17절, 아담에게 이르시되 네가 네 아내의 말을 듣고 내가 네게 먹지 말라 한 나무의 열매를 먹었은즉 땅은 너로 말미암아 저주를 받고 너는 네 평생에 수고하여야 그 소산을 먹으리라 And unto the man he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake; in great sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.

‘네가 네 아내의 말을 듣고’는 아담(the man), 즉 래셔널(rational, 合理)의 동의를 말합니다. 이 부주의한 동의의 결과, 외면과 저주를 자초, 결과적으로는 완전한 겉의 사람이 된 것을 ‘땅은 너로 말미암아 저주를 받고’라는 표현으로 나타내고 있습니다. ‘수고하여야 그 소산을 먹으리라’는 그의 삶의 미래가 비참할 것을 의미하며, 이것은 심지어 그 교회의 종말에 이르도록 그럴 것이라는 의미입니다. ‘네 평생에’는 그런 의미입니다. By the “man hearkening to the voice of his wife” is signified the consent of the man, or rational, by which it also averted or cursed itself, and consequently the whole external man, denoted by “cursed is the ground for thy sake.” To “eat thereof in sorrow” means that the future state of his life would be miserable, and this even to the end of that church, or “all the days of his life.”
