CONCERNING THE ENTRANCE INTO ETERNAL LIFE

OF THOSE WHO ARE RAISED FROM DEATH

182. 천적 천사들이 부활한 사람과 함께 있을 때, 그들은 그를 떠나지 않습니다. 그들은 모든 사람을 사랑하기 때문입니다. When the celestial angels are with a resuscitated person, they do not leave him, for they love everyone;

그러나 그 영이 천적 천사들과 더 이상 함께 있을 수가 없는 그런 캐릭터일 때는, 그는 이들로부터 좀 얼른 떠날 수 있었으면 하고 간절히 원합니다. but when the soul is of such a character that he can no longer be in the company of the celestial angels, he is eager to depart from them;

다음 순서는 영적 천사들의 도착입니다. 영적 천사들이 그에게 도착하여 이번엔 그가 빛을 사용할 수 있도록 해 줍니다. 앞서 그는 아무것도 못 보고 그저 생각만 하고 있었기 때문입니다. and when this takes place the spiritual angels arrive, and give him the use of light, for previously he had seen nothing, but had only thought.

183. 저의 눈에 이 천사들이 그 일을 어떤 식으로 하는지가 보였습니다. I was shown how these angels work.

그들은 마치 왼쪽 눈꺼풀을 코의 중격, 그러니까 가운데를 향해 롤 말 듯 마는 것 같았습니다. 눈이 떠져서 빛을 사용할 수 있게 하려고 말립니다. They seemed to as it were roll off the coat of the left eye toward the septum of the nose, in order that the eye might be opened and the use of light be granted.

당사자에겐 이 일이 정말 실제로 일어나는 것 같지만 사실은 단지 그렇게 보일 뿐입니다. To the man it appears as if this were really done, but it is only an appearance.

184. 이 쪼그만 막이 그렇게 롤 말리는 것처럼 보인 후, 빛이 조금 보이기 시작하는데 아직은 희미한 것이 마치 사람이 잠에서 깰 때 맨 먼저 눈꺼풀을 통해서 보는 것처럼 그렇게 보입니다. After this little membrane has been thus in appearance rolled off, some light is visible, but dim, such as a man sees through his eyelids when he first awakes out of sleep;

지금 깨어나고 있는 이 사람은 어떤 고요한 상태 가운데 있는데, 이것은 그가 여전히 천적 천사들에 의해 보호를 받고 있기 때문입니다. and he who is being resuscitated is in a tranquil state, being still guarded by the celestial angels.

그러고 나서 작은 별과 함께 일종의 하늘색 그림자가 나타나는 것 같습니다. 저는 이런 일이 다양하게 일어나는 일임을 지각했습니다. There then appears a kind of shadow of an azure color, with a little star, but I perceived that this takes place with variety.

185. 그런 일이 있고 나면, 얼굴에서 뭔가 부드러운 게 벗겨지는 것 같습니다. 그리고 퍼셉션이 그에게 시작되면서 그는, 천사들이 자기한테서 무슨 부드럽고 연한, 사랑 말고 다른 무슨 관념들이라도 나올까 매우 주의를 기울이고 있음을 지각합니다. Afterwards there seems to be something gently unrolled from the face, and perception is communicated to him, the angels being especially cautious to prevent any idea coming from him but such as is of a soft and tender nature, as of love;

그러고 나서야 비로소 그에게 그는 이제 영이 되었음을 알려줍니다. and it is now given him to know that he is a spirit.

186. 그는 이제 자신의 삶을 시작합니다. He then commences his life.

이 삶은 처음에는 기쁘고 행복합니다. 그는 스스로 보기에도 영원한 삶 가운데 도착한 것 같기 때문입니다. 이 삶은 밝고 하얀 빛으로 표현되며, 이 빛은 아름다운 황금색 아우라가 됩니다. 천적이며 또 영적인 지혜를 향한 그의 첫 번째 삶은 이런 상징으로 나타납니다. This at first is happy and glad, for he seems to himself to have come into eternal life, which is represented by a bright white light that becomes of a beautiful golden tinge, by which is signified his first life, to wit, that it is celestial as well as spiritual.

187. 선한 영들의 사회로 배정되는 이 다음 순서는 한 마리 말 위에 앉아 말로 하여금 지옥을 향하도록 하고 있는, 그러나 그 말은 한 발자국도 못 움직이는, 어떤 청년으로 표현됩니다. His being next taken into the society of good spirits is represented by a young man sitting on a horse and directing it toward hell, but the horse cannot move a step.

그는 젊음으로 표현됩니다. 왜냐하면, 그가 처음 영원한 삶 가운데 들어왔을 때 그는 천사들 가운데 있으며, 그래서 그에게는 그것이 젊음의 꽃 가운데 있는 것처럼 보이기 때문입니다. He is represented as a youth because when he first enters upon eternal life he is among angels, and therefore appears to himself to be in the flower of youth.

188. 이어지는 그의 삶이 그가 말에서 내려 두 발로 걷는 것으로 표현됩니다. 그가 그 말을 움직여 그곳을 떠나게 할 수가 없기 때문입니다. His subsequent life is represented by his dismounting from the horse and walking on foot, because he cannot make the horse move from the place;

그리고 자기는 선과 진리에 관한 지식들을 가지고 교육을 받게 된다는 암시를 받게 됩니다. and it is insinuated to him that he must be instructed in the knowledges of what is true and good.

189. 그 후, 선과 진리에 관한 지식들과 그걸 자각함으로써 그는 서서히 천국으로 인도될 것임을 상징하는 오솔길들이 위를 향해 살짝 기울어진 채 보였습니다. Afterwards pathways were seen sloping gently upward, which signify that by the knowledges of what is true and good, and by self-acknowledgment, he should be led by degrees toward heaven;

아무도 이런 종류의 자각과 또 선과 진리에 관한 지식들 없이 저곳으로 인도될 수 없습니다. for no one can be conducted thither without such self￾acknowledgment, and the knowledges of what is true and good.

THE RESUSCITATION OF MAN FROM DEATH,

AND HIS ENTRANCE INTO ETERNAL LIFE

168. 사람이 몸과 함께 지내던 삶에서 영원한 삶으로 어떻게 옮겨가는지 그 연결되는 순서대로 설명해도 좋다는 허락을 저는 주님으로부터 받았습니다. 사람들이 부활에 관한 이런 사실들을 알 수 있도록 말입니다. 이 이야기는 제가 누구한테 들은 게 아니라 저 자신, 직접 체험한 것입니다. 주님은 제가 직접 체험해 보고 전하게 하셨습니다. Being permitted to describe in connected order how man passes from the life of the body into the life of eternity, in order that the way in which he is resuscitated might be known, this has been shown me, not by hearing, but by actual experience.

169. 저는 무감각상태, 곧 육체적으로 감각을 느낄 수 없는 상태로 내려갔습니다. 이 상태는 거의 죽어가는 사람의 상태이지만 저의 내적 생명은 손상되지 않은 채 유지되고 있었고, 계속 ‘생각’이라는 걸 할 수 있었으며, 생명을 위한 숨을 충분히 쉴 수 있었는데, 끝에 가서는 무언의 호흡이 되었습니다. 저를 이런 신비한 상태에 들어가게 하신 것은, 죽음을 완료하고, 그리고 다시 깨어나는 사람들에게 무슨 일이 일어나는지를 저로 하여금 지각하고, 또 기억할 수 있도록 하기 위해서입니다. I was reduced into a state of insensibility as to the bodily senses, thus almost into the state of dying persons, retaining however my interior life unimpaired, attended with the power of thinking, and with sufficient breathing for life, and finally with a tacit breathing, that I might perceive and remember what happens to those who have died and are being resuscitated.

170. 심장 부분에 머무르는 천적 천사들이 있었는데, 이 심장으로 저는 그들과 연결된 것 같았습니다. 마침내 사고(思考, thought) 밖에는 제게 남아 있는 게 거의 없었고, 결과적으로 이 상태를 지각하는 것만 남았습니다. 이 상태로 몇 시간이 흘렀습니다. Celestial angels were present who occupied the region of the heart, so that as to the heart I seemed united with them, and so that at length scarcely anything was left to me except thought, and the consequent perception, and this for some hours.

171. 저는 영들의 세계에 있는 영들과 더 이상 커뮤니케이션할 수 없게 되었습니다. 그들은 제가 몸의 생명으로부터 떠난 줄 알았습니다. I was thus removed from communication with spirits in the world of spirits, who supposed that I had departed from the life of the body.

172. 심장 부분에 머무르고 있던 천적 천사들 외에, 저의 머리에 천사 둘이 또 앉아 있었습니다. 모든 사람에게 이런 일이 일어나는 거구나 하는 지각이 제게 주어졌습니다. Besides the celestial angels, who occupied the region of the heart, there were also two angels sitting at my head, and it was given me to perceive that it is so with everyone.

173. 제 머리에 앉아 있던 천사들은 완전한 침묵 가운데 있었습니다. 얼굴을 가지고 그들의 사고만 커뮤니케이션하면서 말이지요. 그래서 저는 또 다른 얼굴이 제 위에 드리워지는 것을 지각할 수 있었습니다. 실제로는 둘이었지요. 거기에 천사가 둘이 있었으니까요. The angels who sat at my head were perfectly silent, merely communicating their thoughts by the face, so that I could perceive that another face was as it were induced upon me; indeed two, because there were two angels.

천사들은 자기들의 얼굴이 받아들여짐을 통해서 그 사람이 죽었음을 압니다. When the angels perceive that their faces are received, they know that the man is dead.

174. 천사들의 얼굴 인식이 완료되면, 그들은 입 부분에 대한 무슨 변화를 유발하였고, 그렇게 해서 그들의 생각과 커뮤니케이션이 이루어졌는데, 이렇게 입 부분을 가지고 말하는 것이 천적 천사들에게는 흔한 일입니다. 주님의 허락으로 그들이 생각으로 말하는 것을 저는 지각할 수 있었습니다. After their faces had been recognized, they induced certain changes about the region of the mouth, and thus communicated their thoughts, for it is customary with the celestial angels to speak by the province of the mouth, and it was permitted me to perceive their cogitative speech.

175. 방부처리를 한 시신에서 나는 것 같은 그런 향내가 지각되었습니다. 천적 천사들이 나타날 때면 시신에서 나는 향이 무슨 달콤하고 신비로운 향기처럼 지각되는데, 이는 악한 영들로 하여금 접근하지 못 하게 하기 위함입니다. An aromatic odor was perceived, like that of an embalmed corpse, for when the celestial angels are present, the cadaverous odor is perceived as if it were aromatic, which when perceived by evil spirits prevents their approach.

176. 그 사이 저는 심장 부근이 천적 천사들과 더욱 더 단단히 결합된 상태로 지속되고 있었음을 지각했는데요, 그것은 또한 심장 박동 상태를 보고 분명히 알 수 있었습니다. Meanwhile I perceived that the region of the heart was kept very closely united with the celestial angels, as was also evident from the pulsation.

177. 사람은 임종 시 누구나 경건하고 거룩한 생각을 품는데 이때 천적 천사들은 그 사람이 계속해서 그런 생각 안에 머물러 있도록 그를 케어한다는 생각이 제 안에 스며들었습니다. It was instilled to me that man is kept engaged by the angels in the pious and holy thoughts which he entertained at the point of death;

또한 임종 중에 있는 사람들은 대부분 이때 영생을 생각하지, 구원이나 행복을 생각하는 사람들은 거의 없다는 것, 그래서 천사들도 그들이 계속 영생을 생각하도록 돕고 있는 것이라는 생각도 스며들었습니다. and it was also instilled that those who are dying usually think about eternal life, and seldom of salvation and happiness, and therefore the angels keep them in the thought of eternal life.

178. 이 생각 안에서 그들은 천적 천사들에 의해 상당히 오랜 시간 머무르게 되는데, 이런 상태는 천적 천사들이 떠나기 전까지 계속됩니다. 그러고 나서는 이제 깨어나게 되는데, 이때부터는 영적 천사들의 차례가 됩니다. In this thought they are kept for a considerable time by the celestial angels before these angels depart, and those who are being resuscitated are then left to the spiritual angels, with whom they are next associated.

그러는 동안은 그들은 ‘내가 지금 살아 있는 데는 몸 안이야...’ 하는 흐릿한 생각 가운데 있습니다. Meanwhile they have a dim idea that they are living in the body.

179. 몸의 장기들이 차가워지기 시작하면 곧 모든 생기(生氣, vital substances)가 사람으로부터 분리됩니다. 이 생기들이 사람 몸 어디에 있든, 심지어 천 갈래 미궁 교차로 구석구석 숨어 있다 하더라도 말이지요. 이처럼 사람 몸에 아무런 생기도 남아 있지 못 하게 하는 것, 이것은 주님의 자비로 말미암은 것입니다. 생기가 몸에서 분리되는 것은 사실은 주님이 생기를 죽 끌어당기시는 것인데, 이런 종류의 살아 있고 매우 강력한 끌어당김을 저는 이미 이 체험 시작 단계에서 벌써 지각할 수 있었습니다. As soon as the internal parts of the body grow cold, the vital substances are separated from the man, wherever they may be, even if inclosed in a thousand labyrinthine interlacings, for such is the efficacy of the Lord’s mercy (which I had previously perceived as a living and mighty attraction) that nothing vital can remain behind.

180. 머리에 앉아 있던 천적 천사들은 이후 제가 깨어난 것 같은 저 상태가 된 이후에도 한동안 저와 함께 있었습니다. 그러나 말없이 무언으로만 대화했습니다. The celestial angels who sat at the head remained with me for some time after I was as it were resuscitated, but they conversed only tacitly.

그들의 생각으로 하는 말들을 들으면서 저는 지금 그들은 제 안의 모든 오류들과 거짓들로 하여금 환히 빛 가운데 드러나도록 하고 있다는 것을 지각했습니다. 그들은 그것들을 향해 빙그레 미소는 짓지만 아무런 의사결정은 내리지 않았는데 마치 그런 거엔 아무 관심도 없는 듯 보였습니다. It was perceived from their cogitative speech that they made light of all fallacies and falsities, smiling at them not indeed as matters for derision, but as if they cared nothing about them.

그들의 스피치는 무언의 스피치입니다. 소리를 피하는 것이지요. 그리고 이런 종류의 언어를 가지고 그들은 자기들이 처음 만나는 영들과 대화를 시작하는 것입니다. Their speech is cogitative, devoid of sound, and in this kind of language they begin to speak with the souls with whom they are at first present.

181. 이렇게 해서 천적 천사들로 말미암아 깨어나게 된 사람은 그러나 아직 무슨 모호한 생명만 가지고 있습니다. As yet the man, thus resuscitated by the celestial angels, possesses only an obscure life;

이제 시간이 되어 영적 천사들의 차례, 곧 영적 천사들이 이 사람을 돌볼 차례가 되어 잠시 후, 이들이 도착하게 되면 드디어 천적 천사들은 이 사람을 떠납니다. 임무 교대가 일어난 것이지요. but when the time comes for him to be delivered to the spiritual angels, then after a little delay, when the spiritual angels have approached, the celestial depart;

이제부터는 이들 영적 천사들이 이 사람을 위해 뭔가를 하는 모습이 보였는데 그것은 앞서 천적 천사들이 빛과 관련하여 먼저 준비해 놓은 것인데, 이 사람이 이제 그 빛으로 말미암아 도움을 받도록 하는 것이었습니다. 이후 이어지는 이야기는 다음 장 시작에 앞서 마저 다루겠습니다. and it has been shown me how the spiritual angels operate in order that the man may receive the benefit of light, as described in the continuation of this subject prefixed to the following chapter.
