21절, 여호와 하나님이 아담을 깊이 잠들게 하시니 잠들매 그가 그 갈빗대 하나를 취하고 살로 대신 채우시고 And Jehovah God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in the place thereof.

가슴 뼈인 ‘갈빗대’(a rib)는 사람의 오운(own, 라틴 proprium)을 말하는데, 그 안에 생기라고는 거의 없는, 그러나 실제로는 그에게 있어 무척 소중한, 그런 겁니다. ‘살로 대신 채우시고’(flesh in the place of the rib)는 그 안에 생기가 있는 오운을 말하며, ‘깊이 잠들게’(a deep sleep)는 상태를 말하는데, 사람이 이 상태가 되면 그는 자신이 보기에도 자기는 지금 자신의 오운 가운데 있는 줄 아는 그런 상태인데요, 이는 마치 잠든 상태와 유사하여, 이 상태에서는 사람은 살고, 생각하고, 말하고, 행동하는 모든것이 자기 자신으로부터 말미암는 줄만 아는 상태이기 때문입니다. 하지만 사실은 그렇지 않음을, 즉 이것이 거짓임을 알기 시작하면서부터 그는 마치 잠에서 깨듯 분별, 정신을 차리게 됩니다. By a “rib,” which is a bone of the chest, is meant man’s own, in which there is but little vitality, and indeed an own which is dear to him; by “flesh in the place of the rib” is meant an own in which there is vitality; by a “deep sleep” is meant the state into which he was let so that he might seem to himself to have what is his own, which state resembles sleep, because while in it he knows not but that he lives, thinks, speaks, and acts, from himself. But when he begins to know that this is false, he is then roused as it were out of sleep, and becomes awake.
