기서 ‘마음’(heart)은 의지를, ‘눈’(eyes)은 이해를 가리킵니다. where “heart” denotes the will, and “eyes” denote the understanding. 

※ 우리 생각엔 ‘어? 사람들이 깨닫는 게 더 좋은 거 아닌가? 왜 그걸 막으시는 거지?’ 하지만, 그러나 실상은 그렇지 않은 게, 특별히 이스라엘 백성은 차라리 깨닫지 못하는 게 더 그들에겐 안전하기 때문입니다. 그들의 민족적 특성상, 그들은 오히려 깨닫게 되면 나중에 반드시 돌이켜 배신할 것이기 때문인데요, 차라리 몰랐더라면 그냥 그 정도에 머무를 텐데, 알고 나서 다시 예전 상태로 돌아가게 되면, 그때는 그의 사후 상태가 정말 돌이킬 수 없는 상태가 되기 때문입니다. 이런 것이 바로 신성모독이며, 이 신성모독의 죄가 정말 무서운 이유는, 이 신성모독의 삶을 산 사람은 그 영이 오염되기 때문입니다. 이 영이 오염된다는 건 영의 상태가 계속 이랬다저랬다 영원히 반복되는 것입니다.

이사야에서는 주님을 가리켜, ‘네가 눈먼 자들의 눈을 밝히며’(he should open the blind eyes)(사42:7)라 하십니다. In Isaiah it is said of the Lord, that “he should open the blind eyes.” (Isa. 42:7)

네가 눈먼 자들의 눈을 밝히며 갇힌 자를 감옥에서 이끌어 내며 흑암에 앉은 자를 감방에서 나오게 하리라 (사42:7)

계속해서 이사야에서, ‘어둡고 캄캄한 데에서 맹인의 눈이 볼 것이며’(The eyes of the blind shall see out of thick darkness and out of darkness)(사29:18)라 하십니다. And in the same prophet: “The eyes of the blind shall see out of thick darkness and out of darkness.” (Isa. 29:18)

그날에 못 듣는 사람이 책의 말을 들을 것이며 어둡고 캄캄한 데에서 맹인의 눈이 볼 것이며 (사29:18)

그들의 ‘눈이 밝아져’(eyes being opened)는 그들이 어떤 내적 딕테이트(an interior dictate)를 듣고, 자기들이 ‘벗은 줄’(naked) 알게 되었다, 즉 더 이상 전처럼 이노센스(innocence)가 아닌, 악 가운데 있음을 알고 인정했다는 말입니다. Their “eyes being opened” signifies their knowing and acknowledging, from an interior dictate, that they were “naked,” that is, no longer in innocence, as before, but in evil.

※ 딕테이트(dictate) : 보통 딕테이션이라 하면 누가 하는 말을 곁에서 받아 적는 걸 말하지요. 목사님의 설교 테이프를 들으며 활자화하는 걸 설교 딕테이션이라 하는 것처럼 말입니다. 여기 딕테이션, 딕테이트는 특별히 '내적'(interior)이라 하여 영으로, 속으로 듣는 것입니다. 주변 사람들은 못 듣지만, 본인은 생생하게 듣는 거지요. 말씀에는 이러한 예가 정말 많이 나오는데요, 오늘날도, 지금도 마찬가지입니다. 모든 주님의 음성을 듣는 사람들은 바로 이 딕테이트로 듣는 것입니다. 이 역시 딱히 우리말 번역이 좀 어색해서 저는 그냥 '딕테이트'로 적습니다.

6절, 여자가 그 나무를 본즉 먹음직도 하고 보암직도 하고 지혜롭게 할 만큼 탐스럽기도 한 나무인지라 여자가 그 열매를 따먹고 자기와 함께 있는 남편에게도 주매 그도 먹은지라 And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to give intelligence, and she took of the fruit thereof and did eat, and she gave also to her man [vir] with her, and he did eat.

사람의 오운(own)이란 무엇인가를 이렇게도 말씀드릴 수 있습니다. 사람의 오운은 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑으로부터, 그리고 주님이나 말씀 대신 자신을 믿는, 그리고 감각적으로 이해가 안 되거나, 기억-지식을 가지고 설명할 수 없는 건 아무 것도 아닌 걸로 여기는, 이런 태도들로부터 샘처럼 솟아나는 모든 악과 거짓입니다. 이런 식으로 사람들은 그저 악과 거짓이 되어 모든 걸 거꾸로 보는데요, 악한 걸 선으로 보고, 선한 건 악으로 보지요. 거짓은 참으로, 참은 거짓으로, 실제로 존재하는 걸 없다 하고, 없는 걸 그들은 모든 것이라고 합니다. 사람들은 사랑을 증오라 하고, 빛을 어둠, 생명은 사망이라 하며, 그 반대로도 합니다. 말씀에서는 이런 사람들을 ‘다리를 저는 사람들’(the lame), ‘눈먼 사람들’(the blind)이라고 합니다. 네, 이런 게 사람의 오운입니다. 그 자체로 지옥적이며, 저주받은 것이지요. What man’s own is may be stated in this way. Man’s own is all the evil and falsity that springs from the love of self and of the world, and from not believing in the Lord or the Word but in self, and from supposing that what cannot be apprehended sensuously and by means of memory-knowledge [sensualiter et scientifice] is nothing. In this way men become mere evil and falsity, and therefore regard all things pervertedly; things that are evil they see as good, and things that are good as evil; things that are false they see as true, and things that are true as false; things that really exist they suppose to be nothing, and things that are nothing they suppose to be everything. They call hatred love, darkness light, death life, and the converse. In the Word, such men are called the “lame” and the “blind.” Such then is the own of man, which in itself is infernal and accursed.
