16. 1절, 태초에 하나님이 천지를 창조하시니라 Verse 1. In the beginning God created the heavens [coelum] and the earth.

 

태고(太古, the most ancient time)를 ‘태초’(太初, the beginning)라 합니다. 천지가 처음 시작된 때이지요. The most ancient time is called “the beginning.”

 

이때를 선지자들은 말씀 여러 곳에서 ‘옛날’(days of old), ‘영원’(days of eternity) 등으로 불렀습니다. By the prophets it is in various places called the “days of old” [antiquitatis] and also the “days of eternity.”

 

‘태초’라는 표현, ‘처음, 시작’이라는 표현에는 또 사람의 거듭남 전체 과정 중 그 첫 번째 기간이라는 의미도 있습니다. 사람은 그때 새롭게 태어나며, 생명을 얻기 때문입니다. The “beginning” also involves the first period when man is being regenerated, for he is then born anew, and receives life.

 

그래서 거듭남 그 자체를 가리켜 사람의 ‘새 창조’라고 합니다. Regeneration itself is therefore called a “new creation” of man.

 

‘창조하다’(create), ‘짓다’(form), ‘만들다’(make) 등 이런 표현들은 거의 모든 선지서, 거의 모든 데서 약간의 상징적 차이들은 있지만, 공통적으로 거듭남을 가리킵니다. The expressions to “create,” to “form,” to “make,” in almost all parts of the prophetic writings signify to regenerate, yet with a difference in the signification.

 

이사야처럼 말입니다. As in Isaiah:

 

내 이름으로 불려지는 모든 자 곧 내가 내 영광을 위하여 창조한 자를 오게 하라 그를 내가 지었고 그를 내가 만들었느니라 (사43:7) Everyone that is called by my name, I have created him for my glory, I have formed him, yea, I have made him. (Isa. 43:7)

 

그래서 주님은 같은 성경에서, ‘구속자’(redeemer), ‘태에서부터 지으신 이’(former from the womb), ‘지으신 이’(maker), ‘창조자’(creator)라 일컬음을 받으십니다. And therefore the Lord is called the “redeemer,” the “former from the womb,” the “maker,” and also the “creator”; as in the same prophet:

 

나는 여호와 너희의 거룩한 이요 이스라엘의 창조자요 너희의 왕이니라 (사43:15) I am Jehovah your holy one, the creator of Israel, your king. (Isa.43:15)

 

시편에서는 In David:

 

창조함을 받을 백성이 여호와를 찬양하리로다 (시102:18) The people that is created shall praise Jah. (Ps. 102:18)

 

주의 영을 보내어 그들을 창조하사 지면을 새롭게 하시나이다 (시104:30) Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created, and thou renewest the faces of the ground. (Ps. 104:30)

 

‘하늘’(heaven)은 속 사람을, ‘땅’(earth)은 거듭남 이전 겉 사람을 가리킨다는 것은 앞으로 이어지는 내용을 통해 보시게 됩니다. That “heaven” signifies the internal man and “earth” the external man before regeneration may be seen from what follows.
