13마할랄렐을 낳은 후 팔백사십 년을 지내며 자녀들을 낳았으며 And Kenan lived after he begat Mahalalel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters. 14그는 구백십 세를 살고 죽었더라 And all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died. (창5:13-14)

508. 여기 ‘날’과 ‘해’의 수, 곧 햇수는 앞서와 같은 상징들을 갖습니다. The “days” and numbers of “years” have the same signification here as before.

여기 ‘자녀’ 또한 진리와 선을 상징합니다. 이 교회 사람들에게도 역시 퍼셉션이 있었지만, 그러나 이들은 앞 세 교회보다 더 일반적으로만 취급했습니다. “Sons and daughters” here also signify truths and goods, whereof the members of the church had a perception, but in a more general manner.

즉, 덜 소중하게, 시큰둥하게 여겼다는 말입니다. 점점 더 자기를 사랑하게 되어 자기들에게 천부적으로 주어진 이 퍼셉션 능력을 불편하게 여기기 시작했다는 것입니다. 이 퍼셉션으로 말미암아 주님의 신성, 곧 주님의 뜻에 아주 예민한 상태로 늘 있을 수 있기 때문에, 주님보다 자기와 세상을 더 사랑하고픈 사람에게는 이 천부적 재능처럼 불편한 재능도 아마 없었지 싶습니다...

그가 ‘죽었다’라는 것은 이런 퍼셉션의 상태가 멈춘, 더 이상 작동하지 않게 된, 그런 것을 상징합니다. That he “died” signifies in like manner the cessation of such a state of perception.

509. 여기서 꼭 주목해야 할 것은, 모든 것은 교회의 상태와 어떻게 관련되느냐 하는 것으로 결정된다는 것입니다. It is here only to be remarked, that all things are determined by their relation to the state of the church.

모든 천사가 가장 작은 형태의 천국이듯 모든 사람은 가장 작은 형태의 교회입니다. 모든 천사와 사람은 주님의 신성, 곧 주님의 선과 진리를 담는 그릇입니다. 모든 것은 그가 주님의 신성을 얼마나 담고 있느냐로 결정되며, 그렇게 교회의 상태가 결정되는 것입니다.

506. ‘게난’은 네 번째 교회를, ‘마할랄렐’은 다섯 번째를 각각 상징합니다. By “Kenan” is signified a fourth church, and by “Mahalalel” a fifth.

507. ‘게난’이라 하는 교회는 퍼셉션에 관한 한, 보다 더 완전한 교회인 위 세 교회 중 하나로 여겨질 정도는 아닙니다. 이들 세 교회는 퍼셉션에 있어 서로 구별될 정도였지만 지금은 평범해지기 시작했습니다. 마치 열매나 씨의 핵에 비해 상대적으로 부드러운 첫 번째 막과도 같이 말이지요. 이런 상태는 사실 어떻게 설명할 수는 없지만, 이어지는 후속 교회들, 예를 들면, ‘에녹’, ‘노아’라 하는 교회들에 관한 설명을 보면 분명히 다른 상태입니다. The church called “Kenan” is not to be so much reckoned among those three more perfect ones, inasmuch as perception, which in the former churches had been distinct, began now to become general, comparatively as are the first and softer membranes relatively to the kernel of fruits or seeds; which state is not indeed described, but still is apparent from what follows, as from the description of the churches called “Enoch” and “Noah.”

504. 여기 ‘날’(days) 및 ‘해’(years)의 수, 그리고 ‘자녀’ 및 ‘죽음’ 역시 앞에서 다룬 것들과 같은 것들을 상징합니다. Here in like manner the “days” and numbers of “years,” and also “sons and daughters,” and his “dying,” signify like things.

505. ‘에노스’는 앞서 본 대로 세 번째 교회이지만 여전히 태고교회의 일원입니다. 그러나 ‘셋’보다 덜 천적이며, 그래서 퍼셉션에 있어 덜한 교회입니다. ‘셋’ 역시 그 부모 교회인 ‘아담’ 교회보다 덜 천적이며, 퍼셉션에 있어 덜한 교회였습니다. “Enosh,” as before observed, is a third church, yet one of the most ancient churches, but less celestial, and consequently less perceptive, than the church “Seth”; and this latter was not so celestial and perceptive as the parent church, called “man.”

이들 세 교회를 일컬어 함께 태고교회라고는 하지만, 태고교회는 그 후속 교회들에 비해 상대적으로 열매 혹은 씨앗의 핵에 해당하고, 반면, 이어지는 후속 교회들은 상대적으로 그 열매의 막 역할을 하고 있습니다. These three are what constitute the most ancient church, which, relatively to the succeeding ones, was as the kernel of fruits, or seeds, whereas the succeeding churches are relatively as the membranaceous parts of these.
