창3:1-6
1그런데 뱀은 여호와 하나님이 지으신 들짐승 중에 가장 간교하니라 뱀이 여자에게 물어 이르되 하나님이 참으로 너희에게 동산 모든 나무의 열매를 먹지 말라 하시더냐 And the serpent was more subtle than any wild animal of the field which Jehovah God had made; and he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2여자가 뱀에게 말하되 동산 나무의 열매를 우리가 먹을 수 있으나 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the tree of the garden; 3동산 중앙에 있는 나무의 열매는 하나님의 말씀에 너희는 먹지도 말고 만지지도 말라 너희가 죽을까 하노라 하셨느니라 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4뱀이 여자에게 이르되 너희가 결코 죽지 아니하리라 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die. 5너희가 그것을 먹는 날에는 너희 눈이 밝아져 하나님과 같이 되어 선악을 알 줄 하나님이 아심이니라 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil. 6여자가 그 나무를 본즉 먹음직도 하고 보암직도 하고 지혜롭게 할 만큼 탐스럽기도 한 나무인지라 여자가 그 열매를 따먹고 자기와 함께 있는 남편에게도 주매 그도 먹은지라 And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to give intelligence, and she took of the fruit thereof and did eat, and she gave also to her man [vir] with her, and he did eat.

이런 이유로, ‘뱀’, 곧 감각 파트가 여자를 설득, 주님 신앙에 관한 것들이 과연 그런지를 의심을 품고 다시 생각해 보게 했는데, 이것을 ‘선악을 알게 하는 나무를 먹기’(eating of the tree of knowledge)로, 그리고 사람의 이성이 여기에 동의한 걸 ‘그도 먹은지라’(the man that he did eat)로 상징하고 있습니다. (1-6절) Hence the “serpent,” or sensuous part, persuaded the woman to inquire into matters pertaining to faith in the Lord in order to see whether they are really so, which is signified by “eating of the tree of knowledge”; and that the rational of man consented is signified by “the man that he did eat.” (verses 1–6)
