1절, 그런데 뱀은 여호와 하나님이 지으신 들짐승 중에 가장 간교하니라 뱀이 여자에게 물어 이르되 하나님이 참으로 너희에게 동산 모든 나무의 열매를 먹지 말라 하시더냐 And the serpent was more subtle than any wild animal of the field which Jehovah God had made; and he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

여기 ‘뱀’(the serpent)은 사람이 신뢰하는 감각 파트를 말합니다. 여기 ‘들짐승’(the wild animal of the field)은 앞에서처럼 겉 사람의 모든 어펙션(affection)을, ‘여자’(the woman)는 사람의 오운(own)을, 뱀의 말, ‘하나님이 참으로 너희에게 동산 모든 나무의 열매를 먹지 말라 하시더냐’(Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree?)는 그들이 의심하기 시작했음을 의미합니다. 여기서 다루는 주제는 태고교회의 세 번째 후손인데, 그들은 계시된 것들이 과연 그런지 자신들이 직접 눈으로 보고, 감각으로 느낄 수 있어야만 믿기 시작했습니다. 그들의 첫 번째 상태, 일종의 의심하는 상태에 대한 설명이 본 절과 다음 절에 계속 이어집니다. By the “serpent” is here meant the sensuous part of man in which he trusts; by the “wild animal of the field” here, as before, every affection of the external man; by the “woman,” man’s own; by the serpent’s saying, “Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree?” that they began to doubt. The subject here treated of is the third posterity of the most ancient church, which began not to believe in things revealed unless they saw and felt that they were so. Their first state, that it was one of doubt, is described in this and in the next following verse.
