7절, 여호와 하나님이 땅의 흙으로 사람을 지으시고 생기를 그 코에 불어넣으시니 사람이 생령이 되니라 And Jehovah God formed man, dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of lives, and man became a living soul.

생명을 ‘호흡’(breathing)과 ‘숨’(breath)으로 묘사하는 이유는 태고교회 사람들이 호흡(respiration)의 상태를 가지고 사랑과 신앙의 상태를 지각했기 때문인데, 이것은 그들의 후손들 가운데로 계속해서 이어지며 변화했습니다. The reason why life is described by “breathing” and by “breath” is also that the men of the most ancient church perceived states of love and of faith by states of respiration, which were successively changed in their posterity.

 

※ 여기 우리말로는 다 같이 ‘호흡’으로 번역할 수 있는 영어 표현들, ‘breathing’, ‘breath’ 및 ‘respiration’이 나오는데요, 그 차이를 찾아보면서 제가 이해한 바로는 다음과 같습니다. 먼저 앞의 둘은 호흡, 숨에 관한 동사적, 명사적 표현으로 이해하면 되겠고요, 다만 들숨과 날숨, 폐 및 산소, 이산화탄소 등을 염두에 두면 되겠습니다. 맨 끝의 ‘respiration’은 온 몸 전체 세포의 호흡, 세포 단위의 숨이라는 뉘앙스가 느껴지네요. 그러니까 ‘온몸으로 호흡하다, 느끼다’ 같은 그런 겁니다.

 

이런 종류의 호흡에 대해서는 아직 말씀드릴 수 있는 게 아무것도 없는데요, 오늘날에는 이런 류의 호흡에 대해서 거의 알려진 게 없기 때문입니다. 반면, 태곳적 사람들은 이에 대해 매우 친숙했고, 저세상 사람들, 곧 더 이상 이 세상 사람이 아닌 분들 역시도 그런데요, 이것이 바로 왜 그들이 영이나 생명을 ‘바람’(wind)에 비유했나 하는 이유입니다. 요한복음에 보면, 주님이 인간의 거듭남에 관한 말씀을 하시면서 바로 이런 식으로 비유하시는 걸 볼 수 있습니다. The most ancient people were well acquainted with it, and so are those who are in the other life, but no longer anyone on this earth, and this was the reason why they likened spirit or life to “wind.” The Lord also does this when speaking of the regeneration of man, in John:1

시편도 그런데요. So in David:

 

여호와의 말씀으로 하늘이 지음이 되었으며 그 만상을 그의 입 기운으로 이루었도다 (시33:6) By the word of Jehovah were the heavens made, and all the army of them by the breath of his mouth. (Ps. 33:6)

 

29주께서 낯을 숨기신즉 그들이 떨고 주께서 그들의 호흡을 거두신즉 그들은 죽어 먼지로 돌아가나이다 30주의 영을 보내어 그들을 창조하사 지면을 새롭게 하시나이다 (시104:29-30) Thou gatherest their breath, they expire, and return to their dust; thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created, and thou renewest the faces of the ground. (Ps. 104:29–30)

 

‘숨결, 기운’(the breath, [spiraculum])이라는 표현을 사용해서 신앙과 사랑의 생명을 가리키고 있음이 욥기를 보면 나옵니다. That the “breath” [spiraculum] is used for the life of faith and of love, appears from Job:

 

그러나 사람의 속에는 영이 있고 전능자의 숨결이 사람에게 깨달음을 주시나니 (욥32:8) He is the spirit in man, and the breath of Shaddai giveth them understanding. (Job 32:8)

 

하나님의 영이 나를 지으셨고 전능자의 기운이 나를 살리시느니라 (욥33:4) The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of Shaddai hath given me life. (Job 33:4)
